This document discusses using quantitative analysis methods from cliometrics, or new economic history, to analyze apprenticeship contracts from the Garzoni database in order to gain insights into the Venetian economy between 1580-1660. Specifically, it looks at trends in the variety of professions over time, the representation of different economic sectors like printing, and descriptive statistics. The analysis provides a mixed view of crisis versus reorganization in Venice during this period, finding some confirmation of crisis in printing but not all sectors, and a reduction in profession variety but an increase in Venetian apprentices. Two open questions are also posed about what apprentices were doing and the role of knowledge transfer versus exploitation in the apprenticeship system
