Adam and Eve- Sin the Invisible Trap

       Genesis Chapter 2 & 3

Goodmorning!

This morning we are talking about the Adam and Eve. If you could please turn with me to
Genesis 2:7-9

"Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into
his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being. Now the Lord God had
planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed. The Lord
God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground—trees that were pleasing to the eye
and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the
knowledge of good and evil."

"The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and
take care of it. And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any
tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil,
for when you eat from it you will certainly die.”
Adam and Eve were given simple instructions "Do not eat from the tree of knowledge"
Chapter 3:1-6
"Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had
made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the
garden’?” The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden,
but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden,
and you must not touch it, or you will die.’” “You will not certainly die,” the serpent said
to the woman. “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and
you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” When the woman saw that the fruit of the
tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom,
she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he
ate it. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so
they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves."

Application: You see sin is all fun and games until you get caught. Adam and Eve knew
that they had fallen into temptaion and were going to be in trouble with God. Sometimes
we as humans know that what we are about to do is wrong. But go through with it any
how. There may not be a talking serpent trying to get us to give in but there is an invisible
trap.

Genesis 3:17- 19

"To Adam he said, “Because you listened to your wife and ate fruit from the tree
about which I commanded you, ‘You must not eat from it,’ “Cursed is the ground
because of you;
through painful toil you will eat food from it all the days of your life. It will produce
thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field. By the sweat of your
brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken;
for dust you are and to dust you will return.”

Conclusion: We learn from Adam and Eve that sometimes our sins can cost us. The short
'yahoo' you get from it can make things very complicated in the long run. We as children
of God must work hard at resisting the devil. He calls us to obedience. Weather we know
the consequence or not it is important to obey what He has commanded of us to do and
not do.

Noah and the Ark- We all Face Floods in Our Lives

       Genesis 6 & 7

Goodmorning! Turn with me to Genesis 6:9-22.

"Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he
walked faithfully with God. Noah had three sons: Shem, Ham and Japheth. Now the
earth was corrupt in God’s sight and was full of violence. God saw how corrupt the earth
had become, for all the people on earth had corrupted their ways. So God said to Noah, “I
am going to put an end to all people, for the earth is filled with violence because of them.
I am surely going to destroy both them and the earth. So make yourself an ark of cypress
wood; make rooms in it and coat it with pitch inside and out. This is how you are to build
it: The ark is to be three hundred cubits long, fifty cubits wide and thirty cubits high.
Make a roof for it, leaving below the roof an opening one cubit high all around.Put a door
in the side of the ark and make lower, middle and upper decks. I am going to bring
floodwaters on the earth to destroy all life under the heavens, every creature that has the
breath of life in it. Everything on earth will perish. 18 But I will establish my covenant
with you, and you will enter the ark—you and your sons and your wife and your sons’
wives with you. You are to bring into the ark two of all living creatures, male and female,
to keep them alive with you. Two of every kind of bird, of every kind of animal and of
every kind of creature that moves along the ground will come to you to be kept alive.
You are to take every kind of food that is to be eaten and store it away as food for you
and for them.” Noah did everything just as God commanded him."
Before the flood came God saw that Noah was a godly man and was obedient. He
obeyed everything that God had commanded him to do.
Genesis 7:17-22
"For forty days the flood kept coming on the earth, and as the waters increased
they lifted the ark high above the earth. The waters rose and increased greatly on the
earth, and the ark floated on the surface of the water. They rose greatly on the earth, and
all the high mountains under the entire heavens were covered. The waters rose and
covered the mountains to a depth of more than fifteen cubits.Every living thing that
moved on land perished—birds, livestock, wild animals, all the creatures that swarm over
the earth, and all mankind. Everything on dry land that had the breath of life in its nostrils
died. 23 Every living thing on the face of the earth was wiped out; people and animals
and the creatures that move along the ground and the birds were wiped from the earth.
Only Noah was left, and those with him in the ark."
Application: Sometimes we have major floods in our life. A death in the family, a
divorce, car accident, an eviction notice. They can happen with out any warning. But it is
what we do during those floods that will determine if we will survive them or not.
Genesis 8:1
"But God remembered Noah and all the wild animals and the livestock that were
with him in the ark, and he sent a wind over the earth, and the waters receded."
Conclusion: Noah stuck with God, he obeyed when He was told to build a gigantic ark.
When we stick close to God and follow His will, no matter what situation we come at we
will make it through it! The water may be high but we having a Father who is always
watching over us and the flood will recede.

