Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software Fuzzing
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

- 3. What makes a computer run fast? • RAM • Internet Connection • Hard drive • SSD vs HDD
- 4. Tip 1: Maximize your memory • In the market for a new computer, RAM is key • Keep track of processes running in the background
- 5. Tip 2: Improve Internet Connection • Choose the right ISP- www.speedtest.net • Make sure router is powerful enough • Don’t choke up bandwidth • As last resort, move closer to router or use Ethernet
- 6. Tip 3: Do frequent Scans • Viruses, adware, and tracking cookies will appear during normal use • Adblock Plus, Malware Bytes, Microsoft Security Essentials, AVG Antivirus
- 7. Tip 4: Disk Defragmentation • Disk defragmentation speeds up read/write operations to hard drive • Possible to schedule defragmentation or perform manually
- 8. Tip 5: Manage Startup Programs • Too many programs on startup hurt boot times • Only disable if you know what it does • When in doubt-Google
- 9. Tip 6: Google Chrome is the bane of old computers • Each tab in chrome uses separate memory process • Good for crashes, but uses vast amounts of RAM • Use firefox or tab suspender with old PC
- 10. Tip 7: Avoid leaving your laptop plugged in • On many laptops, leaving plugged in constantly charges battery • Can cause long term drain • Either unplug when full or remove battery
- 11. Looking forward… • Use adblockers • Turn off computer when not in use • Don’t install unneeded programs and delete ones no longer used • Next time you buy, check specs!
