             Safety within the school

As part of PSHE it is the school’s responsibility to make sure that all pupils feel
safe and secure while they are on the premises. Councillors were asked to
discuss with their classes:

How does the school help us feel safe?
Are there any areas where you don’t feel safe and why?
What else do we need to know to be safe in school?

Pupils generally felt safe within school knowing the gates were locked and that
all adults were very safety conscious. There were however 3 main areas where
problems occurred.

The quiet area. Pupils felt that this area was unsupervised both at break
and lunch time and some people weren’t enjoying their lunch due to
       others outside the hall windows.
Toilets. Some younger pupils were worried about the doors being kicked
open when they were in a cubicle. Others commented on the daily
problem of people deliberately blocking the toilets and sinks.
Some members of year 6 were uncomfortable in the cloakroom at home
time due to the congestion. In previous years 6Y had collected their
belongings from the cloakroom at 5 past 3 so that only one class was in
the cloakroom at a time. The year 6 councillors would discuss this with
       the year 6 teachers.

Classes in years 3 and 6 had been unable to discuss the matter.
5Y commented on the laptops and their battery life. Ella discussed this with
Mrs Rathmell who was aware of the situation but replacement costs were an
issue.

Any other business

Patrick was asked to draw up an invitation to Holy Trinity Playgroup for the
performance in church on Friday 14th at 9.30am.

The school had received a donation of over £500. Mrs Rathmell has asked that
the council discuss with their classes how this might be spent so that the whole
school will benefit.

As toilets had featured in the safety discussion, the council decided to discuss
with their classes how to address the issues, particularly with the year 3/4
block.

Date of next meeting

Monday 21st January, 1.00 in the Coach House.
