Metadata 2020 is a collaboration that aims to advance open metadata for research. It involves over 100 individuals from publisher, library, repository, and funder communities. The groups are defining challenges around inconsistent metadata schemas and formats, out-of-date metadata, and high costs of metadata management. Opportunities for collaboration include developing shared vocabularies and guidelines, educating researchers on the importance of metadata, and creating tools to improve metadata quality and interoperability. The goal is for communities to work together on metadata issues to advance scholarly communication.
