Overview
In order to perform even the most basic non-destructive test, a technical lead must be trained, and in
many cases, certified to standards like that of ASNT. "It's extremely important to be certified. This is

NDE Certification Levels
Based on experience & competency in the NDT methods personnel are Qualified as Level -I, Level –
II & Level – III.

Level 1
Level – I Inspectors are qualified to perform specific tests, equipment calibration
as per the written practice only. The decision to acceptance and reject shall be done with respect to
the written practice only. Their qualification is more technique or task based. They should work only
under the close supervision of a Level – II or Level – III.
Level 2
Level – II Inspectors are qualified to Calibrate and set up equipment, carry out testing as per the
written practice. They shall be able to interpret & evaluate as per the written practice. They shall also
develop written procedure, prepare report for the inspection and document it. They can also train &
supervise Level – I technicians. They must be familiar with all applicable codes, standards, and other
documents that control the NDT method being utilized.
Level 3
Level – III Inspectors are usually into Consultancy, Management positions in a Company. They
should be capable of establishing techniques and practice, interpreting codes, standards, and
specifications, They shall be capable of determining the particular non-destructive testing methods,
techniques, and practice to be used. They shall posses the required knowledge of the material to be
tested, the fabrication & product engineering They are also responsible for training and examining
Level I and Level II's.

COURSE CONTENTS
1) MAGNETIC PARTICLE TESTING (MPT) : LEVEL – I
Theory: Basics of Magnetism, Magnetization Techniques, Types of currents, Inspection Mediums,
Inspection Techniques, Test Equipments & Accessories, Demagnetisation, Types of Indications,
Manufacturing processes and types of discontinuities.
Practical's: Yokes, Prods, Headshot, Central Conductor and Coil Techniques, Using dry / wet
ordinary / wet fluorescent powders, Interpretation of indications, Demagnetisation , Recording of
Test results.

Theory: Basics of Magnetism & Electromagnetism, Magnetisation Techniques and selection, Types
of Currents, Inspection Mediums, Inspection Techniques, Test Equipment & Accessories,
Demagnetisation Techniques , Manufacturing Processes and types of Discontinuities, Codes,
Procedures and acceptance standards, Understanding procedures,
Practical's: Yokes, Prods, Headshot, Central Conductor, Coil Techniques, Using dry, wet ordinary
and wet fluorescent powders, Demagnetisation, Interpretation of Indications, Recording and
Reporting of Test results, Preparation of procedures.

3) LIQUID (DYE) PENETRANT TESTING (LPT) : LEVEL – I
Theory : Basics of Penetrate Testing , Penetrate Groups, Pre-cleaning Methods, Penetrate
Removal Techniques, Types of Developers and application procedures, Inspection Procedures, ,
Sensitivity & Resolution concepts, Accessories, Types of Discontinuities.
Practical's: use of Visible (Red) and Fluorescent Penetrate of various types, Use of dry/ wet/
solvent suspended developers. Interpretation of Indications, Recording of Test results.
4) LIQUID (DYE) PENETRANT TESTING (LPT) : LEVEL – II
Theory: Basics of Penetrate Testing, Preleasing Methods, Penetrate Groups, Penetrate Removal
Techniques, Type of Developers, Inspection Procedures, Sensitivity & Resolution, Accessories,
Manufacturing Processes and types of Discontinuities, Codes, Procedures and acceptance
standards, testing of Penetrate materials, Preservation of Inspection.
Practical's: Visible (Red) and Fluorescent Penetrates of various types, Use of dry / wet solvent
suspended developers. Interpretation of Indications, Recording and Reporting of Test results.
Preparation of procedures.

