Ukraine: New Fields of Investment OpportunitiesTaras Kutoviy
The document discusses new investment opportunities in Ukraine's agriculture sector following reforms to land ownership, state support programs, and privatization of state-owned enterprises. Key points made include that Ukraine has over 41 million hectares of fertile black soil and can help meet the world's growing food needs. The reforms aim to attract foreign investment into sectors like cereals and oilseeds processing, meat and poultry production, fruits and vegetables, and biofuel production like bioethanol from sunflowers. Infrastructure needs to be modernized with investments in ports, farming equipment, storage facilities, and rail transport.
In 2016, export of Ukrainian agrarian products to Indonesia reached $ 128.3 mln. It consists of wheat, wheat flour, poultry eggs, spices (coriander) and corn starch.

This document provides details on the planned rotational grazing schedule and herd management for Ranney Ranch in Corona, New Mexico from April to August 2008. It also discusses the ranch's efforts to sequester carbon through sustainable grazing practices and removing invasive juniper trees for use as biomass. The ranch aims to improve rangeland health and water retention while exploring the potential to market biomass and any resulting carbon offsets.

- Last year was another strong year for Irish agri-food exports, reaching €19 billion, up 22% from 2021. Increased value rather than volume drove this growth.
- 2023 has been challenging for farmers due to difficult weather, high costs of inputs like feed and fertilizer, and market pressures. The new nitrates regulations are also causing concerns for dairy farmers.
- While cattle numbers increased in 2023, beef cow numbers declined and the suckler herd continues shrinking. Combined with weaker export markets, this depressed prices paid to beef farmers. Pig producers also struggled for over a year but profits have recently returned.
This document discusses the potential for oil seed crops like sunflower and oil seed rape (OSR) to replace soy in organic poultry feed in the UK. Sunflower meal has good nutritional properties for poultry like adequate levels of sulfur-containing amino acids. Both sunflower and certain OSR varieties can make useful contributions to organic poultry rations. However, UK production of OSR is currently very small and limited by agronomic and economic factors. Sunflower has more potential as it grows well in parts of southern England and Wales and is easier to produce organically in the UK climate than OSR.

Energy crops
Introduction
An energy crop is a plant grown as a low-cost and low-maintenance harvest used to make biofuels, such as bioethanol, or combusted for its energy content to generate electricity or heat. Energy cropsare generally categorized as woody or herbaceous plants; many of the latter are grasses (Graminaceae).
Commercial energy crops are typically densely planted, high-yielding crop species where the energy crops will be burnt to generate power. Woody crops such as willow or poplar are widely utilised, as well as temperate grasses such as Miscanthus and Pennisetum purpureum (both known as elephant grass). If carbohydrate content is desired for the production of biogas, whole-crops such as maize,Sudan grass, millet, white sweet clover and many others, can be made into silage and then converted into biogas.
Through genetic modification and application of biotechnology plants can be manipulated to create greater yields, reduce associated costs and require less water. However, high energy yield can be realized with existing cultivars.
Type of energy crops
1. Solid biomass
Energy generated by burning plants grown for the purpose, often after the dry matter is pelletized. Energy crops are used for firing power plants, either alone or co-fired with other fuels. Alternatively they may be used for heat or combined heat and power (CHP) production.
2. Gas biomass (methane)
Anaerobic digesters or biogas plants can be directly supplemented with energy crops once they have been ensiled into silage. The fastest growing sector of German biofarming has been in the area of "Renewable Energy Crops" on nearly 500,000 ha of land (2006) Energy crops can also be grown to boost gas yields where feedstocks have low energy content, such as manures and spoiled grain. It is estimated that the energy yield presently of bioenergy crops converted via silage to methane is about 2 GWh/km². Small mixed cropping enterprises with animals can use a portion of their acreage to grow and convert energy crops and sustain the entire farms energy requirements with about 1/5 the acreage. In Europe and especially Germany, however, this rapid growth has occurred only with substantial government support, as in the German bonus system for renewable energy. Similar developments of integrating crop farming and bioenergy production via silage-methane have been almost entirely overlooked in N. America, where political and structural issues and a huge continued push to centralize energy production has overshadowed positive developments.
3. Liquid biomass
Biodiesel
European production of biodiesel from energy crops has grown steadily in the last decade, principally focused on rapeseed used for oil and energy. Production of oil/biodiesel from rape covers more than 12,000 km² in Germany alone, and has doubled in the past 15 years. Typical yield of oil as pure biodiesel may be is 100,000 L/km² or more, making biodiesel crops economically attra

