Priority of Akhilesh was walls of kabristan,
not development of UP: Yogi Adityanath
Gor akhpur(ANI):
Slamming the Sama-
jwadi Party (SP), Chief
Minister Yogi Adity-
anath on Sunday said
the development of the
state was never the pri-
ority of party chief
Akhilesh Yadav, who
was more interested in
building walls of ‘ka-
bristan’ (graveyards).
Addressing a public
rally at Caimpiyarganj
Assembly constituency
in Gorakhpur, the Chief
Minister said, “When I
asked an SP leader to
list development works
done under his party
, he
replied that infrastruc-
ture, medical facilities,
roads were not their
priority. He said the
party’s agenda was to
get ‘Kabristan’ bounda-
ry walls made.”
Continuing his at-
tack on the SP leader,
Adityanath said, “Ittar
Wale Mitra’ accumu-
lated the money in their
lockers, focused on
‘Sabka Saath Par Sirf
Saifai Ka Vikas’...”
He added, “If the SP
government was in
power, then COVID-19
vaccines would have
been sold in markets
and no poor person
would have got it. But
the BJP ensured that no
one was deprived of it.”
Polling for the fifth
phase of the ongoing
Assembly polls was
held on Sunday in Ayo-
dhya, Sultanpur, Chi-
trakoot, Pratapgarh,
Kaushambi, Prayagraj,
Barabaki, Bahraich,
Shrawasti, Gonda, Am-
ethi, and Raebareli dis-
tricts. As many as 692
candidates are in the
fray in the fifth phase
whose political fate will
be decided by around
2.24 crore electorate.

Felt happy when opponents wished for my death in Kashi: Modi
Varanasi (ANI): Tak-
ing a swipe at Sama-
jwadi Party (SP) chief
Akhilesh Yadav for
“wishing his death” in
Varanasi, Prime Minis-
ter Narendra Modi on
Sunday said that till
his death neither the
people of Kashi will
leave him, nor will he
leave Kashi.
Addressing ‘BJP’s
Booth Vijay Samelan’
in Varanasi, the Prime
Minister said, “I do not
like to criticise anyone
personally, but when I
was publicly wished to
die in Kashi, I really
felt very happy, my
heart felt very relaxed.
I felt that even my
staunch opponents
were seeing how much
love the people of
Kashi had for me,” PM
Modi’s remarks come
on a statement by the
SP chief after the inau-
guration of the Kashi
Vishwanath Corridor
in December last year.
“Bahut achhi baat
hai. Ek Maheena na-
hin, do mahina, teen
mahina wahin rahein.
Woh jagah rahene wali
hai. Aakhri samay par
vaheen raha jata hai,
Banaras mein (It is a
very good thing. Not
just one month. He
should stay there for
two months, three
months. That’s the
place to stay. When the
end nears, that’s
where one stays - in
Banaras),” Yadav had
said.
PM Modi further
said that the party has
given him the meritori-
ous task of serving
Kashi, sitting at the
feet of Mahadev and
Mother Ganga. “The
workers of BJP work
for the country. For all
of us, it has always
been party above indi-
vidual and country
above party. We win
elections but at the
same time we win the
hearts of the people,”
he said.
Talking about Vara-
nasi, he said that the
path of development
on which the city is go-
ing forward will open
the way for the country
to be free from poverty
and crime.
The Prime Minister
also offered prayers at
the Kashi Vishwanath
temple in Varanasi.

1ST OCTOBER, 2001…WHEN VAJPAYEE
ASKED A PERFORMER MODI TO TAKE OVER
AN EARTHQUAKE RIDDEN GUJARAT!
DOWN THE MEMORY LANE… THE MAKING OF PM MODI – PART 5
S
oon after Narendra Modi
left Gujarat and came to
Delhi over the compromise
formula, he was given the
charge of BJP’s national
secretary
. He was also made
incharge of Punjab and
Jammu & Kashmir in addi-
tion to Haryana, Chandi-
garh (UT) and Himachal
Pradesh. Modi once again
provedhispoliticalacumen
and BJP emerged as a big
political force in Haryana
and Chandigarh
during
1996 assembly elections.
His magical run contin-
ued and he managed to
form BJP government
in
Himachal Pradesh in 1998
under the leadership of
Prem Kumar Dhumal. This
gave a new height to Modi’s
stature at national level
and the BJP appointed him
as the organisational
gen-
eral secretary
.
“Modijiisalwayseagerto
learn new things. If I could
learn computers way back
in 1996, it was the inspira-
tion of Modi ji,” remembers
Manohar Lal Khattar,chief
minister of Haryana.
BJPwasgainingstrength
at national leveland in vari-
ous states. Modi’s political
strategyandorganisational
skills were playing a major
role in party’s emergence.
Just then in May
, 1999, Kar-
gilwarbrokeoutandIndian
Armed Forces gave befit-
ting reply to Pakistan’s in-
vasion. The entire world
witnessed the unique war-
fare of Indian forces, which
won the battle without
crossing the line of control.
Narendra Modi was devas-
tated with the loss of lives
of soldiers and he went to
meet the injured soldiers.
He showed solidarity with
them and praised their
courage and valour.
“A soldier had lost both
his arms in a mines blast.
Modi has gone to meet
him in the hospital.
Modi asked the sol-
dier, it must be pain-
ingbadly
.Thesoldier
replied - it was pain-
ing till last evening.
Now that we have
won back the Tiger
Hills, the
pain has
vanished. Modi was down
with tears with that reply
,”
remembered
Prem Kumar
Dhumal, chief minister,
Himachal Pradesh.
The grand victory in
Kargil war brought back
Vajpayee government
for
the third time in 1999. Modi
was also becoming power-
ful at national level with
the party gaining strength
day by day
. However, in his
home state Gujarat, Modi
was still not that influen-
tial. The party suffered
massivedefeatinlocalbody
election in 2000. In the same
year on Republic Day
, Guja-
rat suffered the worst ever
earthquake resulting into
deaths of 10,000 people.
“The situation was
dreadful specially in
Kutch region. Now if we
look at Bhuj, one can’t im-
agine that the district was
down in shambles post the
earthquake in 2000.
But Modi ji believes in find-
ingopportunityincalamity
.
He practised this key strat-
egy to rebuild and trans-
form the shredded Bhuj
into a modern city,” remi-
nisced Vishnu Pandya, a
senior journalist.
The inaction of the then
Gujarat’s chief minister
Keshubhai Pa-
tel during the relief
work was questioned.
The public also showed
its anger by defeating BJP
in the bypoll of Sabarkan-
tha Lok Sabha and Sabar-
mati Vidhansabha.
There
was unrest in the party
.
On 1st October 2001, Con-
gress leader Madhav Rao
Scindia died in a helicopter
crash. Along with him a
cameraman Gopal Singh
Bisht also lost his life. Nar-
endra Modi was attending
the cremation ceremony of
Bisht when his mobile
phonerang.Theprimemin-
ister Atal Bihari Vajpayee
was on the other line. He
asked Modi to meet him in
the evening. And on that
evening Modi received
marching orders for Guja-
rat to replace chief minis-
ter Keshu Bhai Patel who
had failed miserably in re-
constructionof earthquake
ridden state.
After becoming the
chief minister, the first
lesson Modi learnt was
from his mother Heera
Bai who said “Beta koi
ghoos de to lena mat ( Nev-
er take bribe from anyone).
Four months passed
since Modi was sworn in.
As per the law, he had to be-
come member of assembly
within 6 months. So, in Feb-
ruary 2002, he contested by-
election from Rajkot-II as-
semblyseatandenteredthe
assembly where he reigned
supreme till he got into the
parliament in 2014. For
Modi, who had ensured vic-
tory for several leaders
over last one and half dec-
ades, a win for himself was
just a cakewalk.
Soon after Modi entered
the Gujarat assembly, fol-
lowing Godhra train burn-
ing case which changed the
entire political discourse in
the state. On 27th February
2002, 20 years back, rioters
set afire S-6 coach of Sabar-
mati Express which was
coming from Ayodhya. The
target was lives of karse-
vaks returning from Ayod-
hya. As many as 59 people
lost their lives which trig-
gered communal riots in
various parts of the state.
“Modi requested for po-
licehelpfromvariousstates
including Congress-ruled
states. But no one came up
for help. He also asked for
military support. The next
daymilitarycameintoforce
to control the violence. It’s
purely malicious publicity
that Modi has fanned the
violence,” said Uday Ma-
hurkar, a senior journalist.
It was a big challenge for
Modi to maintain commu-
nal harmony and peace in
Gujarat amid targeted at-
tacks from the opposition.
“The so-called secularists
from across the country ac-
cused Modi for wrong do-
ing and igniting commu-
nal violence in the state.
They did everything to de-
fame Modi. But Modi ji
never lost patience,” said
Vijay Rupani, former chief
minister of Gujarat.
The opposition sharp-
ened their attacks on Modi
and in July 2002, Governor
S S Bhandari dissolved the
Gujarat Assembly on the
recommendatio
n of the
state council of ministers
on Friday paving the way
for early election in the ri-
ot-torn state. The assembly
was dissolved nine months
ahead of its term.
Undeterred by the turn
of events, Narendra Modi
launched Gaurav Yatra
across Gujarat towns to
bring back the glory of Gu-
jarat by winning 127 seats
out of 182 assembly seg-
ments and paving the way
for his oath taking ceremo-
ny at Gandhinagar
Raj
Bhavan as the Chief Min-
ister for the second time.

