World War II began in 1939 when Germany attacked Poland, occupying the country along with Russia. During this time, 6 million Polish people were killed and many cities were destroyed as Poland suffered under occupation. While the war ended in 1945, Poland's independence was still not restored as its borders and government were decided by Russia, Britain, and the US, leaving Poland under Soviet control and communist rule.
