Bridges beat walls | Dome Magazine January 13, 2011Joseph Serwach
We were sitting in a House Committee hearing room. Michigan leaders were explaining state government to several Chinese university presidents when I decided to tap on my iPad and do a quick email/Facebook check. As my browser reached Facebook.com, a wall leapt onto my screen saying the site was "blocked by the House of Representatives'' web portal. I marveled at this message like a tourist seeing the Great Wall of Chine for the first time. More than 500 million people use Facebook the way older generations use telephones and someone decided to build a wall blocking this 21st century giant? Quoting Scotty from Star Trek, I thought ``How quaint'' and quickly tapped on my iPad's Facebook App, which went right around the wall and took me to the outside world. The goal is for students to address what could improve conditions and how globalization influences material conditions in the Mississippi Delta.
This document summarizes and analyzes an academic article about Aboriginal hip hop culture in Australia. It discusses three key points:
1) It examines the work of three Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Australian hip hop artists (Little G, MC Wire, and Morganics) who are part of the "conscious" hip hop scene and its influence on Aboriginal youth identity formation.
2) It argues that hip hop's localization in Australia is due not just to oppositional politics but also its internal logic of sampling, representing, and flow, which allows it to be adapted while maintaining local roots.
3) It provides an overview of the artist's performances and workshops to illustrate how they represent their communities and hip hop culture

The document also provides examples of local South Carolina primary sources and extensions like having students role-play as Civil War era children.
Practical Techniques for Teaching Culture in the ClassroomJoe McVeigh
As English language teachers we naturally focus on language itself and how we can help our students learn it better. But research has shown that intercultural competence can be just as important as language ability. How can we become more aware of cultural differences and how can we-and our students-bridge cultural gaps? In this interactive webinar, we will examine some key concepts of intercultural communication and look at some practical ways to help learners communicate more effectively when they interact with those from different cultural backgrounds.
The document discusses how Theodore Roosevelt promoted certain works of literature that embodied his vision of "true Americanism" during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a time of massive social and cultural change in the US. While Roosevelt championed works by writers like Israel Zangwill, Jacob Riis, Elizabeth Stern, and Finley Peter Dunn, the relationships with these writers were complex as they sometimes undermined or resisted Roosevelt's nationalist and racialist ideas. The document examines Roosevelt's relationship with these writers in depth through the lens of Aviva F. Taubenfeld's book "Rough Writing: Ethnic Authorship in Roosevelt’s America."

Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold arrived at Columbine High School on April 20, 1999 with duffel bags containing propane bombs. They planned to detonate the bombs during lunch in the cafeteria and then shoot students as they fled. However, the bombs failed to detonate. Over the next 45 minutes, Harris and Klebold methodically shot students and teachers throughout the school, killing 12 students and 1 teacher and injuring 23 others. They then committed suicide in the school library, ending their deadly rampage. A later Secret Service report found that prior to most school shootings, others were aware of the attacker's plans, the attackers had difficulties coping with losses or failures, and many felt bullied or persecuted

How is reception theory relevant to the work of chris hondrosSamualWilliams
Chris Hondros was an American war photographer who covered conflicts in Liberia, Afghanistan, Iraq, and Libya. His photos aimed to show different perspectives of war. Reception theory, which asserts that audiences can interpret media in different ways, applies to Hondros' work. For example, his photo of a Liberian teenager celebrating firing a rocket-propelled grenade could be seen as celebrating violence, documenting reality, or something in between. Hondros wanted viewers to draw their own conclusions. He was killed in 2011 while photographing clashes in Libya.
Both texts portray different forms of racism present in society. Text one shows overt racism through a movie about segregated proms for black and white students. It highlights the power imbalance between the dominant white group and the minority black students. Text two depicts more subtle new racism in New Zealand through the otherization of Asian migrants in media coverage. It analyzes how Asian voices are neglected or misrepresented. The media plays a role in both texts in either addressing or perpetuating racism through unequal representation and misuse of minority voices.

The poem "The Charge of the Light Brigade" by Alfred, Lord Tennyson describes the Battle of Balaclava during the Crimean War in 1854. It tells of the Light Brigade, a unit of British cavalry, who misinterpreted orders and made a fatal charge into heavy Russian artillery fire, being attacked from three sides. Though most were killed or wounded, Tennyson ends the poem honoring the brigade for their bravery and sacrifice, saying "Honor the charge they made, honor the Light Brigade, noble six hundred."