PM MODI LEADS POLL CAMPAIGN
BLITZKRIEG ACROSS EASTERN UP

Deoria (PTI): Address-

on Sunday, PM Modi
continued his tirade
against rivals, saying
that the “dynasts” want
“money in their lock-
ers, Constitution in
their pocket and the
poor at their feet”.
“Previous govern-

commission. They made

. But we are now
making a defence corri-
dor in Uttar Pradesh,”
Narendra Modi said
during his address.
Talking about crude
oil, he said India doesn’t
have wells of oil and im-
ports it in large
amounts.
“The previous gov-
ernments didn’t focus
on ethanol as fuel,
which can be produced
from sugarcane. We are
developing infrastruc-
ture to produce ethanol
and biogas from cattle
dung. We are also try-
ing to become self-reli-
ant in edible oils. For
this, the government is
buying oil seeds from
farmers,” he said.
IPM Modi said they
were with a party in
2017 and another party
in 2019 and added “those
who cannot stay with
their friends can never
stand with the people of
the state”.
Modi also addressed
a rally in Deoria and a
BJP workers’ meeting
in Varanasi.
Modi alleged that
they shut sugar mills
and didn’t clear dues of
sugarcane farmers.
“Eighteen new medi-

INDIA FAVOURS WORLD
PEACE, SAYS RAJNATH

backdrop of Russia’s

Defence Minister Ra-

vours world peace.
Prime Minister
Narendra Modi’s role
is being appreciated
on the matter. India
is peace-lover. India
has never attacked
any country and nev-
er grabbed land of
other country
.
“We want world
peace and everyone
should accept it,” Ra-
jnath said address-
ing an election rally
here in Bairia.
He said after surgi-
cal and air strike on
Pakistan India’s im-
age changed in the
world.
“The power of
country has in-
creased. World has
got the message that
India is not to be tri-
fled with, he said.
He said soon the
country will become
self reliant in the de-
fence sector and will
become an exporter
of defence equip-
ment instead of be-
ing an importer,
which it is now.
He claimed politi-
cal analysts have
come to the conclu-
sion that BJP was
going to form next
government in the
state and people are
going to write a new
history
.
“Now triple engine
will run in UP with
Modi’s vision, Yogi’s
mission and people’s
support,” he said.
Terming PM nar-
endra Modi as “true

said no one has re-

is going to do it.

“Earlier, when there

Gorakhpur/ Deoria
(PTI): Samajwadi Par-
ty (SP) president Akh-
ilesh Yadav on Sunday
claimed that the people
of UP have decided to
send ‘Babaji’ back to his
‘math’, apparently re-
ferring to CM Yogi.
Yogi, who was a five-
time MP from Gorakh-
pur, is the mahant of
the Gorakhnath Math.
Addressing a rally in
the Chillupar in Gora-
khpur in favour of SP
candidate Vinay Shan-
kar Tiwari, Yadav said,
“Today voting in being

to his ‘math’.”
In Deoria, he said,
“Babaji did not give you

know how to operate it.
He even does not know
how to run a smart
phone. How can a CM
who does not know how
to run a laptop and does
not understand the im-
portance of computers

the state?”
Yadav claimed that
there were no crowds
at BJP’s meetings and
chairs are being
spread out to give the
impression of a large

Lucknow (PTI): Ask-
ing the people to think
about what they are vot-
ing for, Congress leader
P Chidambaram on
Sunday said the Yogi
Adityanath model of
government had made
the state poorer, adding
40 per cent to UP’s debt.
Batting for his party,
Chidambaram said that
the Congress’ slogan
Ladki Hoon Lad Sakti
Hoon’ has added a new
dimension to the goal of
gender equality in elec-
tions.
What are you voting
for? Chidambaram
sought to know from
the people, and said Ad-
ityanath’s model of gov-
ernance was a mix of
authoritarianism, fan-
ning religious hatred,
perpetuating caste en-
mity, police excesses
and gender violence .
“This model has
made the state poorer
and kept a majority of
the people of UP poor, “
he said, adding the
state’s outstanding debt
was Rs 6.62 lakh crore.
Hailing the people of
UP as the most hard-
working, he said, “You
have sent eight PMs to
Delhi and all of them
were honourable peo-
ple. And if Narendra
Modi is added to the
list, he will be the ninth.
Yet, UP is poor, its peo-
ple are poor and on
many economic and so-
cial indicators, the state
is at the bottom.”
Stating that it was a
hard-fought election,
Chidambaram said
there were four key
players, and each had
its own strength and
appeal.
“The Congress has,
after a long interval,
planted its flag in all the
403 constituencies and
has fielded candidates
in all 403 constituen-
cies. It has given a new
dimension to the goal of
gender equality in elec-
tions. Its slogan of Mai
Ladki Hoon, Mai Lad
Sakthi Hoon has
brought new energy to
the campaign,” he said.
Praising Congress
leader Priyanka Gand-
hi Vadra, the former fi-
nance minister said she
had campaigned tire-
lessly throughout the
length and breadth of
the vast state.

