2. Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert) Musculoskeletal Ultrasonography
The Postgraduate certificate (PGCert)in musculoskeletal ultrasound has been developed at
the Homerton University’s Sport and Musculoskeletal Medicine Department in collaboration
with The University of East London’s (UEL) Professional Health Sciences subject areas within
the School of Health, Sports and Bioscience. The objective is to support and formally
recognise the professional development of those clinicians working in the field of
Musculoskeletal and Sports Medicine and to achieve competence in diagnostic and
interventional ultrasonography. The PGCert programme allows healthcare professionals to
combine learning in the workplace with a recognised postgraduate qualification.
In addition to being validated at The University of East London the PGCert has also been
accredited by The Royal College of General Practitioners and The Royal College of
Radiologists who have awarded the full programme 60 CPD credits (30 CPD credits per
module).
The PGCert is aimed at healthcare professionals from diverse backgrounds including,
Orthopaedics, Osteopathy, Physiotherapy, Podiatry, Radiology, Rheumatology, Sonography
and Sports Medicine.
Successful completion of the programme Postgraduate Certificate Musculoskeletal
Ultrasonography leads to the award of Postgraduate Certificate by the University of East
London.
Programme Aims
The programme aims to provide healthcare professionals involved in the management of
musculoskeletal medicine an education and training which allows them to be safe and
competent practitioners in the use of diagnostic ultrasound within their own practice. With
a particular emphasis on accurate and detailed anatomy the programme will educate
practitioners in the safe and correct attainment of ultrasound images in the examination of
3. Sporting and musculoskeletal pathologies and in utilising these images to complement their
patient management choices. In addition the programme aims to enable practitioners to be
proactive in initiating and leading role developments in their own specific areas of speciality
and to integrate academic learning with the development of higher levels of professional
practice.
Programme Structure
The Postgraduate certificate (PGCert) in musculoskeletal ultrasound comprises of two core
30 credit modules with no option modules. The first module is a prerequisite to the second
module. This first module incorporates the background scientific principles and
instrumentation of ultrasound with the practical application within the context of the
normal anatomy of the upper extremity and lower extremity limb of healthy adults.
Interpretation of common pathologies within a musculoskeletal context will be addressed.
The second module is practice based and cannot be initiated until successful completion of
the first module. In addition prior to enrolment on the second module the student must be
able to demonstrate that they have a suitable clinical placement. This second module is
designed to apply the skills and knowledge of the first module within an appropriately
supervised clinical setting.
A summary of the programme structure may be seen overleaf.
