1 TB is a serious infectious disease that affects millions of people
worldwide, causing significant illness and death. World TB Day
provides an opportunity to educate people about the disease, its
symptoms, and how to prevent and treat it.

2 TB is an infectious disease caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium
tuberculosis.
It primarily affects the lungs, but can also affect other parts of the body.
TB is spread through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes.
Common symptoms include coughing, fever, weight loss, and fatigue.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), TB is one of the top
10 causes of death worldwide.

600,000 cases of drug-resistant TB reported worldwide in 2020.
TB is also often associated with poverty and social determinants of health, which
can make it difficult to address.
Funding for TB control efforts is inadequate, with a funding gap of $1.3 billion for
TB research and development in 2020.
Initiatives and collaborations aimed at addressing these challenges include the
Stop TB Partnership, the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and
Malaria, and the World Health Organization's End TB Strategy.
