The Rise of People Management AnalyticsMario Faria
Data is now as integral to our 21st century economy as oil has been for many decades. With the power of data and analytics, several organizations are rethinking their business strategy completely.
However, when we look at data and analytics from an HR or people management perspective, there are some untapped opportunities to make data-driven decisions. What are some of these opportunities? Does a culture change need to happen to positively impact your company’s bottom-line?
This is the material I used at my session at the Great Place to Work Institute in Canada, on April 2015.
I discussed these questions and share case studies on how some organizations are now using their second most important asset (data) to manage their most important asset (people).
Using Lean Principles to Manage the Data Value ChainMario Faria
Creating and managing a data office is not an easy task. The reasons for so many problems in streamlining a data strategy come from lack of data ownership, lack of a data roadmap and the data processes not clearly defined.
Using the Lean Principles that come from the Toyota Production System is one method that has been proved to be quite successful.
This session delivered for the Data Quality Pro Summit explores how it can be done.

Acting on Analytics - How to Build a Data-Driven Enterprise - Brighttalk webi...Mario Faria
Big Data and Analytics have become a major topic of discussion, catalyzing attention among the C-Level executives and driving investments and projects inside the enterprise. However, there is one component that can halt any initiative: YOUR COMPANY's ANALYTICS MATURITY.
How prepared is your company to implement and use the available data, the high end modeling techniques and the data as well as analytics expertise?
From what I have learned and experienced, companies are still not adequately prepared, hurting their ability to compete in the market.
This presentation will help executives and data professionals to understand the steps needed to create an analytics organization, and provide some real life examples on companies who succeeded and some who failed miserably.
The Chief Data Officer Golden Rules to Data Quality and Data Governance SuccessMario Faria
At the dawn of 2015, there are around 400 Chief Data Officers working in the world. And that number will double by the end of the year. Everywhere in the world corporations have realized that data can become a lever for competitive advantage.
However, how can CDOs succeed in creating and managing Data Quality and Data Governance initiatives? For my previous personal experiences, I can say it is not an easy task.
This material was delivered in an IAIDQ webinar presented in January 8th 2015. It shows the golden rules a Chief Data or Analytics Officer can apply in order to really make data a pristine asset for the business.

The Chief Data Officer's Agenda: The Need for Information Governance ControlsDATAVERSITY
Information professionals are working in a proverbial fishbowl, always under watchful scrutiny. Increases in regulations, data standards, and competitive environments, coupled with an explosion of information and data assets across the organization, have led to significant challenges in the world of information. Financial regulations such as Basel III are redefining the control landscape. The Affordable Care Act, and extensions within HIPPA, are redefining Healthcare. Data Governance is maturing into Information Governance based on further expansions into business operations, legal, records management, information security and an awareness of the need to focus on derived information over pure data. Against this backdrop, CXO executives are demanding more and more controls prior to automating financial or industry reporting to provide assurance that information is accurate. This webinar explores the nature of Information Governance controls and how the controls can lead to operational efficiencies and reduction of multiple enterprise risk factors.
This webinar will provide an overview of:
The emergence of Information Governance
The nature of typical information landscape across an organization
The definition and need for Information Governance Controls
How Information Governance Controls drive operational efficiency and risk reduction
Critical success factors to integrated controls into overall Information Governance frameworks

