I gave this talk at the UW Systems, Architecture, & Networking (SANE) retreat in May 2014. I argued that as a community, big data system-builders may be great at building fast systems.. but that these systems DO NOT serve the scientists we work with at the UW eScience Institute. I then provide a few ideas going forward for how to build services for scientists that will enable them to do their own work, thus "serving themselves".
This document discusses the use of educational media and online resources in teaching. It provides links to websites on topics like using simulations, games and virtual experiments in subjects like science, presenting different learning theories, and developing educational games and interactive activities for students. The document encourages using a variety of online and readymade resources to help explain complex topics for different learning styles in a fun and engaging manner.

This document discusses rhyming words and provides an example rhyming story about a cat and a fat rat. It explains that rhyming words sound the same at the end, and provides examples like "cat", "hat", "mat", and "rat". The story then tells of a cat sitting on his mat who gets tired of chasing the fat rat, until the rat runs by and the cat hits it with a little bat. This sends the fat rat back to its mat wearing a funny hat. The document emphasizes that all the rhyming words in the story end in "t", so they have the same sound at the end.

The document discusses designing teams and processes to adapt to changing needs. It recommends structuring teams so members can work within their competencies and across projects fluidly with clear roles and expectations.