OCTOBER, 2001…WHEN VAJPAYEE
ASKED A PERFORMER MODI TO TAKE OVER
AN EARTHQUAKE RIDDEN GUJARAT!
DOWN THE MEMORY LANE… THE MAKING OF PM MODI – PART 5
S
oon after Narendra Modi
left Gujarat and came to
Delhi over the compromise
formula, he was given the
charge of BJP’s national
secretary
. He was also made
incharge of Punjab and
Jammu Kashmir in addi-
tion to Haryana, Chandi-
garh (UT) and Himachal
Pradesh. Modi once again
provedhispoliticalacumen
and BJP emerged as a big
political force in Haryana
and Chandigarh during
1996 assembly elections.
His magical run contin-
ued and he managed to
form BJP government in
Himachal Pradesh in 1998
under the leadership of
Prem Kumar Dhumal. This
gave a new height to Modi’s
stature at national level
and the BJP appointed him
as the organisational gen-
eral secretary
.
“Modijiisalwayseagerto
learn new things. If I could
learn computers way back
in 1996, it was the inspira-
tion of Modi ji,” remembers
Manohar Lal Khattar,chief
minister of Haryana.
BJPwasgainingstrength
at national level and in vari-
ous states. Modi’s political
strategyandorganisational
skills were playing a major
role in party’s emergence.
Just then in May
, 1999, Kar-
gilwarbrokeoutandIndian
Armed Forces gave befit-
ting reply to Pakistan’s in-
vasion. The entire world
witnessed the unique war-
fare of Indian forces, which
won the battle without
crossing the line of control.
Narendra Modi was devas-
tated with the loss of lives
of soldiers and he went to
meet the injured soldiers.
He showed solidarity with
them and praised their
courage and valour.
“A soldier had lost both
his arms in a mines blast.
Modi has gone to meet
him in the hospital.
Modi asked the sol-
dier, it must be pain-
ingbadly
.Thesoldier
replied - it was pain-
ing till last evening.
Now that we have
won back the Tiger
Hills, the
pain has
vanished. Modi was down
with tears with that reply
,”
remembered Prem Kumar
Dhumal, chief minister,
Himachal Pradesh.
The grand victory in
Kargil war brought back
Vajpayee government for
the third time in 1999. Modi
was also becoming power-
ful at national level with
the party gaining strength
day by day
. However, in his
home state Gujarat, Modi
was still not that influen-
tial. The party suffered
massivedefeatinlocalbody
election in 2000. In the same
year on Republic Day
, Guja-
rat suffered the worst ever
earthquake resulting into
deaths of 10,000 people.
“The situation was
dreadful specially in
Kutch region. Now if we
look at Bhuj, one can’t im-
agine that the district was
down in shambles post the
earthquake in 2000.
But Modi ji believes in find-
ingopportunityincalamity
.
He practised this key strat-
egy to rebuild and trans-
form the shredded Bhuj
into a modern city,” remi-
nisced Vishnu Pandya, a
senior journalist.
The inaction of the then
Gujarat’s chief minister
Keshubhai Pa-
tel during the relief
work was questioned.
The public also showed
its anger by defeating BJP
in the bypoll of Sabarkan-
tha Lok Sabha and Sabar-
mati Vidhansabha. There
was unrest in the party
.
On 1st October 2001, Con-
gress leader Madhav Rao
Scindia died in a helicopter
crash. Along with him a
cameraman Gopal Singh
Bisht also lost his life. Nar-
endra Modi was attending
the cremation ceremony of
Bisht when his mobile
phonerang.Theprimemin-
ister Atal Bihari Vajpayee
was on the other line. He
asked Modi to meet him in
the evening. And on that
evening Modi received
marching orders for Guja-
rat to replace chief minis-
ter Keshu Bhai Patel who
had failed miserably in re-
constructionof earthquake
ridden state.
After becoming the
chief minister, the first
lesson Modi learnt was
from his mother Heera
Bai who said “Beta koi
ghoos de to lena mat ( Nev-
er take bribe from anyone).
Four months passed
since Modi was sworn in.
As per the law, he had to be-
come member of assembly
within 6 months. So, in Feb-
ruary 2002, he contested by-
election from Rajkot-II as-
semblyseatandenteredthe
assembly where he reigned
supreme till he got into the
parliament in 2014. For
Modi, who had ensured vic-
tory for several leaders
over last one and half dec-
ades, a win for himself was
just a cakewalk.
Soon after Modi entered
the Gujarat assembly, fol-
lowing Godhra train burn-
ing case which changed the
entire political discourse in
the state. On 27th February
2002, 20 years back, rioters
set afire S-6 coach of Sabar-
mati Express which was
coming from Ayodhya. The
target was lives of karse-
vaks returning from Ayod-
hya. As many as 59 people
lost their lives which trig-
gered communal riots in
various parts of the state.
“Modi requested for po-
licehelpfromvariousstates
including Congress-ruled
states. But no one came up
for help. He also asked for
military support. The next
daymilitarycameintoforce
to control the violence. It’s
purely malicious publicity
that Modi has fanned the
violence,” said Uday Ma-
hurkar, a senior journalist.
It was a big challenge for
Modi to maintain commu-
nal harmony and peace in
Gujarat amid targeted at-
tacks from the opposition.
“The so-called secularists
from across the country ac-
cused Modi for wrong do-
ing and igniting commu-
nal violence in the state.
They did everything to de-
fame Modi. But Modi ji
never lost patience,” said
Vijay Rupani, former chief
minister of Gujarat.
The opposition sharp-
ened their attacks on Modi
and in July 2002, Governor
S S Bhandari dissolved the
Gujarat Assembly on the
recommendation of the
state council of ministers
on Friday paving the way
for early election in the ri-
ot-torn state. The assembly
was dissolved nine months
ahead of its term.
Undeterred by the turn
of events, Narendra Modi
launched Gaurav Yatra
across Gujarat towns to
bring back the glory of Gu-
jarat by winning 127 seats
out of 182 assembly seg-
ments and paving the way
for his oath taking ceremo-
ny at Gandhinagar Raj
Bhavan as the Chief Min-
ister for the second time.

of people who have
taken part is a “six-

New Delhi: Postal bal-
lot is never considered
very important in elec-
toral politics. Rarely
would this have even af-
fected the results. But
suddenly the impor-
tance of postal ballot is
increasing. Anti-BJP
parties contesting the
elections are worried
over postal ballots as
they are casting unveri-
fied doubts on the Elec-
tion Commission as
well as the administra-
tion. That is because
they feel that BJP or a
ruling party can influ-
ence the results with the
help of postal ballot, by
taking advantage of the
system. Keep in mind
that earlier, the right to
vote by postal ballot was
only for the army per-
sonnel-officers and the
employees conducting
elections. Now, people
above 80 years of age
have been allowed to
vote by postal ballot.
Earlier, when the
counting of votes start-
ed, the postal ballots
were counted first and
after that the EVMs
were opened but now
the postal ballots are
counted alongside, till
the counting is over. An-
other change is that
postalballotsweregiven
through Booth Level Of-
ficer (BLO) earlier but
now they are being sent
by post. A worrying
thing which has come
up is that government
servants who vote by
postal ballot have to car-
ry a copy of their iden-
tity card with them to
ensure transparency
but at the same time this
breaches the secrecy of
the vote and a govern-
ment servant who is vot-
ing for the opposition
may feel compromised.
During the first phase
of polling in Uttar
Pradesh, such an inci-
dent happened on at
least one booth in Gha-
ziabad that the votes of
many members of the
Muslim family
, who had
come to cast their votes,
had supposedly already
been cast by postal bal-
lot, while they were not
aware of it.
That's how the oppo-
sition feel that there can
be some play with the
postal ballot, especially
in those seats where the
margin of victory and
defeat will be less.

Lucknow:Theelectoral
strategy of the Bharati-
ya Janata Party has un-
dergone a change in Ut-
tar Pradesh. By its very
nature, BJP does mid-
course correction at the
time of any election.
Four phases of voting
have been completed in
the Uttar Pradesh elec-
tions and before the
fourth phase of polling,
it seems that BJP has
changed its strategy
. Be-
fore the campaigning
for the fourth phase
ended, Prime Minister
Narendra Modi started
asking for votes in his
name. He asked people
in their meetings that
will the people vote for
him? This strategy to
askforvotesinhisname
raises two points to keep
in mind. The first is to
unite the beneficiaries
of the central govern-
ment’s schemes in fa-
vour of the BJP and sec-
ondly to give a message
to the voters of the back-
ward castes.
It seems that the
BJP’s internal assess-
ment is that Yogi Adi-
tyanath’s face may not
able to polarise more
votes at this point and
has reached its limit in
that regard, while even
issue of anti-incum-
bency is also being ob-
served. On the other
hand, Prime Minister
Modi has heard people
say that since they
have eaten Modi’s salt,
then they will not cheat
on him. This means
that the distribution of
ration, salt and oil to
the most backward and
deprived sections of
the society has had the
desired effect and this
is when PM Modi has
started giving a mes-
sage to that voter. By
playing the stake of his
face, he has again
started an attempt to
connect the backward
and most backward
castes closely with the
BJP. How much suc-
cess will be achieved in
this, it cannot be said
right now but BJP has
started a bid to ‘change
the winds’.
BJP eyes the beneficiary and the backward Govt cancels `19K-cr tender for
connecting villages in 16 States
New Delhi (PTI):
State-owned Bharat
Broadband Nigam Ltd
has cancelled a Rs
19,000-crore tender that
was floated for connect-
ing villages across 16
states with an optical
fibre-based high-speed
broadband network,
following the lack of
participation of eligi-
ble bidders.
The project was ap-
proved in June last year
to roll out an optical fi-
bre network under
BharatNet in 16 states
in a public-private part-
nership (PPP) model
with a total expense of
Rs 29,430 crore.
The Centre had ap-
proved a viability gap
fund of Rs 19,041 crore
for the project that
aimed to connect 3.61
lakh villages across 16
states.
The project was di-
vided into nine pack-
ages, and tenders for
each of the packages
were floated separately
.
For each of the nine
tenders, BBNL on Feb-
ruary 8 said the tender
of the corresponding
package “with all its
corrigenda is hereby
cancelled on account of
non-participation by
any bidder”.
An e-mail query sent
to BBNL elicited no re-
sponse.