Data Insights and Analytics Webinar: CDO vs. CAO - What’s the Difference?DATAVERSITY
At one time, there were well-stated distinctions between the Chief Data Officer and Chief Analytics Officer roles. But not today. In some organizations, this role confusion actually causes serious concerns.
John and Kelle will revisit the definitions, suggest where lack of clarity first began, and discuss how best to manage the role distinctions going forward.
This webinar will address:
Differences in the CAO and CDO roles
CDOs who aren’t responsible for all organizational data
Why role clarity matters
Organizational success without one or both roles
Improving Data Analytics with Data GovernanceDATAVERSITY
Organizations are dedicating tremendous resources to improve their analytical capabilities. The focus for many is to improve the quality, understanding, availability and thus the value of the data for data scientists and analysts. These people are focused on providing descriptive, predictive and prescriptive analytics for the betterment of their organization. It all starts with governed data.
Join Bob Seiner and a special guest for this month’s installment of the Real-World Data Governance webinar series where they will discuss the importance of using Data Governance to improve Data Analytics. Bob will challenge the guest with questions about why and how data governance has a positive impact on getting the most out of your data.
In this webinar, Bob and his guest will discuss:
The relationship between Data Governance and Data Analytics
Getting management to understand why Data Governance is necessary
How to focus your Data Governance program on analytics
Using the focus on analytics to bolster your Data Governance program
Final words on the symbiotic relationship between Data Governance and Data Analytics
Organizations across most industries make some attempt to utilize Data Management and Data Strategies. While most organizations have both concepts implemented, they must fully understand the difference to fully achieve their goals.
This webinar will cover three lessons, each illustrated with examples, that will help you distinguish the difference between Data Strategy and Data Management processes and communicate their value to both internal and external decision-makers:
Understanding the difference between Data Strategy and Data Management
Prioritizing organizational Data Management needs vs. Data Strategy needs
Discuss foundational Data Management and Data Strategy concepts based on “The DAMA Guide to the Data Management Body of Knowledge” (DAMA DMBOK)
A Practical Guide to Implementing Effective BI GovernanceDATAVERSITY

This webinar will help de-mystify Data Strategy and Data Architecture and will provide concrete, practical ways to get started.
Noise to Signal - The Biggest Problem in DataDATAVERSITY
Our ability to produce, ingest and store data has grown exponentially, but our ability to parse out insights from data has not. In the 90s, an organization’s data would live in a data warehouse with an ETL pipeline and one reporting layer on top. Information was well controlled if not somewhat limited in breadth and slow to trickle down. Now with the onset of self-service analytics, anyone can create a report and an insight and there are many different sources of “truth.” For example, a seemingly straightforward question like "how many customers do we have?" will likely return difference answers from sales, finance and customer success, depending on their definitions and the data at hand. There is simply too much data (and duplicate data), too many tools, and too many systems storing data -- leading to time consuming searches, confusion and a lack of trust. Hear Stephanie discuss how a data catalog can help solve the noise to signal problem - making information easier to find, easier to understand and more trustworthy. She will describe how organizations like Safeway, Albertsons, Munich Re and Pfizer leverage a data catalog to find data and collaborate on data, gain a fuller understanding of its meaning and ultimately, solve important problems.

