‘If such politics goes on, who can tell what will happen in 2 months?’
First India Bureau
Aurangabad: Union
minister and Bharati-
ya Janata Party (BJP)
leader Raosaheb Danve
has invoked the mid-
term collapse of the
Maha Vikas Aghadi
(MVA) government to
say no one knows what
will happen after two
months if “such poli-
tics” continues.
Addressing a gather-
ing in Kannad town in
Aurangabad district,
the BJP MP also spoke
about the changed po-
litical position of the
Uddhav Thackeray-led
Shiv Sena following the
2019 Assembly polls.
“No one thought the
MVA government,
which had completed
two-and-a-half years in
office, would fall. But
such magic happened
that the government
fell in a night. If such
politics is going on who
can guess what will
happen after two
months?” he asked.
Danve said the re-
sults of the 2019 Assem-
bly elections made the
Shiv Sena realize that
the next government
could not be formed
without them. “They
said all options were
open for the party and
broke ties with their old
ally BJP
,” he added.
MAHARASHTRA POLITICAL CLIME
Mumbai: Many leaders of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance have
indicated that the Maharashtra government headed by Chief Minister
Eknath Shinde and his deputy Devendra Fadnavis will fall soon, paving
the way for mid-term elections in Maharashtra. Now,
claiming that “Danve sometimes speaks the truth”
Rajya Sabha MP and leader of the Uddhav-led
Sena, Sanjay Raut has added fuel to rumours
of approaching political turmoil in the state.
“Raosaheb Danve sometimes speaks the truth.
Anything can happen after two months. I have
complete knowledge and 100% certainty that this
government will fall,” Raut said. Interestingly, the
word in political circles is that the second
phase of cabinet expansions—slated
to occur in the next few days—will
leave several leaders disgruntled.

Meanwhile, the Con-
gress’s Aurangabad city

an agitation at Kranti
Chowk in the city de-

`2 lakh crore mega refinery

First India Bureau
Mumbai: The road has
finally been paved for a
mega refinery project
to come up in Ratnagiri
district’s Barsu village,
now that Rajan Salvi,
the Shiv Sena - Uddhav
Balasaheb Thackeray
MLA from the Ratapur-
Lanza-Sakharov As-
sembly constituency
has extended his sup-
port to the state govern-

Industries Minister
Uday Samant on Tues-
day announced the pro-
ject--originally slated to
come up at Nanar but
later scrapped due to
strong opposition from
the Shiv Sena--follow-
ing a marathon meeting
with all stakeholders,
including legislators.
The refinery, which
will cost more than Rs2
lakh crore, is expected
to create 3,000 direct
and 75,000 indirect jobs.
MLA Salvi had raised
the issue that the Kon-
kan region could face a
water shortage if water
from the Arjun Dam for
the refinery. Address-
ing this, Samant said
that the project would
use water from the Koy-

Mumbai: Freedom
fighter Vinayak Da-
modar Savarkar aid-
ed Mahatma Gan-
dhi’s killer Nathuram
Godse in procuring
the right weapon, or
so claimed Bapu’s
great grandson Tush-
ar Gandhi.
The allegation was
made by the activist
and author in a series
of tweets on Sunday.
The Bharatiya Janata
Party (BJP), however,
called his comments
“unfounded”.
Tushar Gandhi, on
Twitter, said: “Sa-
varkar not only helped
the British, he also
helped Nathuram
Godse find an efficient
gun to murder Bapu.
Till two days before
Bapu’s murder (on
January 30, 1948),
Godse did not have a
reliable weapon to car-
ry out the murder of
MK Gandhi.”
He also claimed that
Prabodhankar Thack-
eray, Shiv Sena founder
Bal Thackeray’s father
and grandfather of for-
mer chief minister Ud-
dhav Thackeray, had
warned Bapu’s com-
panions about a plot to
kill the latter.
Tushar Gandhi, in
the same context, also
criticized the “leaders
of Sanatani Hindus”
Savarkar and Rashtri-
ya Swayamsevak
Sangh founder Keshav
Baliram Hedgewar.
“When in the 1930s
several attempts were
made on Bapu’s life,
Prabodhankar Thack-
eray forewarned Ba-
pu’s companions about
a plot to kill Bapu in
Akola, Vidarbha and
saved Bapu’s life. He
then issued a public
warning to Sanatani
Hindu organizations
and their leadership in
Maharashtra to desist
from their murderous
attacks on Bapu,” Gan-
dhi tweeted.
“Savarkar and
Hedgewar were leaders
of Sanatani Hindus,
thus Prabodhankar's
warning was addressed
to them, Shiv Sena - Ud-
dhav Balasaheb Thack-
eray must be reminded
of this bit of their his-
tory,” he further said.
BJP state spokesper-
son Keshav Upadhye,
remarking on Tushar
Gandhi’s claims, said:
“The court had given
its verdict in this case
(Mahatma Gandhi as-
sassination) and ac-
quitted Savarkar of
such charges. Still,
some people like to mis-
lead the society by
making such unfound-
ed comments against
Savarkar.”