Joseph- The Power of Forgiveness
       Genesis 37 & 45
Goodmorning! Turn with me to Genesis 37:17-20
"So Joseph went after his brothers and found them near Dothan. But they saw him
in the distance, and before he reached them, they plotted to kill him. “Here comes that
dreamer!” they said to each other.“Come now, let’s kill him and throw him into one of
these cisterns and say that a ferocious animal devoured him. Then we’ll see what comes
of his dreams.”
continue to verse 26-28
Judah said to his brothers, “What will we gain if we kill our brother and cover up
his blood?Come, let’s sell him to the Ishmaelites and not lay our hands on him; after all,
he is our brother, our own flesh and blood.” His brothers agreed. So when the Midianite
merchants came by, his brothers pulled Joseph up out of the cistern and sold him for
twenty shekels of silver to the Ishmaelites, who took him to Egypt."
Jospeh's brothers sold him into slavery! All because they were jealous of him. While in
Egypt Potter's wife tried to make it look like Joseph had tried to sleep with her and for
that he got put in jail. While in jail he met the baker and cupbearer. After giving the
interpretation for their dreams once the cupbearer got out he forgot to tell the pharaoh and
Joseph ended up staying in jail for another two years!
Genesis 45:4-7
"Then Joseph said to his brothers, “Come close to me.” When they had done so,
he said, “I am your brother Joseph, the one you sold into Egypt! And now, do not be
distressed and do not be angry with yourselves for selling me here, because it was to save
lives that God sent me ahead of you. For two years now there has been famine in the
land, and for the next five years there will be no plowing and reaping. But God sent me
ahead of you to preserve for you a remnant on earth and to save your lives by a great
deliverance."
Application: We see that after all the trouble Joseph's brothers put him through he still
gave them grace! Joseph had the opportunity to never reveal his identity and let the
brothers be punished and starve to death.
Conclusion: Joseph's story is a prime example of how we should forgive. Even when
someone wrongs us we shpuld still show them mercy!

Abraham- Obedience is Greater then Sacrifice
       Genesis 22
       Goodmorning!
"Some time later God tested Abraham. He said to him, “Abraham!” “Here I am,”
he replied. Then God said, “Take your son, your only son, whom you love—Isaac—and
go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on a mountain I will
show you.”
Abraham was asked by God to offer up his son as a sacrifice. Can you imagine being
asked to kill your loved one as a sacrifice?

Genesis 22:3-5
"Early the next morning Abraham got up and loaded his donkey. He took with
him two of his servants and his son Isaac. When he had cut enough wood for the burnt
offering, he set out for the place God had told him about. 4 On the third day Abraham
looked up and saw the place in the distance. 5 He said to his servants, “Stay here with the
donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back
to you.”
Genesis 22:9-12
"When they reached the place God had told him about, Abraham built an altar
there and arranged the wood on it. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on
top of the wood. Then he reached out his hand and took the knife to slay his son. But the
angel of the LORD called out to him from heaven, “Abraham! Abraham!” “Here I am,”
he replied. “Do not lay a hand on the boy,” he said. “Do not do anything to him. Now I
know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only
son.”

Application: It was a test to see Abrahams obedience. God wanted to see if Abraham was
willing to give Him all that he had, even the most precious thing to him ever. Abraham
had free will to say no and not to offer up Isaac, but He chose to obey the Lord and in
doing so won favor with God and God spared Isaac's life.
Conclusion: In the end obedience is greater then sacrifice. God can ask us to do
something to just see how we will respond. Obey, obey, obey and He will show you the
way.

Jacob- How Bad will you Fight for Your Blessing?
       Genesis 32:9-12
       Goodmorning!
"Then Jacob prayed, “O God of my father Abraham, God of my father Isaac,
LORD, you who said to me, ‘Go back to your country and your relatives, and I will make
you prosper,’ I am unworthy of all the kindness and faithfulness you have shown your
servant. I had only my staff when I crossed this Jordan, but now I have become two
camps. Save me, I pray, from the hand of my brother Esau, for I am afraid he will come
and attack me, and also the mothers with their children. But you have said, ‘I will surely
make you prosper and will make your descendants like the sand of the sea, which cannot
be counted.’”
It started with a plea to God. He knew that he could not do it on his own. He
needed the blessing of God.
Genesis 22-28
That night Jacob got up and took his two wives, his two female servants and his
eleven sons and crossed the ford of the Jabbok. After he had sent them across the stream,
he sent over all his possessions. So Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him till
daybreak. When the man saw that he could not overpower him, he touched the socket of
Jacob’s hip so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man. Then the man said,
“Let me go, for it is daybreak.” But Jacob replied, “I will not let you go unless you bless
me.” The man asked him, “What is your name?” “Jacob,” he answered. Then the man
said, “Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with
God and with humans and have overcome.”
Jacob was not going to give up until he received his blessing. He fought and fought even
until he had hurt his hip.
Application: Jacob was no dumb guy. He was smart enough to know that only with God
are all things possible. He was willing to fight for it with everything he had to receive all
that God had for him.
Conclusion: Like Jacob we need to persevere and never give up on what God may have
for us. When you have a goal in mind don't give up when times get tough. Turn to God to
be your strength! Ask for His help, don't be afraid of asking for the blessing of
achievement. How bad are you willing to fight for your blessing?