Metadata is hotter than ever, according a number of recent DATAVERSITY surveys. More and more organizations are realizing that in order to drive business value from data, robust metadata is needed to gain the necessary context and lineage around key data assets. At the same time, industry regulations are driving the need for better transparency and understanding of information.
While metadata has been managed for decades, new strategies & approaches have been developed to support the ever-evolving data landscape, and provide more innovative ways to drive business value from metadata. This webinar will provide an overview of metadata strategies & technologies available to today’s organization, and provide insights into building successful business strategies for metadata adoption & use.
Data-Centric Analytics and Understanding the Full Data Supply ChainDATAVERSITY
While model development is an important part of analytics, this activity can be compromised by a lack of understanding of the data used in these models and poor Data Quality. For insights to be relied upon and truly actionable, data-related issues must be addressed.
The data supply chain (the set of architectural components that moves data around the enterprise from points where it is created or acquired to points where it is used) must be managed to supply the needs of analytics and other constituencies.
This webinar describes how the data supply chain should be designed and operated to provide analytics with the data it needs, and how Data Scientists should interact with the data supply chain to obtain the data they need. It also covers:
Data-centric considerations that must be taken into account in the development of analytic models
Features of a modern data supply chain
Major components in the data supply chain, with a focus on Data Lakes
Major roles and responsibilities in the data supply chain
How analytics must interact with the data supply chain
Accelerate Your Move to the Cloud with Data Catalogs and GovernanceDATAVERSITY
As more data is migrating to the cloud, whether to increase efficiencies or take advantage of new capabilities like AI and machine learning tools, organizations are challenged on how to do so in a consumable, trusted fashion. Join us for this webcast and hear how enterprises are using data catalogs to unify approaches across their cloud and on-premises worlds, and prioritize which data assets should be moved to cloud, resulting in a more consumable and trusted data lake and ecosystem.
The Missing Link in Enterprise Data Governance - Automated Metadata ManagementDATAVERSITY
So many companies and organizations are in the same boat. They’re drowning in their data — so much data, from so many different sources. They understand that data governance is hugely important for them to be able to know their data inside and out and comply with regulations. What many companies have not yet come to terms with when implementing their data governance strategy and supporting tools, is the criticality of metadata in the process. As the ‘data about data,’ metadata provides the value and purpose of the data content, thereby becoming an extremely effective tool for quickly locating information – a must for BI groups dealing with analytics and business user reporting.
Octopai's CEO, Amnon Drori will discuss this critical missing link in enterprise data governance and the impact of automating metadata management for data discovery and data lineage for BI. He'll demonstrate how BI groups use Octopai to not only locate their data instantly, but to quickly and accurately visualize and understand the entire data journey to enable the business to move forward.
Most companies do not think of data when they start out, let alone the quality of that data. With the proliferation of data and the usages of that data, organizations are compelled to focus more and more on data and their quality.
Join Kasu Sista of The Wisdom Chain to understand how to think about, implement, and maintain data quality.
You will learn about:
What do data people think about?
How do you get them to listen to what you want?
Business processes and data life span
Impact of data capture and data quality on down stream business processes
Data quality metrics and how to define them and use them
Practical metadata and data governance
What are the takeaways from the session?
How to talk to your data people
Understanding the importance of capturing data in the right way
Understanding the importance of quality metrics and bench marks
Understanding of operationalizing data quality processes
The Chief Data Officer's Agenda: The Status of the Chief Data OfficerDATAVERSITY
CDOs are a hot topic of discussion, but does the reality support the hype? We spent the last few weeks talking to CDOs, and based on our research, the answer is absolutely “yes.” And then sometimes it’s also “no.” Though there is lots of prognostication about what CDOs “should” be doing, we found a lot of misinformation and misunderstanding about how the role operates in practice. The fact is that CDOs are a multi-faceted bunch. Most of them work on enterprise data strategy, but the rest of their time is highly customized to the needs of their particular organization, including analytics, data operations, and even application development. The real world of today’s CDO is varied, exciting, sometimes frustrating, and often creative! Please join John Ladley and Tony Shaw for their launch of the DATAVERSITY “Status of the CDO” Report, a thorough survey of what CDOs are doing today. We will cover topics including:
What motivates an organization to appoint a Chief Data Officer?
Who does the CDO report to?
What experience does it take to become a CDO?
Do CDOs have their own staff and budget?
How do functional responsibilities vary from industry to industry?
What are the differences between the CIO and CDO roles?
What are some of the pitfalls and unrealistic expectations for CDOs?
What issues are on the horizon for Chief Data Officers?