“A few electronic evi-

them as the yogi. We are

CBI sources has said
that since he had access
to the emails sent to the
yogi, they suspect they
can be the same. How-

Subramanian, who
has been arrested after
questioning, was sent to

VOTE ONLY TO

AIMIM CHIEF TO
VOTERS
In the bastion of Chief Minister
Yogi Adityanath, the AIMIM
Chief Asaduddin Owaisi urged
the people not to vote helplessly
but to vote to strengthen
themselves. Addressing a public
meeting here at Baale ka Maidan
on Sunday Owaisi said “ You
have to choose and make a
decision for your coming
generation so don’t hesitate in
breaking the shackles and come
forward to elect a government
that can work for the all-round
development of weaker sections
including Muslims”. Coming
down heavily on Chief Minister
Yogi Adityanath, he recalled that
when people of this region were
crying for oxygen, Chief Minister
Yogi Adityanath was busy in
Assembly elections of West
Bengal. He also said Adityanath
takes his name several times a
day but he did not take care of
people facing hardships in
earning their livelihood. Owaisi
said that the distribution of
grains worth Rs 600 cannot
change the fate of the people but
a sincere decision of voting for
themselves is vital for
them. Targetting the other
secular parties he said other
party’s Member of Parliament
prefer to skip the debate and
recalled that it is AIMIM that has
strongly opposed the Prime
Minister and BJP government on
various issues.

RAISINGAWARENESSFORENVIRONMENTPROTECTION
Pratapgarh (PTI): As

Gem was equally exhil-

After casting his vote

sapling. “A politician is
one who leads the coun-

who could take us col-

us,” Gem said. Like
Gem, hundreds of vot-

ers, in Pratapgarh
pledged to plant a tree
after casting their vote
through an initiative of
‘Paryavaran Sena’,
aimed at raising aware-
ness for voter turnout
as well as climate

had started working for
environment two de-
cades ago and had been
campaigning to raise
awareness towards pro-
tecting nature and cli-
mate change. “The gov-

he said, adding since
then the outfit, which
has thousands of volun-
teers, has been working
for environment protec-
tion. He recalled how a
former Pratapgarh dis-
trictmagistratewhowas
impressed by his outfit’s

which has now become
part of his identity

the years, Ajay and his
outfit also joined forced

those on elections and

The outfit is running

‘A DEMOCRACY, A NATION THE WORLD
WOULD SURVIVE IF NATURE SURVIVES’
The Paryavaran sainiks’ are going across district,
including villages, to raise awareness for voting,
and telling them how to make the day memorable
for themselves, Ajay said. The Paryavaran Sena
had worked during the 2019 general elections
and the 2017 state assembly elections also, with
a mission to aware people and encourage them
for 100 per cent voting, he said. If more people
vote, it will save the democracy. But a democracy,
a nation and world would only survive if the nature
survives, Ajay said. ‘We conceptualized a method
to link voting with plantation. We coined a slogan
Button Dabaao, Ped lagaao, Loktantra Va Srishti
Bachao’, he said.

dav’s supporters
claimed that he sus-
tained minor injuries
in the incident some

Yadav is contesting

FOR THE 1ST TIME IN NEARLY 3 DECADES
ANOTHER ELECTION DAY
AT ‘VILLAGE OF TWINS’
Prayagraj (PTI): Amit
and Vipin might have
raised some eyebrows
when they cast their
vote at a booth in Mo-
hammadpur Umri vil-
lage here on Sunday.
They have an uncanny
resemblance to each
other. Amit and Vipin
are twins and
Prayagraj’s Moham-
madpur Umri is called
a “village of twins”.
A day before the poll-
ing, PTI met came
across at least 10 twins,
and local people say
there are about 30 such
pairs in the village,
where around 1,000 peo-
ple live. Villagers say,
over the years, several
experts have visited the
village, taking blood
and saliva samples, to
understand the phe-
nomenon. Outsiders
sometimes call the place
a “haunted village”.
Amit says he was pulled
up by security person-
nel in the last elections
when he went to a poll-
ing booth to vote. The
security personnel took
him for his brother Vip-
in, saying he has al-
ready voted, says Amit.
Amit says luckily his
brother and mother
were around, who ex-
plained to the BSF per-
sonnel that they are
twins. Another resident
admits having voted
twice on numerous oc-
casions even though he
was challenged once by
the media. He says they
manage to erase “indel-
ible ink”.
Mohammad Hassan
wasn’t as lucky as his
brother Mohammad Re-
han this time. Hassan
couldn’t vote as his
name was missing in
the voters’ list. Rehan
says several scientists
in the past visited the
village, taking their sa-
liva and blood samples
to understand why so
many twins took birth
here. But till now it is a
mystery, he says. Local
residents rubbish the
claims that their village
is a “haunted one”. The
only thing we can say is
that it is a blessing from
Allah,” Ashar and Ir-
ma’s mother says.

ceived bullet shots in

husband Omprakash
sustained a bullet in-
jury on the back of his
head. He was referred
to a hospital in
Meerut, Senior Super-
intendent of Police
Santosh Kumar Singh
said. Omprakash had
sold his land for Rs
12.5 lakh. Using this
money, he bought a
piece of land else-
where and was spend-
ing the remaining
money on one of his
two sons and daugh-
ters-in-law. This en-
raged the other son

ple, police said quot-

others sustained inju-
ries after a car rammed

Agra: The three-day
Urs of Mughal emperor
Shah Jahan at the Taj
Mahal began on Sun-
day with the ceremony
of Ghusl. On the first
day at two o’clock in the
afternoon the doors of
the cellar under the
main tomb were
opened.
The graves of Shah
Jahan and Mumtaz in
the basement were
coated with sandal-
wood after ghusl.
Flowers were offered.
After this Fatiha was
read. During this, Se-
nior Conservation As-
sistant of Archaeolog-
ical Survey of India
(ASI) Prince Vajpayee,
Rajkumar Kapoor,
Chairman of Urs Com-
mittee Syed Ibrahim
Zaidi, Syed Munaw-
war Ali, Tahiruddin
Tahir, Arif Taimuri
etc. were present.
Tourists were given
free entry to the Taj Ma-
hal from 2 pm on Sun-
day. This allowed tour-
ists to see the tombs of
Shah Jahan and Mum-
taz in the basement be-
low the main dome.
On Sunday, a large
number of tourists
came to see the Taj Ma-
hal. Tourists will get
free entry to the Taj
Mahal from 2 pm on
Mondays and through-
out the day on Tues-
days. On the third day
i.e. on March 1, a color-
ful sheet of cloth sym-
bolizing the harmony
of all religions will be
offered.
Khuddam-e-Ro za
Committee President
Haji Tahiruddin Tahir
told that a colorful
sheet of cloth is being
prepared for ‘Chadar-
poshi’ in Urs. This cha-
dar will be taken to the
Taj Mahal from the Ha-
numan temple located
at the southern gate .
All the preparations
have been done for the
Urs. Corona protocol
will be strictly followed.
ASI superintendent ar-
chaeologist Rajkumar
Patel says that guide-
lines have been issued
regarding Urs.

Lucknow: In the third
phase of the ongoing
polls in UP, Yadav vot-
ers were in an influen-
tial position in deciding
the results of many
seats, now non-Yadav
OBC voters are in a de-
cisive role in the ongo-
ing last phases being
held in Purvanchal. Po-
litical parties took spe-
cial care of these caste
equations while decid-
ing their candidates.
According to demo-
graphic data, of the
nearly 52 per cent OBC
population, around 43
per cent are from
non-Yadav castes. By
making an impact on
the big chunk of these
non-Yadav voters, BJP
has set records of victo-
ry in the 2017 assembly
and 2019 Lok Sabha
elections. In this elec-
tion too, the BJP, follow-
ing this tried-and-tested
formula, fielded 130
non-Yadav candidates,
out of which only four
belong to the Yadav
community. Influential
OBC leaders of the BJP
camp like Deputy CM
Keshav Prasad Maurya,
party state president
Swatantra Dev Singh,
Santosh Gangwar, San-
jeev Balyan, Anil Ra-
jbhar, Mukut Bihari
Verma and Laxmi
Narayan Chaudhary
were given the task of
making inroads among
the OBC voters.
Whereas, Akhilesh
Yadav adopted the same
formula to compete
with the BJP, for this
the party forged alli-
ances with small par-
ties having influence
among non-Yadav OBC
voters. BJP’s old allies
Omprakash Rajbhar,
Swami Prasad Maurya,
Dharam Singh Saini
and Dara Singh Chou-
han were included in
SP camp, at the same
time, SP chief also suc-
ceeded in bringing vet-
eran OBC leaders of
BSP like Lalji Verma,
Ramachal Rajbhar into
his party fold.
Lucknow(PTI): The vi-
tal issue of clean air
and water is missing
from the UP elections
though several cities
here often figure in the
list of the world’s 10
most polluted. Despite
clean water and air be-
ing the mainstay of life,
major political parties,
except for the Samajwa-
di Party, Congress and
the Rashtriya Lok Dal,
have not included the
issue of environmental
protection prominently
in their election mani-
festos.
Even for the parties
that mentioned it, the
concern for environ-
ment remains on paper
as everyone is busy
talking about Jinnah,
Pakistan, vote bank
politics and ‘pariwar-
vad’ to sway voters to
their sides. Akhilesh
Yadav has a degree in
environmental engi-
neering from Australia
but his party manifesto
just has a reference
about climate issue
sans any major an-
nouncement to deal
with the problem.
Even the Congress
has touched on some as-
pects of climate change
in its manifesto, but has
not spoken of any con-
crete initiative.
The issue hasn’t got
much importance in
BJP poll manifesto. The
saffron party has men-
tioned cleaning of the
river Ganga but has not
mentioned anything
about countering cli-
mate change.
Senior state BJP
leader and State Pollu-
tion Control Board
chairman JPS Rathore
told PTI why scientists
have repeatedly ex-
pressed concerns about
poor air quality.“The
issues which are liked
by the public have to be
taken forward. The is-
sue of environmental
protection will become
the public’s issue after
10 years.
Right now, employ-
ment and development
are the main issues for
the people.” Asked why
the BJP is not making
climate change an issue
of political discourse
despite being a major
political party, Rathore
said, “We are serious
about it and are doing
concrete work at the
ground level. But right
now it is for the people.
It won’t become an is-
sue as other things are
more necessary for
them at the moment.”
Significantly, in the Air
Quality Index, various
cities of UP are still on
the top in terms of pol-
lution. Among these,
Lucknow and Ghazia-
bad are prominent.