Adam and Eve Disobey God in the Garden

  • 1. GENESIS By, Hannah Greisen Adam and Eve- Sin the Invisible Trap Genesis Chapter 2 & 3 Goodmorning! This morning we are talking about the Adam and Eve. If you could please turn with me to Genesis 2:7-9 "Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being. Now the Lord God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed. The Lord God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground—trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil." Skip to verse 15-17 "The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.” Adam and Eve were given simple instructions "Do not eat from the tree of knowledge" Chapter 3:1-6 "Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’” “You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves." Application: You see sin is all fun and games until you get caught. Adam and Eve knew that they had fallen into temptaion and were going to be in trouble with God. Sometimes we as humans know that what we are about to do is wrong. But go through with it any
  • 2. how. There may not be a talking serpent trying to get us to give in but there is an invisible trap. Genesis 3:17- 19 "To Adam he said, “Because you listened to your wife and ate fruit from the tree about which I commanded you, ‘You must not eat from it,’ “Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat food from it all the days of your life. It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field. By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return.” Conclusion: We learn from Adam and Eve that sometimes our sins can cost us. The short 'yahoo' you get from it can make things very complicated in the long run. We as children of God must work hard at resisting the devil. He calls us to obedience. Weather we know the consequence or not it is important to obey what He has commanded of us to do and not do. Noah and the Ark- We all Face Floods in Our Lives Genesis 6 & 7 Goodmorning! Turn with me to Genesis 6:9-22. "Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked faithfully with God. Noah had three sons: Shem, Ham and Japheth. Now the earth was corrupt in God’s sight and was full of violence. God saw how corrupt the earth had become, for all the people on earth had corrupted their ways. So God said to Noah, “I am going to put an end to all people, for the earth is filled with violence because of them. I am surely going to destroy both them and the earth. So make yourself an ark of cypress wood; make rooms in it and coat it with pitch inside and out. This is how you are to build it: The ark is to be three hundred cubits long, fifty cubits wide and thirty cubits high. Make a roof for it, leaving below the roof an opening one cubit high all around.Put a door in the side of the ark and make lower, middle and upper decks. I am going to bring floodwaters on the earth to destroy all life under the heavens, every creature that has the breath of life in it. Everything on earth will perish. 18 But I will establish my covenant with you, and you will enter the ark—you and your sons and your wife and your sons’ wives with you. You are to bring into the ark two of all living creatures, male and female, to keep them alive with you. Two of every kind of bird, of every kind of animal and of every kind of creature that moves along the ground will come to you to be kept alive.
  • 3. You are to take every kind of food that is to be eaten and store it away as food for you and for them.” Noah did everything just as God commanded him." Before the flood came God saw that Noah was a godly man and was obedient. He obeyed everything that God had commanded him to do. Genesis 7:17-22 "For forty days the flood kept coming on the earth, and as the waters increased they lifted the ark high above the earth. The waters rose and increased greatly on the earth, and the ark floated on the surface of the water. They rose greatly on the earth, and all the high mountains under the entire heavens were covered. The waters rose and covered the mountains to a depth of more than fifteen cubits.Every living thing that moved on land perished—birds, livestock, wild animals, all the creatures that swarm over the earth, and all mankind. Everything on dry land that had the breath of life in its nostrils died. 23 Every living thing on the face of the earth was wiped out; people and animals and the creatures that move along the ground and the birds were wiped from the earth. Only Noah was left, and those with him in the ark." Application: Sometimes we have major floods in our life. A death in the family, a divorce, car accident, an eviction notice. They can happen with out any warning. But it is what we do during those floods that will determine if we will survive them or not. Genesis 8:1 "But God remembered Noah and all the wild animals and the livestock that were with him in the ark, and he sent a wind over the earth, and the waters receded." Conclusion: Noah stuck with God, he obeyed when He was told to build a gigantic ark. When we stick close to God and follow His will, no matter what situation we come at we will make it through it! The water may be high but we having a Father who is always watching over us and the flood will recede. Joseph- The Power of Forgiveness Genesis 37 & 45 Goodmorning! Turn with me to Genesis 37:17-20 "So Joseph went after his brothers and found them near Dothan. But they saw him in the distance, and before he reached them, they plotted to kill him. “Here comes that dreamer!” they said to each other.“Come now, let’s kill him and throw him into one of these cisterns and say that a ferocious animal devoured him. Then we’ll see what comes of his dreams.” continue to verse 26-28 Judah said to his brothers, “What will we gain if we kill our brother and cover up
