This document discusses startup communities and entrepreneurial ecosystems. It notes that while practitioners think in terms of communities and systems, academics still have definitional issues. Good signs include practitioners focusing on communities rather than hierarchies, and phenomena being bottom-up and networked rather than top-down. Global organizations supporting entrepreneurship are mentioned. Research shows personal preparedness from knowing entrepreneurs and supportive social norms are top predictors of entrepreneurial activity. Ecosystems are described as messy, dynamic, interconnected networks with gaps and flows of resources. Inclusive, bottom-up communities with common causes and events are advocated for. Metrics and addressing bottlenecks are discussed for monitoring progress of ecosystems.