Cell Therapy Expansion and Challenges in Autoimmune DiseaseHealth Advances
There is increasing confidence that cell therapies will soon play a role in the treatment of autoimmune disorders, but the extent of this impact remains to be seen. Early readouts on autologous CAR-Ts in lupus are encouraging, but manufacturing and cost limitations are likely to restrict access to highly refractory patients. Allogeneic CAR-Ts have the potential to broaden access to earlier lines of treatment due to their inherent cost benefits, however they will need to demonstrate comparable or improved efficacy to established modalities.
In addition to infrastructure and capacity constraints, CAR-Ts face a very different risk-benefit dynamic in autoimmune compared to oncology, highlighting the need for tolerable therapies with low adverse event risk. CAR-NK and Treg-based therapies are also being developed in certain autoimmune disorders and may demonstrate favorable safety profiles. Several novel non-cell therapies such as bispecific antibodies, nanobodies, and RNAi drugs, may also offer future alternative competitive solutions with variable value propositions.
Widespread adoption of cell therapies will not only require strong efficacy and safety data, but also adapted pricing and access strategies. At oncology-based price points, CAR-Ts are unlikely to achieve broad market access in autoimmune disorders, with eligible patient populations that are potentially orders of magnitude greater than the number of currently addressable cancer patients. Developers have made strides towards reducing cell therapy COGS while improving manufacturing efficiency, but payors will inevitably restrict access until more sustainable pricing is achieved.
Despite these headwinds, industry leaders and investors remain confident that cell therapies are poised to address significant unmet need in patients suffering from autoimmune disorders. However, the extent of this impact on the treatment landscape remains to be seen, as the industry rapidly approaches an inflection point.

5. Acid from Rice Husks Replaces Expensive, Patented Enzyme in Biofuel Production
Feb 27, 2014
Turning unused plant products – like rice husks – into fuel has skyrocketed in popularity. In 2010, global
biofuel production was at an impressive 28 billion gallons, about 17% higher than the previous year. With
traditional fuel prices rising and concerns about the environmental consequences of accessing and transporting
crude oil dominating the media, those numbers are only going to get larger. Some countries, such as Denmark,
already require that a certain percentage of ethanol is added to all gasoline sold in the country. Some countries
allow companies to add up to 85% bioethanol to gasoline.Currently, Brazil and the U.S. are responsible for
producing the majority of the world’s bioethanol, a specific type of biofuel that is made by fermenting
carbohydrates found in plants containing sugar and starch. Most biofuels are so-called first-generation biofuels,
which are made from sugars and vegetable oils in arable crops, making them easily extracted – but these
biofuels are controversial because they use crops that could otherwise be used for food, like corn and
sugarcane.
Increasingly, researchers are developing ways to utilize non-food parts of the plant in the production of
bioethanol.A way to make these so-called second-generation biofuels – biofuels made from agricultural residue
or waste– already exists. But because the extraction process for getting the necessary fuel out of the plant parts
is more difficult with second-generation biofuels, it is a costly and complicated process that utilizes expensive,
patented enzymes controlled by a handful of large companies.
Now, new research by professors from the University of Southern Denmark, the University of Baghdad, and AlMuthanna Unversity in Iraq highlights a new technique that produces biofuel without that valuable
enzyme. One of the Danish researchers, Per Morgen, explained that this project worked to develop a way to
produce bioethanol from cellulose, a tough, woody part of the plant that can be difficult to break
down. Cellulose is the part of the cell wall in plants that gives them their semi-rigid structure, and while
humans can partially digest cellulose, it’s not a rich nutrient source. Just like it’s difficult for humans to digest
cellulose, it’s more difficult to break cellulose down into sugar to create bioethanol.
The researchers found that rather than using an enzyme, the key to breaking down cellulose is an acid – an acid
called RHSO3H that is made from rice husks. The rice husks are burned and the resulting ash contains a high
amount of silicate. When chlorosulfonic acid was combined with the silicate particles, a new molecule resulted
– RHSO3H. This is the molecule that can break the cellulose down to sugar that can then be fermented into
alcohol to create the bioethanol. What’s most notable about this technique is, well, how logical it is! Each year,
80-130 million tons of rice husks are discarded or burnt (it’s hard to know an exact number, and estimates
vary). Using those rice husks for fuel keeps them out of landfills, and the use of bioethanol instead of gasoline
reduces CO2 emissions and fossil fuel consumption, a win-win for the environment. Selling rice husks also
provides another potential revenue source for rice-growing regions, who can export them to fuel-dependent
countries. Furthermore, the process can’t be patented, making it more accessible to smaller companies. Making
bioethanol cheaper and more accessible means even more may be produced, increasing competition, options for
use, and available products, and, possibly, decreasing the price of biofuel. ith rice husks being repurposed for

demand for rice husks increase in the coming years.

