- Most of us know it’s not “simple” at all…..
- How many of you became librarians because of your love of reading? (poll) Think about it: share with us one thing that you love about reading.
- How many of you came up with a reason for loving reading that teens can relate to as well? (poll) -- so why don’t they like to read ( or why do we think they don’t like to read? )
- HarperCollins: young adult book sales make up about 25 percent of the company's revenues - and they're growing. (2011) If your teens aren’t reading books from your library… why?
- Maybe it isn’t so hard after all….
- How many of you are familiar with at least 3 of these books? 5? 7? (poll) How many of you have already ordered at least some of these titles for your library? (poll) -- In order to have new literature coming in all the time, we must place frequent orders (once a month) -- one of the ways you can do this is to create orders/shopping carts in advance DON’T make the mistake of thinking that teens will like all the same books you do. You’re old, no matter what your age.

- What are some other connections you can make for them? – video games --pop culture -- current events (local, school & world) How can you capitalize on this? -- book displays & lists -- viewing parties/activities -- use these to familiarize yourself with some books you might not read
- Do the research Get your faculty & administration on board -- model reading -- create an army of book whisperers Classroom book talks Why do we only do story times for little kids? Why do we stop giving kids class time to check out library books when they leave elementary school? We stop supporting recreational reading right when kids need the most encouragement. Go to the classrooms. Bring kids to the library. TALK to them about books! Get teachers to give students time in class to read. Ask teachers to tell kids that when the finish a test/assignment/have free time in class they should be reading – not talking or doing other homework. Offer incentives for this! Marketing: begin to think of your library as a business (this can spread into all services you offer) --think of your students as your customers. How can you “sell” reading to them?”

- Does reading = delayed gratification in the minds of most teens? Need for instant gratification: ebooks -you don’t have to have an ereader to read ebooks, just a computer
- Technology Today’s library has to be up-to-date with technology in order for teens to give it any credit. And, as a school librarian, you have to be up to date in order for them to give you any credit. Type in the chat one tech tool you might be able to use to encourage teens to read
