Let’s see, what did I learn this week? Oh right, I found out that ear buds/microphone are only
compatible with your phone and not the same as a headset for your PC. I guess the guy at target was
trying to make a sale and it’s my own fault for not researching.
I did find an interesting site called MegaMeeting.com that is similar to Blackboard Collaborate, except
it’s not free. Although, unlike Blackboard Collaborate that only has the ability to stream four users with
video, MegaMeeting can stream sixteen. I’m sure some of the other features are the same and we will
learn them as the quarter continues.
Voice over Internet Connection is another topic we touched based on this week. When I hear VoIP the
first thing that jumps into me head is Skype. I’m not familiar with the software, but look forward to
checking it out. I thought some of these features were a pretty unique way to utilize VoIP: forward a call
to a particular number, send a call directly to voice mail, give the caller a busy signal, play a "not-in-
service" message, and send the caller to a funny rejection hotline. Another interesting part of VoIP was
checking voice mail via the Web or attach messages to an e-mail that is sent to your computer. This
software would definitely be an efficient way to communicate long distances and perhaps one day may
long distance changes obsolete.
I never knew about cloud computing in health care or its involvement with electronic health records
(EHR). Apparently it reduces startup expenses, such as hardware, software, networking, personnel, and
licensing fees, and therefore will encourage its adoption. But like any new software there are also
several management, technology, security, and legal issues to be addressed when implementing such
software.