Sanjar pur(PTI):
Once known as the
birthplace of literary
giants such as Shibli
Nomani, Ayodhya
Singh Upadhyay
‘Hariaudh’ and Kaifi
Azmi, Azamgarh is
now grappling with
the “terror hub” tag
following the 2008
Ahmedabad serial
bomb blasts case ver-
dict with its residents
lamenting that the
stigma has stunted
growth prospects of
the youth.
Residents of San-
jarpur and Sarai
Meer villages of
Azamgarh slam label-
ling of the district by
some quarters as be-
ing a breeding ground
of terrorists and say
that politicians
“coined terms like
terror factory” for po-
litical gain. The ‘ter-
ror link’ of Azamgarh
has also made it to the
UP assembly election
campaign discourse
with Yogi accusing
the Samajwadi party
govt of “protecting
terrorists” during its
tenure.
He has alleged that
the father of one of
those convicts hav-
ing a connection
with Azamgarh is an
active Samajwadi
Party worker. Abdul
Baqi, an agricultur-
ist from Sanjarpur
village, said associat-
ing of Azamgarh
with terrorism loose-
ly over the years had
defamed it and made
it difficult for young-
sters to get a job else-
where.
“There are already
so many biases and
now with all this ter-
ror talk after the
blasts case verdict, it
is going to get
almost impossible
for children from our
village to get a job in
places like Delhi. Pol-
iticians use such la-
bels of terrorism to
score political points,
but in the end it just
defames and harms
prospects of scores
of innocents,” Baqi
told.
Echoing similar
sentiments, Shah
Alam, who has a shop
of biscuits and baked
items, also lamented
that the terror tag
had damaged the rep-
utation of many from
the district and ham-
pered job prospects.
Mau(PTI): Derided by

dav’s previous rule in
UP
, jailed don-politician
Mukhtar Ansari is out
of the poll fray this time
and his son is instead
contesting as the oppo-
sition alliance candi-
date in his Mau seat.
Union Home Minis-
ter Amit Shah and oth-
er BJP leaders have
been taking Mukhtar
Ansari’s name to attack
the Samajwadi Party on
the issue of law and or-
der and how the Yogi
govt ran bulldozers on
his properties.
Mukhtar Ansari’s
30-year-old son Abbas
Ansari has been fielded
in the election by the
SP’s ally SBSP of Om
Prakash Rajbhar as the
coalition nominee in
the seat, where voting
will take place in the
seventh and last phase
on March 7.
Om Prakash Rajbhar
had earlier declared
Mukhtar Ansari as his
party’s candidate in the
seat, but when the pro-
cess of nomination be-
gan in the seventh
phase, Abbas Ansari
filed his nomination pa-
pers instead.
The BJP and BSP
candidates have been
making an issue out of
Mukhtar Ansari’s crim-
inal image and have ap-
pealed to people to free
Mau from the mafia.
Abbas quotes data
from the NCRB to claim
that there has been a
huge increase in the
crime rate in Uttar
Pradesh in the last five
years. Though he is the
face, the force behind
the son in the polls re-
mains the father.

