The merchant had four wives that he loved to varying degrees. When he fell ill and knew he was dying, he asked each wife to keep him company in death. The three wives he loved most - the 4th, 3rd, and 2nd wives - all refused. Only his neglected 1st wife, who was skinny from malnourishment, agreed to follow him. The story suggests the four "wives" represent our pursuits in life - wealth, pleasure, reputation, and neglect of spirituality. When we die, only our spiritual development truly remains with us.