5) ULRASONIC TESTING (UT) : LEVEL – I
Theory : Properties of Sound Waves, Generation of Ultrasound, Interaction of ultrasound with
matter and boundaries, types of Probes, Test Techniques, Test Equipment, Instrumentation, Test
Variables, Inspection Procedures, Types of Discontinuities.
Practical's: Calibration of Equipment for various types of Probes Discontinuity Detection and
Location / Size Estimation Techniques. Recording of Test results.
6)ULRASONIC TESTING (UT) : LEVEL – II

7)RADIOGRAPHIC TESTING (RT) : LEVEL – I
Theory : Nuclear Physics, Interaction of Radiation with Matter, Shielding, Radiation Detectors,
Biological Effects, Radiation Protection, Basic safety rules, Sources of Radiation and their
characteristics, Film construction and Film Processing, Exposure Techniques and Calculations,
Sensitivity & Definition, Use of I.Q.I., Shim and Densitometers, Other Accessories, Types of
Discontinuities.
Practical's: Radiography of Castings and Welding by X-ray and Gamma ray using films.
Recording of Test results.
8)RADIOGRAPHIC TESTING (RT) : LEVEL – II
Biological Effects, Radiation Protection, Basic Rules & Techniques, Sources of Radiation and their
characteristics, Film Radiography and Film Processing, Inspection Techniques and Procedures,
Sensitivity & Definition, I.Q.I.S, Other Accessories, Types of Discontinuities.
Practical's: Radiography of Castings and Welding by X-ray and Gamma ray using films.
Interpretation of Indications, Recording and Reporting of Test results.
9)INTERPRETATION OF RADIOGRAPHS
Biological Effects, Radiation Protection, Basic Rules & Techniques, Sources of Radiation and their
characteristics, Film Radiography and Film Processing, Inspection Techniques and Procedures,
Sensitivity & Definition (Definition), I.Q.I.S, Other Accessories, Types of Discontinuities.
Practical's: INTERPRETATION OF Radiograph’s of Castings and Welding by X-ray and Gamma
ray using films.

10) VISUAL INSPECTION (VT) LEVEL – I
Theory: Introduction to Visual Testing, Fundamentals of Vision, Test Equipments such as mirrors,
magnifiers, horoscopes, fiberscope, Manufacturing Processes and Discontinuities.
Practical's: Use of Test Equipments, Inspection of Weld segments, Forgings, etc. Recording of
Test results.
11)VISUAL INSPECTION (VT) LEVEL – II
Theory: Introduction to Visual Testing, Fundamentals of Vision, Test Equipments such as mirrors,
magnifiers, horoscopes, fiberscope, Processes and Discontinuities.
Practical's: Use of Test Equipments, Inspection of Welds, Forgings, etc Interpretation of
Indications, Recording and Reporting of Test results.

12)WELDING INSPECTOR :
Theory: Attributes of a Welding Inspector, Basics of Welding Metallurgy, Major Welding
Consumables, Welding Symbols, Welding Discontinuities, welding processes, destructive and non
destructive tests on welds. codes (API 1104/ section IX)
Practical's: use of welding gauge, profile gauge, micrometer, venire, demonstration of NDT of
welds by various methods. interpretation of weld radiograph.

13)NDT FOR MANAGERS :
Theory: NDT – Definition & Philosophy, Fitness for Purpose Concept, Theory, Application and
Limitations of Various NDT Techniques, Importance of Training & Certification, Costing.
Practical's: Demonstration of Major NDT Method

14)NDT FOR ENGINEERS :
Theory: Definition and Philosophy, Fitness for Purpose, Concept NDT Methods and their
Applications, Manufacturing Processes and Discontinuities such as due to Fatigue, Stress
Corrosion, Hydrogen Embrittlement etc.. Selection of NDT Methods, and Importance of Written
Procedures, Commonly Used Codes & Standards.
Practical's: Demonstration of Major NDT Methods & Techniques.

15) NDT FOR DESIGNERS :
Theory: NDT – Definition & Philosophy, Fitness for Purpose Concept, Theory, Application and
Limitations of Various NDT Techniques, Importance of Training & Certification, Costing.
