This research examined the effects of high-dose buprenorphine and methadone use during pregnancy by comparing outcomes for 251 addicted women and their newborn babies across different hospitals. 159 women had used buprenorphine during pregnancy, delivering 160 live babies, and most also smoked, used heroin, and injected buprenorphine daily. Half the newborns required treatment for neonatal abstinence syndrome due to the mother's drug addictions transferring dependency to the babies. The findings provide useful information on the realities and risks of substance abuse during pregnancy.
