Tom uses his smartphone and tablet extensively throughout his day as a learner. In the morning, he checks notifications on Facebook and his class schedule on Moodle before catching the bus. During class, he tweets resources, takes notes on assessments in Evernote, and watches videos. Later, he works on assignments using various apps to read PDFs, edit photos, record audio, and plan a trip. In the evening, he watches tutorials, sketches ideas, and listens to music before bed to prepare for the next day of learning activities supported by his mobile devices.

Encourage webinar participation through gamificationNatalie Denmeade
These are slides from a Professional Development webinar on 'Hints and Tips for Mobile Learning'. Participation was encouraged by allocating points per individual which then were added up as a group (NSW vs QLD). Points were offered for creative thinking, skills, experience and participation.
This presentation will be of interest to Moodle Course Creators and educators interested in gamification. The Moodle Gradebook is a very powerful, and often neglected, gamification element.
Interactive computer games stimulate the hippocampus part of our brain, which is essential for learning new information, and invoke positive emotions. The same cannot be said for exams! People generally find the learning and assessment process daunting. A well configured gradebook can provide essential feedback to keep students motivated and positive.
Becoming an e-Learner shouldn't require having a combination of Einstein intelligence and Steve Irwin bravery. If you have been an online Student you probably were thinking ... What do I have to do? Did I pass that assignment? Have I finished yet? It's been months since I have been here .. I can't remember where I was up to.
Full presentation with voice-over: http://bit.ly/18hwzPP . This presentation demonstrates the flexibility of the Moodle LMS gradebook to be configured for all scenarios .. even the Vocational Education (VET) sector! Sample courses will be shown for competency based assessment (graded and ungraded). Rubrics, outcomes, custom scales and progress bars are all Gamification elements that can provide learners with rewards, feedback, levels, progression loops, boss fights, leader boards and achievement badges.
Why games light up your hippocampus and exams do not. Quotes from researchers and speakers about gamification. Slides from the annual Moodle online conference May 2013. Full recording here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=02nHOIZY7V0

This 90 minute presentation offers a series of provocative case studies, local and global, to demonstrate effective application of gamification principles and practices in Education. We will discuss key concepts of fun, play, and education.
Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

7:05 Before he gets out of bed, Tom checks his Facebook notifications
- using Dolphin HD Browser app (28% of Facebook users check their
notifications before getting out of bed) . Someone said class wasn't
on today because TAFE holidays are different to school. The TAFE
class has a FACEBOOK GROUP where he can quickly check. Yes it is -
Oh joy of joys. He shares enthusiastic posts on Facebook about his
plans for today
8:30 Tom catches the bus to TAFE and uses the time to look at Moodle
(Class Learning Management System) using the browser on his tablet.
He checks what assignments are due and catches up on some
reading required before class today (yes.. this is a fictional story, he
was really on Facebook.)
3. 8:55 His mates are not at TAFE so Tom uses SKYPE to call them and
see what they are up to
9:15 Teacher asks everybody to TWEET a website they find on the
topic: Conflict in the Workplace. They have 10 minutes to find a site
and then post with the tag #OCT21Conflict. The tweeting
conversation is displayed on the data projector so everyone can
see the growing list of resources. Tom uses WIKIPEDIA Mobile
Encyclopedia to find some definitions of terms he hasn't heard
before
11:00 Individual work on assessments due next week: Tom stores all
of his files on DROPBOX, which he accesses using ASTRO FILE
MANAGER. No excuses that the dog ate my homework today...
4. 11:30 Tom plays Angry Birds during class break to chill out
1:30 Tom and a class member use the tablet to record a short
video demonstrating good listening skills, he uploads it to Moodle
My Private Folder

anyway. Readings for tomorrows class are in PDF which Tom
saved to his tablet and reads with LUMI READ. He reads the Word
docs provided with DOCS TO GO app
8:30 Tom watches some online tutorials, he wants to learn how to
use WeVIDEO to make a Digital Story
