Spiritual death, according to Christianity, is our natural state of separation from God prior to accepting Christ. We are spiritually dead due to sin, lacking spiritual life and the ability to save ourselves. It is only through Jesus Christ that humans can be raised from spiritual death. By believing in Jesus, who is the resurrection and the life, Christians receive eternal life and are saved from the second death of eternal damnation after physical death. Even believers can experience the "death-like symptoms of sin" when they rebel through sin, feeling distant from God, but Jesus saves believers from spiritual death.
