The punishment of sin

  1. 1. The punishment of sin• Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden." (Gen. 3:8) How different things were for Adam and Eve after they sinned! Before they disobeyed God, they rejoiced whenever the Lord God came into the garden to talk to them. However, now when they heard Him approaching, they trembled with fear and shame, and attempted to hide from God among the trees of the garden! Why was Adam afraid and hiding? That is not difficult to figure out. If someone is stealing from anothers field, what will he do if he hears the voice of the owner of the field? He will try to hide. In the same way, Adam, who had taken what God had forbidden, was trying to hide. Adam knew very well that he had transgressed against God.
  2. 2. God asked, "Where are you?" The Scriptures say:"[Adam] answered, I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because Iwas naked; so I hid. And the Lord God said, Who told you that you werenaked? Have you eaten from the tree from which I commanded you notto eat? [Adam] said, The woman you put here with me, she gave mesome fruit from the tree, and I ate it. Then the Lord God said to thewoman, What is this you have done? The woman said, The serpentdeceived me, and I ate." (Gen. 3:10-13)Did you hear how Adam and Eve answered God? Each tried to blamesomeone else. Adam accused both God and Eve, saying: Its not myfault! The woman you gave me--its her fault! As for Eve, she blamedthe serpent saying, Dont blame me--the serpent deceived me!However, God who knows the heart of man, knew that they were bothguilty
  3. 3. the Lord God said to the serpent, Because you have done this,Cursed are you above all the livestock and all the wild animals! Youwill crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of yourlife. And I will put enmity between you and the woman, andbetween your offspring and hers: He will crush your head and youwill strike His heel. To the woman He said, I will greatly increaseyour pains in childbearing; with pain you will give birth to children.Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you. ToAdam he said, Because you listened to your wife and ate from thetree about which I commanded you: You must not eat of it, Cursedis the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat of itall the days of your life. It will produce thorns and thistles for you,and you will eat the plants of the field. By the sweat of your browyou will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from ityou were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return."(Gen. 3:14-19)sin produced sorrow and pain, thorns and thistles, toil andsweat, sickness and death.
  4. 4. "The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife andclothed them. And the Lord God said, The man has now becomelike one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed toreach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, andlive forever. So the Lord God banished [Adam] from the Garden ofEden to work the ground from which he had been taken. After hedrove the man out, he placed on the east side of the Garden of Edencherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard theway to the tree of life." (Gen. 3:21-24)God felt compassionate towards Adam and Eve when he saw theirsufferings. Though they committed sin, he did not desert them. For,God loved them and he promised a Saviour so that they many besaved
  5. 5. The Annunciation
  6. 6. The Annunciation• God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgins name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, “Hail Mary, full of grace! The Lord is with you." Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. But the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favour with God. You are to conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High (Lk1.30-32). The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end.“• "How will this be," Mary asked the angel, "since I am a virgin?" The angel answered, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be barren is in her sixth month. For nothing is impossible with God." "I am the Lords servant," Mary answered. “Behold the handmaid of the lord. Be it done unto me according to your word“ (Lk 2:38) Then the angel left her.
  7. 7. The birth of Jesus
  8. 8. • In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world… And everyone went to his own town to register. So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.
  9. 9. Shepherds visit to Jesus
  10. 10. And there were shepherds living out in the fields near by, keeping watch overtheir flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory ofthe Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 1But the angel said tothem, "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for allthe people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he isChrist, the Lord! {Christ is the Greek form of the Hebrew word Messiah, meaning the Anointed One} This will be a sign to you: You will find a babywrapped in cloths and lying in a manger." Suddenly a great company of theheavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, "Glory toGod in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests!"When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said toone another, "Lets go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about." So they hurried off and found Mary andJoseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them… Theshepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they hadheard and seen, which were just as they had been told. Amen.
  11. 11. The wise mens visit to Jesus
  12. 12. After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magifrom the east came to Jerusalem and asked, "Where is the one who has been bornking of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him."When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. Whenhe had called together all the peoples chief priests and teachers of the law, heasked them where the Christ was to be born. "In Bethlehem in Judea," they replied,"for this is what the prophet has written: But you, Bethlehem, in the land ofJudah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come aruler who will be the shepherd of my people Israel." Then Herod called the Magisecretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. He sentthem to Bethlehem and said, "Go and make a careful search for the child. As soonas you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him." (However, inhis heart, King Herod planned to kill the child, for he did not want anyone to beking, except himself!)After [the Magi] had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they hadseen in the east went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the childwas. When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. On coming to the house, theysaw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold and ofincense and of myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to go back toHerod, they returned to their country by another route.
