writing devices such as
transitional devices,
connectors, determiners
and repetitions that are
used to maintain text
coherence.
In developing your ideas,
you can use different
patterns but remember in
the real world many texts
contain section and
passages that combine
two or more pattern of
organization.
What is idea
development
?
Idea development is the
manner, pattern or
method by which a writer
or speaker explain his
main idea about a topic
in a paragraph or essay.
- The organization of
supporting details
helps you understand
how an author thinks
and helps you
remember what you
read.
Idea development is
essential in writing. This
is done by organizing
ideas in a logical and
clear manner that suits
the writer’s purpose.
Commonly Used
Patterns of Idea
Development
1. General to
Particular - discusses
the general topic by
presenting
specific details that
support the topic.
You can safely swim with
piranhas, but it’s important to know
how and when to do it. First, choose
an appropriate time, preferably at night
and during the rainy season. Avoid
piranha-infested waters during the dry
season, when food supplies are low
and piranhas are more desperate.

Piranhas feed during the day, so night-time
swimming is much safer. Second, streamline
your movement. Wild or erratic activity
attracts the attention of piranhas. Swim
slowly and smoothly. Finally, never enter the
water with an open wound or raw meat.
Piranhas attack larger animals only when
they are wounded. The presence of blood in
the water may tempt the fish to attack. If you
follow these simple precautions, you will
have little to fear.

2. Claim and
Counterclaim-This
pattern of idea
development refers to
the structure of
presenting a side of an
A claim is the
writer’s stand on a
topic supported by
evidences and
logical reasoning.
Also, the writer presents
the counterclaim or the
opposite stand of an
issue to disprove it
through evidences and
logical reasoning.
People believe that rock music
can make teenagers rebellious
because of its lyrics but, I don’t
think it is enough to make them
go against society. They say rock
music concentrates mostly on
antisocial subjects which influence
teenagers’ view toward society.
However, a study shows that an
average teenager would not take the
music seriously, for he or she
concentrates more on the musical
value of the song rather than the inner
meaning of the lyrics. Thus, even
though the lyrics in rock music show
social rebellion, it does not make
teenagers rebel against society.
Examples of transitional devices:
however, nevertheless, on one
hand, on the other hand,
admittedly, some people say, some
may say, of course, nevertheless,
and but not only that.
3. Problem-Solution
– is used when a writer
identifies a problem
and addresses it by
presenting one or more
solutions.
A problem refers to the
unsatisfactory situation that
causes troubles or difficulties.
A solution on the other hand,
refers to the ways in solving or
minimizing the problem.
In most parts of the world there are
not as many crocodiles as there used to
be. This is a problem because crocodiles
are becoming endangered and also
crocodiles are necessary to the balance
of nature. Many crocodiles have died
because people have dried up the
swamps and marshes where the
crocodiles live.
Poachers have also contributed to the
dilemma as crocodiles have been
desired for their strong, smooth,
leathery skins. In order to preserve
these mighty creatures, people must
take care of the crocodiles’
environment and help put us a stop
to the needless shooting of these
Examples of
grammatical signals:
because, cause, since, as a
result, in order to, and so
that, as a solution, and one

4. Persuasion - intends to convince
the readers to do or believe in
something. It allows the writer to express
his or her personalviewpoints about a
topic to convince the readers. This
pattern of idea development is based on
opinions and emotions.

consequences. The causes and

the order of importance and
