The merchant had four wives that he loved to varying degrees. When he fell ill and asked each wife to stay with him after death, the first three wives refused. Only the first wife, whom he had neglected, agreed to follow him even after death. The story is an allegory for how people focus on their body, possessions, and relationships over their good works, which are what truly follow them.
