GMES (Global Monitoring for Environment and Security) is a joint initiative of the European Commission and ESA to establish a European capacity to acquire and distribute useful information to support European policies and commitments. GMES will provide services using data from space-borne and in-situ observation systems. It is being gradually implemented using existing systems, with new capacities developed where needed. The EC and ESA have identified initial "Fast Track" GMES core services in land, marine, atmosphere, emergency and security monitoring. GMES aims to provide up-to-date, cross-border, reliable and affordable geo-information services to users.

As part of the final BETTER Hackathon, project partners prepared 4 hackathon exercises. SatCen organised this exercise as the challenge promoter for the Geospatial Intelligence thematic area. This step-by-step exercise featured the use of Binder and purposely provided cloud resources but could also be run locally through a Docker image and Docker Compose. Participants were expected to be familiar with the Jupyter environment (Python 3) and the most common EO libraries (e.g. GDAL / Rasterio, pandas + numpy, scipy). The recorded part includes the introduction of the exercise in the context of the BETTER project.

In 2013, the establishment of a European Border Surveillance System (‘EUROSUR’) by the Council of the European Union (EU) deemed necessary in order to strengthen the exchange of information and the operational cooperation between national authorities of EU Member States as well as with the FRONTEX.
EUROSUR will provide those authorities and FRONTEX with the infrastructure and tools needed to improve their situational awareness and reaction capability at the external borders, for the purpose of detecting, preventing and combating illegal immigration and cross-border crime and contributing to ensuring the protection and saving the lives of migrants.
The EU judged that the establishment of EUROSUR, could not be sufficiently achieved by Member States alone but it would be better achieved at Union level. EUROSUR is a decentralised system of (existing) systems, which is established gradually in three phases.
EUROSUR’s PHASE 2deals with research and development to improve the performance of surveillance tools and sensors (e.g. satellites, unmanned aerial vehicles), and developing a common application of surveillance tools.
This paper examines the state of play of the EU’s Common Application of Surveillance Tools and the challenges that lie ahead for its full implementation.

There are lots of efforts being made by public transport corporations to improve public vehicle occupancy
by requesting the public to use public transport over other modes of transportation. It can be noted that if
the passenger knows with high confidence that the bus is going to come, he/she will definitely wait rather
than opting for other modes of transport. Efficient information can therefore help the users to choose faster
and more easier connections which saves their time. Trends in wireless technology like Global System for
Mobile communication (GSM) and Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) have resulted in easier and
faster communication. This paper presents a vehicle tracking system by integrating both of the above
mentioned technologies. The central server uses geographic information system (GIS) to track vehicles to
display the position information on the electronic map. This paper suggests a new cost-effective way for
tracking a vehicle in public transport domain and compares proposed technique to some of the methods
advised previously for tracking public vehicles.

Civilisations have always wondered what is beyond the sky. But it is only recently that the limitless possibilities provided by space science and technology came into stronger spotlight and started to be used to the full. The EU has been playing a significant role in this process, in particular through the FP7 space research programme. The 5th FP7 space call brochure – through presentation of 50 projects divided into four categories (Copernicus applications and data; space technologies; space science and data exploitation; cross-cutting issues) – aims at giving a comprehensive overview of Europe's endeavours to fully, yet sustainably, use space for purposes ranging from excellent reception of TV signal to helping victims of earthquakes and other natural disasters
With the adoption in April and the launch of S1A, the European Programme for Earth Observation, Copernicus, will deliver European information services based on satellite Earth Observation and in-situ data analyses. It is the first time that vast amounts of global data from satellites and from ground-based, airborne and seaborne measurement systems are being used to provide information to help service providers, public authorities and other international organisations improve the quality of life for the citizens of Europe. The information services provided will be freely and openly accessible to users.
The services address six thematic areas: land, marine, atmosphere, climate change, emergency management and security.
Copernicus Services support a broad range of environmental and security applications, including sustainable development, transport and mobility, climate change monitoring, civil protection, urban area management, regional and local planning, agriculture and health.
The wealth of space based data is an important opportunity to develop innovative space applications. Copernicus Services will have to evolve to remain in tune with the state-of-art, adjusting to user's requirement and new developments need. Thanks to H2020, the Europe's research Programme, this will be guaranteed.

Explanation of a pilot EUMETSAT undertook to disseminate high volume satellite data via GÉANT - pan-European data network for the research and education community.
Slide presentations developed to demonstrate how Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) be used to address climate change, and why ICTs are a crucial part of the solution – i.e. in promoting efficiency, Green Growth & sustainable development, in dealing with climate change and for climate and environmental action. These slide presentations were delivered in February 2011 in Seongnam, near Seoul in Korea.
These presentations were developed and delivered over 2.5 days on the occasion of a Regional Training of Trainers Workshop for upcoming Academy modules on ICT for Disaster Risk Management and Climate Change Abatement. These modules were developed as part of the Academy of ICT Essentials for Government leaders developed by the United Nations (UN) Asia Pacific Centre for ICT Training (APCICT), based in Songdo City, in the Republic of South Korea.
These presentations were developed in 2011, and are somewhat out of date, but most of the principles still apply. Module 10, which has been published, does not include much of the information outlined in these presentations, which are fairly technical. They were developed to address a significant gap in understanding of the technical basis of using ICTs for climate action and because there is a clear bias in development circles against the importance of dealing with climate change mitigation in developing countries. These presentations are an attempt to redress this lack and are published here with this purpose in mind.
The author, Richard Labelle, is presently working on updating these presentations to further highlight the importance of addressing climate change and the important role that technology including ICTs, play in this effort.
Linking EUDAT services to the EGI Fed-Cloud - EUDAT Summer School (Hans van P...EUDAT
The main goal of the EGI-EUDAT collaboration is to harmonise the two eInfrastructures, including technical interoperability, authentication, authorisation and identity management, policy and operations. As main objective, this work is to provide end-users with a seamless access to an integrated infrastructure offering both EGI and EUDAT services and then, pairing data and high-throughput computing resources together. Selected user communities are able to bring requirements and help assign the right priorities to each of them. In this way, the integration activity has been driven by the end users from the start. The use case permits a user of either e-infrastructure to instantiate a VM on the EGI Cloud Federation for the execution of a computational job consuming data preserved onto EUDAT resources. The results of such analysis can be staged back to EUDAT storages, and if needed, allocated with Persistent identifiers (PIDs) for future use. To implement all the steps of this use case the following integration activities between the two infrastructures has to be fulfilled: (1) harmonisation between the authentication and authorisation model, (2) definition and implementation of the interfaces between the involved EGI and EUDAT services.