  • 1. Priority of Akhilesh was walls of kabristan, not development of UP: Yogi Adityanath Gor akhpur(ANI): Slamming the Sama- jwadi Party (SP), Chief Minister Yogi Adity- anath on Sunday said the development of the state was never the pri- ority of party chief Akhilesh Yadav, who was more interested in building walls of ‘ka- bristan’ (graveyards). Addressing a public rally at Caimpiyarganj Assembly constituency in Gorakhpur, the Chief Minister said, “When I asked an SP leader to list development works done under his party , he replied that infrastruc- ture, medical facilities, roads were not their priority. He said the party’s agenda was to get ‘Kabristan’ bounda- ry walls made.” Continuing his at- tack on the SP leader, Adityanath said, “Ittar Wale Mitra’ accumu- lated the money in their lockers, focused on ‘Sabka Saath Par Sirf Saifai Ka Vikas’...” He added, “If the SP government was in power, then COVID-19 vaccines would have been sold in markets and no poor person would have got it. But the BJP ensured that no one was deprived of it.” Polling for the fifth phase of the ongoing Assembly polls was held on Sunday in Ayo- dhya, Sultanpur, Chi- trakoot, Pratapgarh, Kaushambi, Prayagraj, Barabaki, Bahraich, Shrawasti, Gonda, Am- ethi, and Raebareli dis- tricts. As many as 692 candidates are in the fray in the fifth phase whose political fate will be decided by around 2.24 crore electorate. Addressing ‘BJP’s Booth Vijay Samelan’ in Varanasi, the Prime Minister said, “I do not like to criticise anyone personally, but when I was publicly wished to die in Kashi, I really felt very happy, my heart felt very relaxed. I felt that even my staunch opponents were seeing how much love the people of Kashi had for me,” PM Modi’s remarks come on a statement by the SP chief after the inau- guration of the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor in December last year. “Bahut achhi baat hai. Ek Maheena na- hin, do mahina, teen mahina wahin rahein. Woh jagah rahene wali hai. Aakhri samay par vaheen raha jata hai, Banaras mein (It is a very good thing. Not just one month. He should stay there for two months, three months. That’s the place to stay. When the end nears, that’s where one stays - in Banaras),” Yadav had said. PM Modi further said that the party has given him the meritori- ous task of serving Kashi, sitting at the feet of Mahadev and Mother Ganga. “The workers of BJP work for the country. For all of us, it has always been party above indi- vidual and country above party. We win elections but at the same time we win the hearts of the people,” he said. Talking about Vara- nasi, he said that the path of development on which the city is go- ing forward will open the way for the country to be free from poverty and crime. The Prime Minister also offered prayers at the Kashi Vishwanath temple in Varanasi. He was also made incharge of Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir in addi- tion to Haryana, Chandi- garh (UT) and Himachal Pradesh. Modi once again provedhispoliticalacumen and BJP emerged as a big political force in Haryana and Chandigarh during 1996 assembly elections. His magical run contin- ued and he managed to form BJP government in Himachal Pradesh in 1998 under the leadership of Prem Kumar Dhumal. This gave a new height to Modi’s stature at national level and the BJP appointed him as the organisational gen- eral secretary . “Modijiisalwayseagerto learn new things. If I could learn computers way back in 1996, it was the inspira- tion of Modi ji,” remembers Manohar Lal Khattar, chief minister of Haryana. BJPwasgainingstrength at national leveland in vari- ous states. Modi’s political strategyandorganisational skills were playing a major role in party’s emergence. Just then in May , 1999, Kar- gilwarbrokeoutandIndian Armed Forces gave befit- ting reply to Pakistan’s in- vasion. The entire world witnessed the unique war- fare of Indian forces, which won the battle without crossing the line of control. Narendra Modi was devas- tated with the loss of lives of soldiers and he went to meet the injured soldiers. He showed solidarity with them and praised their courage and valour. “A soldier had lost both his arms in a mines blast. Modi has gone to meet him in the hospital. Modi asked the sol- dier, it must be pain- ingbadly .Thesoldier replied - it was pain- ing till last evening. Now that we have won back the Tiger Hills, the pain has vanished. Modi was down with tears with that reply ,” remembered Prem Kumar Dhumal, chief minister, Himachal Pradesh. The grand victory in Kargil war brought back Vajpayee government for the third time in 1999. Modi was also becoming power- ful at national level with the party gaining strength day by day . However, in his home state Gujarat, Modi was still not that influen- tial. The party suffered massivedefeatinlocalbody election in 2000. In the same year on Republic Day , Guja- rat suffered the worst ever earthquake resulting into deaths of 10,000 people. “The situation was dreadful specially in Kutch region. Now if we look at Bhuj, one can’t im- agine that the district was down in shambles post the earthquake in 2000. But Modi ji believes in find- ingopportunityincalamity . He practised this key strat- egy to rebuild and trans- form the shredded Bhuj into a modern city,” remi- nisced Vishnu Pandya, a senior journalist. The inaction of the then Gujarat’s chief minister Keshubhai Pa- tel during the relief work was questioned. The public also showed its anger by defeating BJP in the bypoll of Sabarkan- tha Lok Sabha and Sabar- mati Vidhansabha. There was unrest in the party . On 1st October 2001, Con- gress leader Madhav Rao Scindia died in a helicopter crash. Along with him a cameraman Gopal Singh Bisht also lost his life. Nar- endra Modi was attending the cremation ceremony of Bisht when his mobile phonerang.Theprimemin- ister Atal Bihari Vajpayee was on the other line. He asked Modi to meet him in the evening. And on that evening Modi received marching orders for Guja- rat to replace chief minis- ter Keshu Bhai Patel who had failed miserably in re- constructionof earthquake ridden state. After becoming the chief minister, the first lesson Modi learnt was from his mother Heera Bai who said “Beta koi ghoos de to lena mat ( Nev- er take bribe from anyone). Four months passed since Modi was sworn in. As per the law, he had to be- come member of assembly within 6 months. So, in Feb- ruary 2002, he contested by- election from Rajkot-II as- semblyseatandenteredthe assembly where he reigned supreme till he got into the parliament in 2014. For Modi, who had ensured vic- tory for several leaders over last one and half dec- ades, a win for himself was just a cakewalk. Soon after Modi entered the Gujarat assembly, fol- lowing Godhra train burn- ing case which changed the entire political discourse in the state. On 27th February 2002, 20 years back, rioters set afire S-6 coach of Sabar- mati Express which was coming from Ayodhya. The target was lives of karse- vaks returning from Ayod- hya. As many as 59 people lost their lives which trig- gered communal riots in various parts of the state. “Modi requested for po- licehelpfromvariousstates including Congress-ruled states. But no one came up for help. He also asked for military support. The next daymilitarycameintoforce to control the violence. It’s purely malicious publicity that Modi has fanned the violence,” said Uday Ma- hurkar, a senior journalist. It was a big challenge for Modi to maintain commu- nal harmony and peace in Gujarat amid targeted at- tacks from the opposition. “The so-called secularists from across the country ac- cused Modi for wrong do- ing and igniting commu- nal violence in the state. They did everything to de- fame Modi. But Modi ji never lost patience,” said Vijay Rupani, former chief minister of Gujarat. The opposition sharp- ened their attacks on Modi and in July 2002, Governor S S Bhandari dissolved the Gujarat Assembly on the recommendatio n of the state council of ministers on Friday paving the way for early election in the ri- ot-torn state. The assembly was dissolved nine months ahead of its term. Undeterred by the turn of events, Narendra Modi launched Gaurav Yatra across Gujarat towns to bring back the glory of Gu- jarat by winning 127 seats out of 182 assembly seg- ments and paving the way for his oath taking ceremo- ny at Gandhinagar Raj Bhavan as the Chief Min- ister for the second time. DOWN THE MEMORY LANE… THE MAKING OF PM MODI – PART 5 S oon after Narendra Modi left Gujarat and came to Delhi over the compromise formula, he was given the charge of BJP’s national secretary . He was also made incharge of Punjab and Jammu Kashmir in addi- tion to Haryana, Chandi- garh (UT) and Himachal Pradesh. BJPwasgainingstrength at national level and in vari- ous states. The opposition sharp- ened their attacks on Modi and in July 2002, Governor S S Bhandari dissolved the Gujarat Assembly on the recommendation of the state council of ministers on Friday paving the way for early election in the ri- ot-torn state. Train and under- ground service was interrupted in some parts of the German capital as thousands made their way to the Brandenburg Gate in central Berlin, near the Russian embassy. The crowd of pro- testers bearing signs reading: “Stop the War”, “Putin’s last war” and “We stand with Ukraine” along with Ukrainian and European Union flags, extended from the Vic- tory Column in the heart of the capital. The protest comes as Russia’s attack on Ukraine entered its fourth day, triggering three sanctions pack- age from Germany and its Western allies and pushing Berlin to shift its decades-long policy of not exporting arms to conflict zones. “Ukrainians: You’re welcome here!” shout- ed one of the speakers as the crowd cheered. Senior Cong leaders meet Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka New Delhi (ANI): Sen- ior Congress leaders held a meeting on Sun- day where they dis- cussed the ongoing as- sembly elections as well the party’s strate- gy regarding poll re- sults to be announced on March 10. The meeting was at- tended by Rahul Gan- dhi, Priyanka Gandhi, Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot, Chhatisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel, and MP KC Venugopal. After the meeting, Chhatisgarh CM Bhu- pesh Baghel revealed that the ongoing assem- bly elections of the five states were discussed in the meeting. “Had a meeting with KC Venugopal. Strategy regarding re- sults that will be an- nounced on 10th March was also discussed,” Baghel said, as quoted by media. Rajasthan govern- ment’s decision to re- vert to OPS has some- how become an election issue as well. Last week, Priyanka Gandhi hailed the Rajasthan govern- ment’s decision. Rajya Sabha elections are also around and with veteran leaders of Congress like Kapil Sibal and P Chidambar- am along with many other leaders will be fin- ishing their term in ei- ther June or July this year, it is believed that Congress party also dis- cussed the vacant seats in the Rajya Sabha. Kolkata (PTI): Cases of violence and mal- practices marred elec- tions to 107 municipali- ties across West Bengal on Sunday even as a voter turnout of around 76.51 per cent was re- corded till 5 PM, elec- tion officials said. Elections were scheduled in 108 mu- nicipalities. However, with TMC winning one civic body uncontested in Dinhata in Coochbe- har district, elections were held in 107 towns Sunday, a State Elec- tion Commission offi- cial said. The opposition BJP, which dubbed the poll process as a “mockery of democracy” has called a 12-hour shut- down on Monday to pro- test the violence. The TMC has dubbed the al- legations as baseless and said opposition par- ties are trying to find excuses sensing defeat. Till 5 PM, 76.51 per cent of 95.6 lakh voters exercised their fran- chise in more than 2,000 wards amid tight security and strict ad- herence to COVID-19 guidelines. India is peace- lover. India has never attacked any country and never grabbed land of other country . “Now triple engine will run in the state with PM Modi’s vision, Yogi’s mission and peo- ple’s support,” he said. Terming PM Modi as “true samajwadi’, Ra- jnath Singh said no one has repeated the gov- ernment in UP but BJP is going to do it. “We want world peace and everyone should ac- cept it,” Rajnath Singh said addressing an elec- tion rally here in Bairia. Sharat K Verma New Delhi: Postal bal- lot is never considered very important in elec- toral politics. Rarely would this have even af- fected the results. But suddenly the impor- tance of postal ballot is increasing. Anti-BJP parties contesting the elections are worried over postal ballots as they are casting unveri- fied doubts on the Elec- tion Commission as well as the administra- tion. That is because they feel that BJP or a ruling party can influ- ence the results with the help of postal ballot, by taking advantage of the system. Keep in mind that earlier, the right to vote by postal ballot was only for the army per- sonnel-officers and the employees conducting elections. Now, people above 80 years of age have been allowed to vote by postal ballot. Earlier, when the counting of votes start- ed, the postal ballots were counted first and after that the EVMs were opened but now the postal ballots are counted alongside, till the counting is over. An- other change is that postalballotsweregiven through Booth Level Of- ficer (BLO) earlier but now they are being sent by post. A worrying thing which has come up is that government servants who vote by postal ballot have to car- ry a copy of their iden- tity card with them to ensure transparency but at the same time this breaches the secrecy of the vote and a govern- ment servant who is vot- ing for the opposition may feel compromised. During the first phase of polling in Uttar Pradesh, such an inci- dent happened on at least one booth in Gha- ziabad that the votes of many members of the Muslim family , who had come to cast their votes, had supposedly already been cast by postal bal- lot, while they were not aware of it. That's how the oppo- sition feel that there can be some play with the postal ballot, especially in those seats where the margin of victory and defeat will be less. Oppositionpartiesfearpostalballots! TheDrugsControl- ler General Of India (DCGI) had approved Covovax for restrict- ed use in emergency situations in adults on December 28. The vaccine is yet to be included in the coun- try’s inoculation pro- gramme. By its very nature, BJP does mid- course correction at the time of any election. Four phases of voting have been completed in the Uttar Pradesh elec- tions and before the fourth phase of polling, it seems that BJP has changed its strategy . Be- fore the campaigning for the fourth phase ended, Prime Minister Narendra Modi started asking for votes in his name. He asked people in their meetings that will the people vote for him? This strategy to askforvotesinhisname raises two points to keep in mind. The first is to unite the beneficiaries of the central govern- ment’s schemes in fa- vour of the BJP and sec- ondly to give a message to the voters of the back- ward castes. It seems that the BJP’s internal assess- ment is that Yogi Adi- tyanath’s face may not able to polarise more votes at this point and has reached its limit in that regard, while even issue of anti-incum- bency is also being ob- served. On the other hand, Prime Minister Modi has heard people say that since they have eaten Modi’s salt, then they will not cheat on him. This means that the distribution of ration, salt and oil to the most backward and deprived sections of the society has had the desired effect and this is when PM Modi has started giving a mes- sage to that voter. By playing the stake of his face, he has again started an attempt to connect the backward and most backward castes closely with the BJP. How much suc- cess will be achieved in this, it cannot be said right now but BJP has started a bid to ‘change the winds’. BJP eyes the beneficiary and the backward Govt cancels `19K-cr tender for connecting villages in 16 States New Delhi (PTI): State-owned Bharat Broadband Nigam Ltd has cancelled a Rs 19,000-crore tender that was floated for connect- ing villages across 16 states with an optical fibre-based high-speed broadband network, following the lack of participation of eligi- ble bidders. The project was ap- proved in June last year to roll out an optical fi- bre network under BharatNet in 16 states in a public-private part- nership (PPP) model with a total expense of Rs 29,430 crore. The Centre had ap- proved a viability gap fund of Rs 19,041 crore for the project that aimed to connect 3.61 lakh villages across 16 states. The project was di- vided into nine pack- ages, and tenders for each of the packages were floated separately . For each of the nine tenders, BBNL on Feb- ruary 8 said the tender of the corresponding package “with all its corrigenda is hereby cancelled on account of non-participation by any bidder”. An e-mail query sent to BBNL elicited no re- sponse. ‘In the Army too, daughters are now taking responsibilities in new and bigger roles’ FROM PARLIAMENT TO PANCHAYAT New Delhi (PTI):Prime MinisterNarendraModi on Sunday said that women in India are reaching new heights in different fields and they are dispelling old myths. This is the gift of science to humani- ty,” he said in his 86th episode of the month- ly radio address of ‘Mann Ki Baat’. Talking about the ‘National Science Day’ on February 28, he said that this day is also known for the dis- covery of the Raman Effect. “Along with CV Raman ji, I pay my re- spectful tribute to all the scientists who have contributed sig- nificantly in enriching our scientific jour- ney,” he said. The major defence deal was announced under the previous Trump administration during the visit of Prime Minister Naren- dra Modi to the White House in 2017. Thereaf- ter, the two countries have intensified the dis- cussions and increased the number of such drones to be sold to In- dia from 10 to 30 - 10 each for navy, air force and army . Governmental sourc- es told media that the Predator/MQ9B acqui- sition program of 30 aircraft is at an ad- vanced stage of discus- sion between the Indian and US governments. Addressing a public meeting here at Baale ka Maidan on Sunday Owaisi said “ You have to choose and make a decision for your coming generation so don’t hesitate in breaking the shackles and come forward to elect a government that can work for the all-round development of weaker sections including Muslims”. Coming down heavily on Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, he recalled that when people of this region were crying for oxygen, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath was busy in Assembly elections of West Bengal. He also said Adityanath takes his name several times a day but he did not take care of people facing hardships in earning their livelihood. Owaisi said that the distribution of grains worth Rs 600 cannot change the fate of the people but a sincere decision of voting for themselves is vital for them. Targetting the other secular parties he said other party’s Member of Parliament prefer to skip the debate and recalled that it is AIMIM that has strongly opposed the Prime Minister and BJP government on various issues. —Qazi Abdur Rahman RAISINGAWARENESSFORENVIRONMENTPROTECTION Pratapgarh (PTI): As the fifth round of as- sembly polls was held in Uttar Pradesh on Sunday, it was a day of double excitement for 18-year-old Gem Mish- ra, who lives with his family in a quaint neighbourhood of Prat- apgarh district. As ex- cited as he was for be- ing a first-time voter, Gem was equally exhil- arated about becoming part of ‘Green Voting’ -- a plantation drive conducted on the poll- ing day by a local envi- ronment protection group. “Loktantra maz- boot karna hai aur sri- shti bhi (We have to strengthen the democ- racy and the nature, too), Gem, said a sec- ond-year B.Sc student at Babu Sant Baksh College in Lilapur. After casting his vote in the morning in the Raniganj assembly con- stituency, the first-time voter said he was very excited as he rushed home to plant a guava sapling. “A politician is one who leads the coun- try. Their role is signif- icant and we need to elect the right leader who could take us col- lectively forward, guide us,” Gem said. Like Gem, hundreds of vot- ers, including first-tim- ers, in Pratapgarh pledged to plant a tree after casting their vote through an initiative of ‘Paryavaran Sena’, aimed at raising aware- ness for voter turnout as well as climate change. Ajay Kumar Ti- wari alias Ajay Kranti- kaari’, the chief of Pa- ryavaran Sena, said he had started working for environment two de- cades ago and had been campaigning to raise awareness towards pro- tecting nature and cli- mate change. “The gov- ernment does what it has to do but we know the nature would be de- stroyed if people do not wake up to the situa- tion, said the 45-year-old social worker lawyer. “There are several types of sena’ in the country . The sena’ for protecting the country is thereof coursebutsever- al had come up for politi- cal activities in recent years. It struck me then about forming a sena’ that would protect the nature, he said. The Pa- ryavaran Sena was formedonAugust9,2002, he said, adding since then the outfit, which has thousands of volun- teers, has been working for environment protec- tion. He recalled how a former Pratapgarh dis- trictmagistratewhowas impressed by his outfit’s work had called him Ajay Krantikaari (revo- lutionary), a moniker which has now become part of his identity . Over the years, Ajay and his outfit also joined forced with the district admin- istration for various so- cialcampaignsincluding those on