Tense Present: Democracy, English, and the Wars over Usage
By David Foster Wallace
Harper’s Magazine
April 2001
Did you know that probing the seamy underbelly of U.S. lexicography reveals ideological strife and controversy and intrigue and nastiness and fervor on a nearly hanging-chad scale? For instance, did you know that some modern dictionaries are notoriously liberal and others notoriously conservative, and that certain conservative dictionaries were actually conceived and designed as corrective responses to the "corruption" and "permissiveness" of certain liberal dictionaries? That the oligarchic device of having a special "Distinguished Usage Panel... of outstanding professional speakers and writers" is an attempted compromise between the forces of egalitarianism and traditionalism in English, but that most linguistic liberals dismiss the Usage Panel as mere sham-populism?
Did you know that U.S. lexicography even had a seamy underbelly?
The occasion for this article is Oxford University Press's semi-recent release of Bryan A. Garner's A Dictionary of Modern American Usage. The fact of the matter is that Garner's dictionary is extremely good, certainly the most comprehensive usage guide since E. W. Gilman's Webster's Dictionary of English Usage, now a decade out of date.
Its format, like that of Gilman and the handful of other great American usage guides of the last century, includes entries on individual words and phrases and expostulative small-cap MINI-ESSAYS on any issue broad enough to warrant more general discussion. But the really distinctive and ingenious features of A Dictionary of Modern American Usage involve issues of rhetoric and ideology and style, and it is impossible to describe why these issues are important and why Garner's management of them borders on genius without talking about the historical context
in which ADMAU appears, and this context turns out to be a veritable hurricane of controversies involving everything from technical linguistics to public education to political ideology, and these controversies take a certain amount of time to unpack before their relation to what makes Garner's usage guide so eminently worth your hard-earned reference-book dollar can even be established; and in fact there's no way even to begin the whole harrowing polymeric discussion without taking a moment to establish and define the highly colloquial term SNOOT.
From one perspective; a certain irony attends the publication of any good new book on American usage. It is that the people who are going to be interested in such a book are also the people who are least going to need it, i.e., that offering counsel on the finer points of U.S. English is Preaching to the Choir. The relevant Choir here comprises that small percentage of American citizens who actually care about the current status of double modals and ergative verbs. The same sorts of people who watched Story of English on PBS (twice) and read W. Satire's column with t.

Little Rock Nine: Evaluating Historical Sources by Christy ThomasPeter Pappas
The document is a DBQ created by Christy Thomas for students to evaluate historical sources related to the Little Rock Nine and school desegregation at Little Rock Central High School in 1957. It includes primary sources like images, texts, and video to give context and perspectives on the events. Students are asked essential questions to analyze the roots of the conflict, motivations of those involved, and which documents provided the most understanding. The DBQ allows students to engage in historical thinking by analyzing a variety of sources on a pivotal event in the Civil Rights Movement.
Chemical War: Shaping World Opinion by Erik NelsonPeter Pappas
The document discusses the first large-scale use of chemical weapons during World War I in 1915. It shaped the world's view of these weapons. The experience of WWI influenced international opinion on chemical weapons, as evidenced by treaties before and after the war. The 1899 Hague Treaty prohibited their use, while the 1925 Geneva Protocol more strongly condemned them after witnessing their effects firsthand in the war.

On February 19, 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, the instrument that authorized the forced removal and incarceration of 120,000 Japanese Americans. Denied their civil liberties, they were held in camps operated by the War Relocation Authority. Between 1942 and 1944, some 33,000 individual contracts were issued for seasonal farm labor, with many working in the sugar beet industry. This exhibit introduces their story. LAND USE LAND COVER AND NDVI OF MIRZAPUR DISTRICT, UPRAHUL
This Dissertation explores the particular circumstances of Mirzapur, a region located in the
core of India. Mirzapur, with its varied terrains and abundant biodiversity, offers an optimal
environment for investigating the changes in vegetation cover dynamics. Our study utilizes
advanced technologies such as GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and Remote sensing to
analyze the transformations that have taken place over the course of a decade.
The complex relationship between human activities and the environment has been the focus
of extensive research and worry. As the global community grapples with swift urbanization,
population expansion, and economic progress, the effects on natural ecosystems are becoming
more evident. A crucial element of this impact is the alteration of vegetation cover, which plays a
significant role in maintaining the ecological equilibrium of our planet.Land serves as the foundation for all human activities and provides the necessary materials for
these activities. As the most crucial natural resource, its utilization by humans results in different
'Land uses,' which are determined by both human activities and the physical characteristics of the
land.
The utilization of land is impacted by human needs and environmental factors. In countries
like India, rapid population growth and the emphasis on extensive resource exploitation can lead
to significant land degradation, adversely affecting the region's land cover.
Therefore, human intervention has significantly influenced land use patterns over many
centuries, evolving its structure over time and space. In the present era, these changes have
accelerated due to factors such as agriculture and urbanization. Information regarding land use and
cover is essential for various planning and management tasks related to the Earth's surface,
providing crucial environmental data for scientific, resource management, policy purposes, and
diverse human activities.
Accurate understanding of land use and cover is imperative for the development planning
of any area. Consequently, a wide range of professionals, including earth system scientists, land
and water managers, and urban planners, are interested in obtaining data on land use and cover
changes, conversion trends, and other related patterns. The spatial dimensions of land use and
cover support policymakers and scientists in making well-informed decisions, as alterations in
these patterns indicate shifts in economic and social conditions. Monitoring such changes with the
help of Advanced technologies like Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems is
crucial for coordinated efforts across different administrative levels. Advanced technologies like
Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems

Changes in vegetation cover refer to variations in the distribution, composition, and overall
structure of plant communities across different temporal and spatial scales. These changes can
occur natural.

Imagine that you were in Hawaii at the time of
the attack. Hawaii is not yet a state but America is
dazzled by its island beauty; you might even think
of it as part of America, your home.
Now picture that you are seeing these images in
person, maybe you even saw and heard the planes
flying overhead as the attack commenced.
What about the images sticks out to you that
might leave a lasting impression? What are you
feeling as you see the smoke billowing over the
battleships? As the bomb explodes when it hits the
ship? You know there is a war going on in Europe
and in Asia, but now it’s come to you. What might

you? What ideas or values lead you to these

It’s the day after the attacks and you are listening to the radio
waiting for the President to address the nation. The attack is all

Germans, but maybe the President would make it clear in his ad-
dress.
How might you feel before you hear the speech?
Next, listen to the speech.

Think about how you said you were feeling when you looked

listening to the song? What lyrics stuck with you? What sorts

Do they focus more on America’s assured victory or on
bashing the Japanese who attacked? How do they do this?

How do American citizens react to attacks from outsid-
ers? What are the implications of these kinds of reac-
tions?
In the 1940’s, the reactions we’ve looked at so far were
viewed as normal. As stated in the last slide (and shown
in the cartoon to the right) people were scared of the
Japanese in ways they weren’t scared of the Germans
or the Russians. To feel safe they took drastic action be-
yond the musical opinions stated here.
Using our modern perspective, how do you view these
actions now? What has changed between then and
now? What has stayed the same?
Next we will talk about modern examples.

Comparisons have been made between
Pearl Harbor and many modern events
caused by the terrorism of extremist
groups. You have grown up in this
world, what similarities do you see be-
tween Pearl Harbor and events such as
9/11? Or the more recent November
2015 attacks in Paris?
People and politicians may use the fear
and sadness after an event to bolster po-
litical support for more radical action. Is
it possible that internment camps, con-
centration camps, or registration for
groups of people could happen in
2015/2016?
Even if political action isn’t taken
against the offending group, society may
take it upon themselves to act. Should
we blame a whole group of people for
the actions of a few? What unspoken ac-
tions have been taken against Muslim
people in the wake of 9/11 and the re-
cent November 2015 Paris attacks?

I have rather enjoyed creating this lesson. The idea was some-
thing I became interested in while in college and have not had
the space to develop since then. When this project was intro-
duced to me I knew immediately what I would do.
It became more interesting, unfortunately, in the middle of No-
vember as Paris was attacked and hateful rhetoric began to
come from the republican presidential candidates. It reminded
me of some of the rhetoric after the attacks on the twin towers,
which as a 12 year old then I clearly remember. As I started my
venture into teaching, I realized that many of my students
would be born near or after this day that so scarred my mem-
ory. I was reminded of my own age as well as my place in the
greater timeline of history. It is this realization that directed me
to think of another generations “day of infamy” and the ways
we teach it to students who have little context for it.
I also find myself wanting to emphasize on historical empathy,
or perspective taking. Often times when looking at history, we
may look at it with our modern day perspectives and judge the
people of the past without seeing things through their eyes.
The purpose of this is not to justify their actions but realize
that it could still happen to us; that if we forget the past or be-
lieve we are above it, we are bound to repeat it.
Creating this document based lesson allowed me to combine
both of these ideas of mine into one, ideally powerful, lesson. I
am not a Mac person so learning to use the book design soft-
ware was a bit of a learning curve but in the end I found it
worth it to create this easy to access lesson. I hope that who-
ever may find this will have some deep discussions both about
our history and the nature of humans themselves.
