WHAT IS DEATH?
DEATH as applied to man means Separation or a cutting off from realizing God’s purpose for which he was
created.
THERE ARE THREE TYPES OF DEATH.
1 PHYSICAL DEATH :

2. Is the separation of the inner man (soul and spirit) from the outer man or body. Man
is a spirit, has a soul and encompassed by a body like a space suite.
“As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without actions is dead” JAMES 2:26
The body dies and goes back to the dust.

3. Is the separation of man from the nature, environment and correspondence with
God as a result of sin. A person that is spiritually dead can be alive physically.
“Surely the arm of the Lord is not too short to save, nor His ear too dull to hear But
your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden His face from you,
so that he will not hear you.” ISAIAH 59:1-2
“The widow who is really in need and left all alone puts her hope in God and
continues day and night to pray and to ask God for help But the widow who lives for
pleasure is dead even while she lives.” 1 TIMOTHY 5:5-6
“When you were dead in your sins and in the circumcision of your sinful nature, God made
you alive with Christ. He forgave all your sins. COLOSSIANS 2:13
He can also be physically dead but alive in hell, conscious in the soul and spirit or
inner man
“There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury
everyday. At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus.
The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side. The rich
man also died and was buried. In hell, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw

4. Abraham far away , with Lazarus by his side. so he called to him, Father Abraham, have pity
on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because i
am in agony in this fire.” LUKE 16:19-24
3. ETERNAL DEATH or SECOND DEATH:
Means the second and eternal separation from God in the lake of fire. It is the
penalty for sin. When man chooses to remain separated from God in sin.
“Then He will say to those on his left, Depart from me, you who are cursed , into the
eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels”
Then they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life” MATTHEW
25:41,46
“He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. He who
overcomes will not be hurt at all by the second death” REV.2:11

5. “Blessed and holy are those who have part in the first resurrection. The second
death have no power over them, but they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign
with him for a thousand years” REV.20:6
The spirit and the soul are immortal and are either dead in sins or in possession of
eternal life in Christ at the time of physical death.
RESURRECTION FROM SPIRITUAL DEATH
Man is resurrected from spiritual death or separation from God
1 when one is saved from death in sin.
“As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins in which you used to live,
when you followed the ways of this world and the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit
who is now at work in those who are disobedient. All of us also lived among them at one
time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desire and thoughts. Like
the rest we were by nature objects of wrath. But because of his great love for us, God who is
rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions, it is by
grace you have been saved.
For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith not by yourselves, it is a gift from God
not by works. EPHESIANS 2:1-5,8
2. When one is born again.

6. “Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a member of the
Jewish ruling council. He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi, we know you are a
teacher who has come from God. For no one perform the miraculous signs you are doing if
God were not with him.
Jesus replied,
“I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born
again”
How can a man be born when he is old? Nicodemus asked. “surely, he cannot enter a
second time into his mother’s womb to be born”
Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born
of water and Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit”. JOHN 3:1-6
3. When one becomes a new creature
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things has passed
away, all things have become new” All this is from God , who reconciled us to himself
through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation. 2 CORINTHIANS 5:17-18
You become a new person! Your sinful nature is passed away.
4. When one is reconciled with God throughChrist.

7. ” Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your
evil behavior. But now he has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to
present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation
