2 The National Forest Teaching School CPD Programme 2016/17 3
As Director of the National Forest Teaching School I would like to extend a warm welcome to colleagues
throughout our area who feel that they may benefit from our extensive CPD offer for 2016/17. The National
Forest Teaching School Alliance is an Alliance of schools working collaboratively to raise student achievement
in the local area by offering high quality personalised CPD for teaching staff, support staff and Governors.
Our Teaching School ethos Learn, Teach, Grow, Share has very much guided and shaped our programme:
LEARN: We are life-long learners, always striving to enhance our learning, understanding of how children learn
and how we can overcome barriers to learning
TEACH: As life long learners we are continuously developing and refining our practice and pedagogy, drawing
on evidence based teaching and action research to enhance our own practice.
GROW: As a Teaching School part of our remit is to grow leaders and our programme reflects this. Our offer
supports staff at all stages of their professional development, from ITT, NQT and NQT+1, through to Middle
Leadership and Aspirant Heads.
SHARE: We fundamentally believe in a school led system of school improvement and want to share the
outstanding practice that we have in our Alliance with all schools in the local area.
We are very excited about our CPD offer this year. It reflects the true spirit of collaboration between our
Teaching School Partners, who have generously identified areas of expertise within their own setting which
they are willing to share and which addresses an identified need. This is complemented by a range of courses
delivered by external providers. Our offer is comprehensive across both the primary and secondary phases to
support both the achievement of excellence in learner outcomes and the development of future leaders to
sustain this excellence.
We believe that there is something for everyone in our professional development programme to support
inspirational teaching and leadership. We hope you agree.

Cracking the Challenging
Class
OVERVIEW
The Socratic method of teaching emphasises Teacher-
student dialogue. Developed from Plato’s Socratic
Dialogues, the Socratic method of teaching is a student-
centred approach that challenges learners to develop
their critical thinking skills and engage in analytical
discussion. The Socratic method can be used at any
level and with all subject areas, and lessons can be
adapted to fit a changing society.
Through a process of listening, making meaning, and
finding common ground, students work toward shared
understanding rather than trying to prove a particular
argument. A Socratic seminar is not used solely to
develop a shared meaning of a text but to explore and
discuss ideas and issues.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
The session will be of particular value to Teachers of
English and Humanities.

Network Meetings
Our network meetings are a great chance to focus on sharing good practice, professional development and promoting
developments in teaching and learning. The subject specific meetings usually take place once or twice each term and the
agenda for each meeting is set by the network members. Joining one of these networks can be a great way to get to know
other teachers in your region and share ideas. It also give members the chance to request input on particular curriculum
areas or educational developments which can be provided by inviting expert speakers to present at a meeting.
We currently have over 20 networks ranging from the subject specific; English, Health & Social Care and MFL to
Curriculum Deputies, SENCo and Science Technicians. We are constantly adding new networks as the need arises and
have had fantastic feedback from the networks that are up and running.
Network meetings are £30 per subject per year for non-members and free for alliance members. Dates and venues
change from time to time so if you are interested please contact us to confirm your attendance, this will also ensure you
are sent a copy of the minutes after each meeting.
To find out more about which networks we run or to register your attendance please contact Claire MacDonald on 01283
881079 or email c.macdonald@jths.co.uk.

School to School
Support / SLEs
The National Forest Teaching School is involved in supporting a number of schools in the local area. Through working
collaboratively we have the opportunity to share development needs and establish new partnerships to help support
the improvement of schools and ultimately pupil achievement. To ensure that we have the capacity to undertake such
work we have developed a team comprising of a National Leader of Education, 3 Local Leaders of Education and a large
number of Specialist Leaders of Education from all phases, who between them offer a range of specialisms and areas of
expertise.
All schools have very different requirements in terms of the level of support they require and we therefore tailor any
support package to individual needs. Support may include; data analysis, work scrutiny, joint lesson observations,
coaching or mentoring, delivery of whole staff training, invitation to observe outstanding practice within the Teaching
School and priority access to CPD courses and programmes.
To enquire about our support packages please contact Claire MacDonald
on 01283 881079 or email c.macdonald@jths.co.uk.

2 The NationalForest Teaching School CPD Programme 2016/17 3 As Director of the National Forest Teaching School I would like to extend a warm welcome to colleagues throughout our area who feel that they may benefit from our extensive CPD offer for 2016/17. The National Forest Teaching School Alliance is an Alliance of schools working collaboratively to raise student achievement in the local area by offering high quality personalised CPD for teaching staff, support staff and Governors. Our Teaching School ethos Learn, Teach, Grow, Share has very much guided and shaped our programme: LEARN: We are life-long learners, always striving to enhance our learning, understanding of how children learn and how we can overcome barriers to learning TEACH: As life long learners we are continuously developing and refining our practice and pedagogy, drawing on evidence based teaching and action research to enhance our own practice. GROW: As a Teaching School part of our remit is to grow leaders and our programme reflects this. Our offer supports staff at all stages of their professional development, from ITT, NQT and NQT+1, through to Middle Leadership and Aspirant Heads. SHARE: We fundamentally believe in a school led system of school improvement and want to share the outstanding practice that we have in our Alliance with all schools in the local area. We are very excited about our CPD offer this year. It reflects the true spirit of collaboration between our Teaching School Partners, who have generously identified areas of expertise within their own setting which they are willing to share and which addresses an identified need. This is complemented by a range of courses delivered by external providers. Our offer is comprehensive across both the primary and secondary phases to support both the achievement of excellence in learner outcomes and the development of future leaders to sustain this excellence. We believe that there is something for everyone in our professional development programme to support inspirational teaching and leadership. We hope you agree. The subject specific meetings usually take place once or twice each term and the agenda for each meeting is set by the network members. Joining one of these networks can be a great way to get to know other teachers in your region and share ideas. It also give members the chance to request input on particular curriculum areas or educational developments which can be provided by inviting expert speakers to present at a meeting. We currently have over 20 networks ranging from the subject specific; English, Health & Social Care and MFL to Curriculum Deputies, SENCo and Science Technicians. We are constantly adding new networks as the need arises and have had fantastic feedback from the networks that are up and running. Network meetings are £30 per subject per year for non-members and free for alliance members. Dates and venues change from time to time so if you are interested please contact us to confirm your attendance, this will also ensure you are sent a copy of the minutes after each meeting. To find out more about which networks we run or to register your attendance please contact Claire MacDonald on 01283 881079 or email c.macdonald@jths.co.uk.

56 The NationalForest Teaching School CPD Programme 2016/17 57 School to School Support / SLEs The National Forest Teaching School is involved in supporting a number of schools in the local area. Through working collaboratively we have the opportunity to share development needs and establish new partnerships to help support the improvement of schools and ultimately pupil achievement. To ensure that we have the capacity to undertake such work we have developed a team comprising of a National Leader of Education, 3 Local Leaders of Education and a large number of Specialist Leaders of Education from all phases, who between them offer a range of specialisms and areas of expertise. All schools have very different requirements in terms of the level of support they require and we therefore tailor any support package to individual needs. Support may include; data analysis, work scrutiny, joint lesson observations, coaching or mentoring, delivery of whole staff training, invitation to observe outstanding practice within the Teaching School and priority access to CPD courses and programmes.
