2. Background
• Workplace wellness programs are
beginning to earn their place among
necessities within the environment
• Model programs decreasing days lost
from work, enhancing lifestyle, and
increasing performance

3. Objectives
• Examine health behaviors
• Identify parameters for workplace wellness
• Examine sleep patterns of staff
• Discuss determinants of health including
workplace disparities, bricks and mortar, and
staffing.

4. Core Concepts
• The cost and burdens of preventable
diseases are immense and escalating
• Healthy environments effect behaviors,
staffing, and outcomes

5. Atmosphere – work and home
• Odors can influence mood,
attitude and our sense of
well-being
• Smell can act on our
subconscious
• We can find aromas
pleasant or unpleasant
and not know why

6. Hydration and Health
• 75% of Americans are chronically
dehydrated
• Lack of water is the first trigger of
daytime fatigue
• 8-10 glasses of water a day impacts
joint and back pain
• A 2% decrease in body water triggers
short-term memory loss and makes it
difficult for one to focus on a computer
screen or printed page

7. Sleep Deprivation
• Sleep deprivation and
undiagnosed sleep
disorders are
collectively one of our
most serious problems

8. Nature’s Signals
• Our society is prone to
ignore or resist nature's
signal that we need more
sleep, and we often resist
far too long

9. Focus on Balance
• Focus on health
• Focus on results

10. Results
• Worksite wellness programs
including web-based materials,
activity logs, and pedometer
programs contribute to overall
health of mind, body, and spirit
• Workteams created internal respite
sites that facilitate an overall sense
of well-being