Philippines Rice Prices Soar Due to Shortfall in Supply
Feb 27, 2014
Rice prices in the Philippines have increased sharply in the week ending February 21, 2014, with increases of
up to 8% seen in some markets compared to the previous week prices.According to official sources, sharp
increases in rice prices were seen in cities of Batangas, Legaspi, Cebu and Naga. In Batangas, average prices of
well-milled rice increased to around P40 per kilogram (about $897 per ton), up about 8% from around P37 per
kilogram (about $830 per ton) in the previous week. Prices of regular-milled rice in Batangas stand at around
P37 per kilogram 9aabout $830 per ton), up about 3% from around P36 per kilogram (about $807 per ton) in the
previous week, and up about 10% from average prices of regular-milled rice in 2013.Average prices of rice
provided by the National Food Authority (NFA) remained stable at around P27 – P32 per kilogram (about $605
– $717 per ton), but stocks with the NFA remain limited.
According to the Bureau of Agriculture Statistics (BAS), total rice stocks in the Philippines stood at around 2.12
million tons as of January 1, 2014, which could last for 62 days or up to February 2014. NFA stocks of around
270,000 tons as of January 1, 2014 were enough to last just 8 days.
The NFA says that rice prices are expected to decline by around P2 – P4 per kilogram (about $45 – $90 per ton)
during March – May 2014 due to higher supplies from the harvest season. owever, prices may increase again
during the lean months after that, the NFA says. Local sources say that rice prices are increasing due to the
crackdown on smuggling, while some economists suggest that the government should remove the quantitative

Thailand PM Lawyers Seek 15 Days to Respond to Rice Mortgage Program
Corruption Charges
Feb 27, 2014
The legal team of Thailand’s caretaker Prime Minister’s Pheu Thai party has said that it will respond to charges
by the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) within 15 days, as pro-government protestors surfaced in
Bangkok and other places to prevent a judicial coup in the country. The NAAC is investigating at least 15 cases
against the PM, but it had summoned the PM today to hear charges over the populist rice mortgage program.

9. The program was an electoral pledge of the PM’s Pheu Thai party and was implemented in October 2011.
While the program promised about 40-50% higher than market rates to rice farmers, it has caused losses of
around $4.4 billion to the government so far. Rice exports plunged in 2012 and 2013, and the program could not
run effectively due to lack of funds.
Opposition leaders claim that the PM was negligent in allowing the rice mortgage program to continue despite
losses and allege that the program is rife with corruption. The PM had earlier said that the rice mortgage
program benefitted the farmers and blamed the opposition for not allowing the rice mortgage program to
function. If found guilty, the PM could be removed from office and banned from politics for five years,
something that months of anti-government protests could not do so far. However, a judicial coup is unlikely
anytime soon. The Pheu Thai party hopes to gather support for the PM in the next few weeks. Local sources say
that the NAAC and the courts are unlikely to topple the government for fear of unprecedented turmoil in the
country.Meanwhile, the PM is busy firefighting of the real kind. According to state media, the PM traveled to
Chiang Mai today to assess the problem of forest fires there. Chiang Mai is the PM’s birthplace and government
supporters there say that the PM could have a temporary office in Chiang Mai, a sign that the political turmoil
in Thailand is far from over.

different crops, including rice, are negatively impacted by the heavy rains and floods. The department of Beni
accounts for around 6% of total rice production in Bolivia.Losse due to floods could lead to further decline in
rice production this year.
The FAO says that rice production in 2013 is estimated to drop to around 450,000 tons of paddy (about 310,000
tons, basis milled), down about 13% from the previous year mainly due to drought conditions and low
temperatures during the cropping season in 2013.According to the USDA, rice consumption in Bolivia in 201314 is estimated at around 350,000 tons (basis milled) and imports are expected to increase to around 40,000 tons
this year, compared to negligible quantities of imports in the previous year.

India Support Price for Rice Growing Too Fast, Says Central Bank Chief
The governor of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) says that the Indian government should slow down increases in
the Minimum Support Price (MSP) of rice and other food grains to contain food inflation.According to official
data, support prices of common paddy rice stood at around Rs. 580 per quintal in 2006-2007, but the MSP
increased by around 125% to around Rs. 1,310 per quintal in 2013-14.
According to local sources the average prices of rice in the domestic market have increased almost 100% in the

rice prices have increased in India also due to a surge in rural wages due to the government's rural employment
scheme. However, the chief of the Commission on Agricultural Costs and Prices (CACP) says that rice prices
are high in India mainly due large stocks held by the government and not due to MSPs, which are below the
FOB prices. The Indian government fixes the MSPs for paddy rice based on the recommendations of the CACP.

Hammered Following Release of Export Sales
Feb 27, 2014
Chicago rough rice futures for May delivery settled 6 cents per cwt (about $1 per ton) higher at $15.680 per cwt
(about $347 per ton). Rough rice futures experienced another day of increased volatility with the vast majority
of trade activity focused on the March/May spread. March started the day trading to a slight premium to May,

traders became desperate to exit long positions ahead of first notice day tomorrow. Today’s action saw prices
fall to and bounce off of nearby technical support near $15.600 per cwt (about $344 per ton) provided by the
10-day trading range and finished the day just above the 100-day, a level that had been noted as a point of
resistance.
This level will be likely be monitored tomorrow and its ability to support prices will be interpreted as a sign of
strength or weakness. Additionally traders will be closely monitoring open interest and for registrations of
warehouse receipts as open interest stood at 649 as of this morning. The other grains finished sharply lower
today, with wheat once again getting hammered and leading the complex lower; soybeans closed about 1%