  • 4. his blood?Come, let’s sell him to the Ishmaelites and not lay our hands on him; after all, he is our brother, our own flesh and blood.” His brothers agreed. So when the Midianite merchants came by, his brothers pulled Joseph up out of the cistern and sold him for twenty shekels of silver to the Ishmaelites, who took him to Egypt." Jospeh's brothers sold him into slavery! All because they were jealous of him. While in Egypt Potter's wife tried to make it look like Joseph had tried to sleep with her and for that he got put in jail. While in jail he met the baker and cupbearer. After giving the interpretation for their dreams once the cupbearer got out he forgot to tell the pharaoh and Joseph ended up staying in jail for another two years! Genesis 45:4-7 "Then Joseph said to his brothers, “Come close to me.” When they had done so, he said, “I am your brother Joseph, the one you sold into Egypt! And now, do not be distressed and do not be angry with yourselves for selling me here, because it was to save lives that God sent me ahead of you. For two years now there has been famine in the land, and for the next five years there will be no plowing and reaping. But God sent me ahead of you to preserve for you a remnant on earth and to save your lives by a great deliverance." Application: We see that after all the trouble Joseph's brothers put him through he still gave them grace! Joseph had the opportunity to never reveal his identity and let the brothers be punished and starve to death. Conclusion: Joseph's story is a prime example of how we should forgive. Even when someone wrongs us we shpuld still show them mercy! Abraham- Obedience is Greater then Sacrifice Genesis 22 Goodmorning! "Some time later God tested Abraham. He said to him, “Abraham!” “Here I am,” he replied. Then God said, “Take your son, your only son, whom you love—Isaac—and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on a mountain I will show you.” Abraham was asked by God to offer up his son as a sacrifice. Can you imagine being asked to kill your loved one as a sacrifice? Genesis 22:3-5 "Early the next morning Abraham got up and loaded his donkey. He took with him two of his servants and his son Isaac. When he had cut enough wood for the burnt
  • 5. offering, he set out for the place God had told him about. 4 On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance. 5 He said to his servants, “Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you.” Genesis 22:9-12 "When they reached the place God had told him about, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. Then he reached out his hand and took the knife to slay his son. But the angel of the LORD called out to him from heaven, “Abraham! Abraham!” “Here I am,” he replied. “Do not lay a hand on the boy,” he said. “Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.” Application: It was a test to see Abrahams obedience. God wanted to see if Abraham was willing to give Him all that he had, even the most precious thing to him ever. Abraham had free will to say no and not to offer up Isaac, but He chose to obey the Lord and in doing so won favor with God and God spared Isaac's life. Conclusion: In the end obedience is greater then sacrifice. God can ask us to do something to just see how we will respond. Obey, obey, obey and He will show you the way. Jacob- How Bad will you Fight for Your Blessing? Genesis 32:9-12 Goodmorning! "Then Jacob prayed, “O God of my father Abraham, God of my father Isaac, LORD, you who said to me, ‘Go back to your country and your relatives, and I will make you prosper,’ I am unworthy of all the kindness and faithfulness you have shown your servant. I had only my staff when I crossed this Jordan, but now I have become two camps. Save me, I pray, from the hand of my brother Esau, for I am afraid he will come and attack me, and also the mothers with their children. But you have said, ‘I will surely make you prosper and will make your descendants like the sand of the sea, which cannot be counted.’” It started with a plea to God. He knew that he could not do it on his own. He needed the blessing of God. Genesis 22-28 That night Jacob got up and took his two wives, his two female servants and his eleven sons and crossed the ford of the Jabbok. After he had sent them across the stream,
  • 6. he sent over all his possessions. So Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him till daybreak. When the man saw that he could not overpower him, he touched the socket of Jacob’s hip so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man. Then the man said, “Let me go, for it is daybreak.” But Jacob replied, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.” The man asked him, “What is your name?” “Jacob,” he answered. Then the man said, “Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome.” Jacob was not going to give up until he received his blessing. He fought and fought even until he had hurt his hip. Application: Jacob was no dumb guy. He was smart enough to know that only with God are all things possible. He was willing to fight for it with everything he had to receive all that God had for him. Conclusion: Like Jacob we need to persevere and never give up on what God may have for us. When you have a goal in mind don't give up when times get tough. Turn to God to be your strength! Ask for His help, don't be afraid of asking for the blessing of achievement. How bad are you willing to fight for your blessing?