elections and voting. The outfit is running the Green Voting’ cam- paign, which aims at raisingawarenessforen- vironment protection among people as well about the significance of voting in a democracy . ‘Green Voting’ - Combining votes and plants to save democracy and nature in the poll-bound state ‘Green Voting’ is a plantation drive conducted on the polling day by a local environment protection group. ‘A DEMOCRACY, A NATION THE WORLD WOULD SURVIVE IF NATURE SURVIVES’ The Paryavaran sainiks’ are going across district, including villages, to raise awareness for voting, and telling them how to make the day memorable for themselves, Ajay said. The Paryavaran Sena had worked during the 2019 general elections and the 2017 state assembly elections also, with a mission to aware people and encourage them for 100 per cent voting, he said. If more people vote, it will save the democracy. But a democracy, a nation and world would only survive if the nature survives, Ajay said. ‘We conceptualized a method to link voting with plantation. We coined a slogan Button Dabaao, Ped lagaao, Loktantra Va Srishti Bachao’, he said. Ya- dav’s supporters claimed that he sus- tained minor injuries in the incident some vehicles were damaged. Yadav is contesting from Kunda as a SP can- didate against Jansatta Dal candidate Raghuraj Pratap Singh alias Raja Bhaiya. Yadav’s security personnel saved him, he said, adding a probe is underway.Voting is un- derway in Pratapgarh since 7 am and will con- tinue till 6 pm. FOR THE 1ST TIME IN NEARLY 3 DECADES ANOTHER ELECTION DAY AT ‘VILLAGE OF TWINS’ Prayagraj (PTI): Amit and Vipin might have raised some eyebrows when they cast their vote at a booth in Mo- hammadpur Umri vil- lage here on Sunday. They have an uncanny resemblance to each other. Amit and Vipin are twins and Prayagraj’s Moham- madpur Umri is called a “village of twins”. A day before the poll- ing, PTI met came across at least 10 twins, and local people say there are about 30 such pairs in the village, where around 1,000 peo- ple live. Villagers say, over the years, several experts have visited the village, taking blood and saliva samples, to understand the phe- nomenon. Outsiders sometimes call the place a “haunted village”. Amit says he was pulled up by security person- nel in the last elections when he went to a poll- ing booth to vote. The security personnel took him for his brother Vip- in, saying he has al- ready voted, says Amit. Amit says luckily his brother and mother were around, who ex- plained to the BSF per- sonnel that they are twins. Another resident admits having voted twice on numerous oc- casions even though he was challenged once by the media. He says they manage to erase “indel- ible ink”. Mohammad Hassan wasn’t as lucky as his brother Mohammad Re- han this time. Hassan couldn’t vote as his name was missing in the voters’ list. Rehan says several scientists in the past visited the village, taking their sa- liva and blood samples to understand why so many twins took birth here. But till now it is a mystery, he says. Local residents rubbish the claims that their village is a “haunted one”. The only thing we can say is that it is a blessing from Allah,” Ashar and Ir- ma’s mother says. 30-year-old twins Vipin Kumar and Amit Kumar show their fingers marked with indelible ink after casting vote in Prayagraj on Sunday. On the first day at two o’clock in the afternoon the doors of the cellar under the main tomb were opened. The graves of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz in the basement were coated with sandal- wood after ghusl. Flowers were offered. After this Fatiha was read. During this, Se- nior Conservation As- sistant of Archaeolog- ical Survey of India (ASI) Prince Vajpayee, Rajkumar Kapoor, Chairman of Urs Com- mittee Syed Ibrahim Zaidi, Syed Munaw- war Ali, Tahiruddin Tahir, Arif Taimuri etc. were present. Tourists were given free entry to the Taj Ma- hal from 2 pm on Sun- day. This allowed tour- ists to see the tombs of Shah Jahan and Mum- taz in the basement be- low the main dome. On Sunday, a large number of tourists came to see the Taj Ma- hal. Tourists will get free entry to the Taj Mahal from 2 pm on Mondays and through- out the day on Tues- days. On the third day i.e. on March 1, a color- ful sheet of cloth sym- bolizing the harmony of all religions will be offered. Khuddam-e-Ro za Committee President Haji Tahiruddin Tahir told that a colorful sheet of cloth is being prepared for ‘Chadar- poshi’ in Urs. This cha- dar will be taken to the Taj Mahal from the Ha- numan temple located at the southern gate . All the preparations have been done for the Urs. Corona protocol will be strictly followed. ASI superintendent ar- chaeologist Rajkumar Patel says that guide- lines have been issued regarding Urs. Gyanendra Kumar Shukla Lucknow: In the third phase of the ongoing polls in UP, Yadav vot- ers were in an influen- tial position in deciding the results of many seats, now non-Yadav OBC voters are in a de- cisive role in the ongo- ing last phases being held in Purvanchal. Po- litical parties took spe- cial care of these caste equations while decid- ing their candidates. According to demo- graphic data, of the nearly 52 per cent OBC population, around 43 per cent are from non-Yadav castes. By making an impact on the big chunk of these non-Yadav voters, BJP has set records of victo- ry in the 2017 assembly and 2019 Lok Sabha elections. In this elec- tion too, the BJP, follow- ing this tried-and-tested formula, fielded 130 non-Yadav candidates, out of which only four belong to the Yadav community. Influential OBC leaders of the BJP camp like Deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya, party state president Swatantra Dev Singh, Santosh Gangwar, San- jeev Balyan, Anil Ra- jbhar, Mukut Bihari Verma and Laxmi Narayan Chaudhary were given the task of making inroads among the OBC voters. Whereas, Akhilesh Yadav adopted the same formula to compete with the BJP, for this the party forged alli- ances with small par- ties having influence among non-Yadav OBC voters. BJP’s old allies Omprakash Rajbhar, Swami Prasad Maurya, Dharam Singh Saini and Dara Singh Chou- han were included in SP camp, at the same time, SP chief also suc- ceeded in bringing vet- eran OBC leaders of BSP like Lalji Verma, Ramachal Rajbhar into his party fold. Lucknow(PTI): The vi- tal issue of clean air and water is missing from the UP elections though several cities here often figure in the list of the world’s 10 most polluted. Despite clean water and air be- ing the mainstay of life, major political parties, except for the Samajwa- di Party, Congress and the Rashtriya Lok Dal, have not included the issue of environmental protection prominently in their election mani- festos. Even for the parties that mentioned it, the concern for environ- ment remains on paper as everyone is busy talking about Jinnah, Pakistan, vote bank politics and ‘pariwar- vad’ to sway voters to their sides. Akhilesh Yadav has a degree in environmental engi- neering from Australia but his party manifesto just has a reference about climate issue sans any major an- nouncement to deal with the problem. Even the Congress has touched on some as- pects of climate change in its manifesto, but has not spoken of any con- crete initiative. The issue hasn’t got much importance in BJP poll manifesto. The saffron party has men- tioned cleaning of the river Ganga but has not mentioned anything about countering cli- mate change. Senior state BJP leader and State Pollu- tion Control Board chairman JPS Rathore told PTI why scientists have repeatedly ex- pressed concerns about poor air quality.“The issues which are liked by the public have to be taken forward. The is- sue of environmental protection will become the public’s issue after 10 years. Right now, employ- ment and development are the main issues for the people.” Asked why the BJP is not making climate change an issue of political discourse despite being a major political party, Rathore said, “We are serious about it and are doing concrete work at the ground level. But right now it is for the people. It won’t become an is- sue as other things are more necessary for them at the moment.” Significantly, in the Air Quality Index, various cities of UP are still on the top in terms of pol- lution. Among these, Lucknow and Ghazia- bad are prominent. Residents of San- jarpur and Sarai Meer villages of Azamgarh slam label- ling of the district by some quarters as be- ing a breeding ground of terrorists and say that politicians “coined terms like terror factory” for po- litical gain. The ‘ter- ror link’ of Azamgarh has also made it to the UP assembly election campaign discourse with Yogi accusing the Samajwadi party govt of “protecting terrorists” during its tenure. He has alleged that the father of one of those convicts hav- ing a connection with Azamgarh is an active Samajwadi Party worker. Abdul Baqi, an agricultur- ist from Sanjarpur village, said associat- ing of Azamgarh with terrorism loose- ly over the years had defamed it and made it difficult for young- sters to get a job else- where. “There are already so many biases and now with all this ter- ror talk after the blasts case verdict, it is going to get almost impossible for children from our village to get a job in places like Delhi. Pol- iticians use such la- bels of terrorism to score political points, but in the end it just defames and harms prospects of scores of innocents,” Baqi told. Echoing similar sentiments, Shah Alam, who has a shop of biscuits and baked items, also lamented that the terror tag had damaged the rep- utation of many from the district and ham- pered job prospects. Mau(PTI): Derided by the BJP as a mascot of the criminal-and-mafia raj during Akhilesh Ya- dav’s previous rule in UP , jailed don-politician Mukhtar Ansari is out of the poll fray this time and his son is instead contesting as the oppo- sition alliance candi- date in his Mau seat. Union Home Minis- ter Amit Shah and oth- er BJP leaders have been taking Mukhtar Ansari’s name to attack the Samajwadi Party on the issue of law and or- der and how the Yogi govt ran bulldozers on his properties. Mukhtar Ansari’s 30-year-old son Abbas Ansari has been fielded in the election by the SP’s ally SBSP of Om Prakash Rajbhar as the coalition nominee in the seat, where voting will take place in the seventh and last phase on March 7. Om Prakash Rajbhar had earlier declared Mukhtar Ansari as his party’s candidate in the seat, but when the pro- cess of nomination be- gan in the seventh phase, Abbas Ansari filed his nomination pa- pers instead. The BJP and BSP candidates have been making an issue out of Mukhtar Ansari’s crim- inal image and have ap- pealed to people to free Mau from the mafia. Abbas quotes data from the NCRB to claim that there has been a huge increase in the crime rate in Uttar Pradesh in the last five years.