As the importance of having a data strategy in place is sinking in, many organizations have added a chief data officer (CDO) to their executive team to help create and implement that strategy. But every organization is doing this a little bit differently. This talk will describe how a variety of industries and organizations are using CDOs and will make recommendations for best practices.
The Chief Data Officer: Bridging the gap between data and decision-makingExperian Data Quality
Data is becoming more integral in day-to-day operations, but many organizations cannot stop seeing their data as a challenge and start leveraging it as a strategic asset. Experian Data Quality recently conducted a study of more than 250 CIOs and CDOs in the U.S. and this webinar will discuss some of the key findings of our research.
On Tuesday, August 18th, we discussed how data is an untapped resource at most organizations, the emergence of the Chief Data Officer role, and how to ensure your organization is ready for the shift that this new role brings.
Key takeaways included:
- Tips for overcoming typical data challenges within your organization
- The rise of data management and how it is affecting the CIO role
- The new and growing need for a Chief Data Officer
How to Create and Manage a Successful Analytics OrganizationDATAVERSITY
For the last few years, analytics, data science and data management have achieved tremendous exposure on all the media channels. Big Data has become a major topic of discussion, catalyzing attention among the C-Level executives and driving investments and projects inside the enterprise. However, it is really interesting that just a selected group of business has created successful data teams and has mastered the skills to manage it. What we have seen is that most companies still do not know how to create, implement and manage a data and analytics organization. Above all, if data has become an strategic asset and is being considered the new oil for the 21st century economy, what your strategy to handle it ? This webinar will help to bring some concepts and ideas to enlighten your path to create and manage an analytics organization, providing some real life examples on companies which did it.
Why there are so many problems with streamlining data strategy ? What are the major problems ? How do you solve them ?

When the data speaks, why should you listen?
Big data has become a buzzword among marketers all over the world and I am frankly sick of all the buzz without concrete value. In this context, my goal is to make Big Data real and tangible for marketers so you can realize the disruptive shift that is upon us. Every marketer is familiar with the 4 P’s of marketing (Product, Price, Place, and Promotion) so we will start our discussion in a way that begins to extend these concepts. I like to describe these as ‘The New 4 of P’s of Marketing with Big Data: Personalization, Performance, Prediction, and Privacy’

Increasing Your Business Data and Analytics MaturityDATAVERSITY
For a few years now, companies of all sizes have been looking at data as a lever to increase revenues, reduce costs or improve efficiency. However, we believe the power of using data as a strategic asset is still in its early stages. One of the main reasons for that is business leaders still do not understand that the data & analytics maturity should be seen as a long time journey and an evolving enterprise learning. This webinar will present some key points on how data management leaders can succeed in their mission by sharing some practical experiences.

Levelwise PageRank with Loop-Based Dead End Handling Strategy : SHORT REPORT ...Subhajit Sahu
Abstract — Levelwise PageRank is an alternative method of PageRank computation which decomposes the input graph into a directed acyclic block-graph of strongly connected components, and processes them in topological order, one level at a time. This enables calculation for ranks in a distributed fashion without per-iteration communication, unlike the standard method where all vertices are processed in each iteration. It however comes with a precondition of the absence of dead ends in the input graph. Here, the native non-distributed performance of Levelwise PageRank was compared against Monolithic PageRank on a CPU as well as a GPU. To ensure a fair comparison, Monolithic PageRank was also performed on a graph where vertices were split by components. Results indicate that Levelwise PageRank is about as fast as Monolithic PageRank on the CPU, but quite a bit slower on the GPU. Slowdown on the GPU is likely caused by a large submission of small workloads, and expected to be non-issue when the computation is performed on massive graphs.

Techniques to optimize the pagerank algorithm usually fall in two categories. One is to try reducing the work per iteration, and the other is to try reducing the number of iterations. These goals are often at odds with one another. Skipping computation on vertices which have already converged has the potential to save iteration time. Skipping in-identical vertices, with the same in-links, helps reduce duplicate computations and thus could help reduce iteration time. Road networks often have chains which can be short-circuited before pagerank computation to improve performance. Final ranks of chain nodes can be easily calculated. This could reduce both the iteration time, and the number of iterations. If a graph has no dangling nodes, pagerank of each strongly connected component can be computed in topological order. This could help reduce the iteration time, no. of iterations, and also enable multi-iteration concurrency in pagerank computation. The combination of all of the above methods is the STICD algorithm. [sticd] For dynamic graphs, unchanged components whose ranks are unaffected can be skipped altogether.