Talking to the media

day, Raut also asked
how many times Shinde
and the Bharatiya Ja-

ter Chandrakant Patil
had visited Belgaum in
Karnataka.
“Neither (Chandra-
kant) Patil nor (Eknath)
Shinde visited Belgaum

asked to withdraw the
false cases registered
against the youth in
border areas,” the Ra-

The CM was report-
edly going to raise the
issue of Belgaum with
Prime Minister Naren-
dra Modi, Raut said, de-
manding that the con-
versation between the
two be made public.
Maharashtra has
a long-pending border
dispute with Karnata-
ka since the formation
of the state when some
areas with sizable Mar-
athi-speaking popula-
tion, like Belgaum,
were included in
Karnataka.
Referring to the re-
cent controversial re-
mark of Maharashtra
Governor Bhagat Singh
Koshyari that Chhatra-
pati Shivaji Maharaj
was an icon of ‘olden
days’, Raut asked, “How
will this chief minister,
deputy chief minister
and the government
who tolerate an insult
to Shivaji Maharaj give
any justice to the people
of the border areas?”
Raut also mentioned
that the Karnataka
government was more
alert about the border
dispute.
On Monday, the CM

to discuss the Belgaum
issue.
The government also

Sindhudurg: On Sun-
day
, the “rampon”
fishermen of this
coastal district had
quite a reason to be
overjoyed—a 12 tonnes
worth of reasons.
These traditional fish-
ermen caught their
biggest haul of sar-
dines and mackerel in
their nets after a gap
of nearly three years.
Rampon fishing—the
traditional non-mecha-
nized kind—re-emerged
as a source of livelihood
for the residents of Va-
yari village, especially
after the COVID-19 pan-
demic ruined the job
market. These fisher-
men use traditional fish-
ing nets and methods,
but getting a good catch
hasbecomeincreasingly
difficult for them be-
cause of overfishing by
mechanized trawlers,
they said.
But, on Sunday
, they
hauled in their largest
catch. “We managed to
catchatleast12-13tonnes

tremely rare event. We
have caught fish on this
scale after a gap of al-
most three years,” said

This is good news for
the many families that
have turned to rampon
fishing in the Malvan
tehsil, under which Va-
yari comes. Out of the
108 rampon associations
in Sindhudurg district,
56 are in Malvan alone,
Ghare said.
For those looking for
employment, despite
this non-mechanised
fishing becoming less
profitable, it is still a vi-
ablesourceof livelihood.
These fishermen go out
to sea at night in their
non-mechanised canoes
to spread their nets.
They set out to sea
again at 4 am to pull in
their nets and gather
the catch.
Narayan Mayekar,
who is in his late 70s,
came to Vayari and
became a fisherman
when he lost his job two
decades ago. Another
resident of Vayari, Ru-
pesh Talawnekar found
employment in rampon
fishing, even though
he is a graduate, but

n Sunday, when Suryakumar
Yadav hit that scintillating
knock of 111 runs against
News Zealand in the second
T20I of the three-match se-
ries, he arguably became the
finest T20 batter in the world.
Suryakumar looked at his
(perhaps) best, notching up
the 3-digit figure in just 49
deliveries. He was on a song.
In fact, the entire team was
on a roll and took the shine
off the Kiwis in style. It was
a massive win.
However, the whole pur-
pose of this article is not
JUST to hail and glorify this
young Team India which
made the win look so easy,
but to remind the vast num-
ber of cricket fans in the
country NOT to be murder-
ous while criticising the
FADING greats. We get better
by the day and that is expect-
ed of us. What Suryakumar
can do today was achieved by
Rohit Sharma and Virat Koh-
li too. Greats will be greats
forever. We just have to keep
in mind that everyday we
must set a benchmark for the
nation to succeed.
The purpose of this article
istoactuallymakeprofession-
als aware of the fact that they
need to quit when the time is
right.Thetruelegendsshould
not be made to look van-
quished, struggling for form
and fatigued. Once the hard-
earned respect is gone… it is
gone forever. One needs to
know when to quit. We all
need to realise and age grace-
fully
. There are various stages
of life and we can all contrib-
ute to an institute, organisa-
tionandthecountrygainfully
.
We needn’t hold on or cling
ontothingslikenewborns.We
need to know when to leave it.
Indians in general have a
habitof hangingoninperhaps
every field from Bollywood to
cricket to politics. We need to
give young India their due. In-
dia’s 1.35-plus billion people
make the nation the second
most populous country in the
entire world and with an aver-
age age of 29, it has one of the
youngest populations globally
.
As this vast resource of young
India joins the workforce, it
could create a ‘demographic
dividend’. Demographic divi-
dend is clearly defined by the
United Nations Population
Fund as economic growth re-
sultingfromashiftinapopula-
tion’s age structure, mainly
when the working-age popula-
tion is larger than the number
of dependents.
We also need to note that
with the young India, India is
in a vantage position. The
overallrateof literacyamong
young India has increased,
with approximately 90 per
cent being able to read and
write. Coupled with the enor-
mous network of social me-
dia and internet penetration,
this has created a digitally
savvy population all across
the nation. With access to the
internet and the affordability
of smartphones, young India
is accessing online resources
that encourage learning and
acquisition of skills.
SOME QUICK FACTS
As per the National Policy for
Skill Development and En-
trepreneurship, 2015, it was
estimated that the average
age of the population in In-
dia by 2020 would be 29 years
as against 40 years in the US,
46 in Europe and 47 in Japan.
India will account for 20
per cent of the worldwide in-
crease in the working-age
population over the next two
decades from the year 2020.
World Bank projections show
that between 2020 and 2040,
India’s population aged be-
tween 15 and 59 years is ex-
pected to increase by 134.6
million. That large number
of potential workers is a big
boon for India’s economic
growth, but it is also a chal-
lenge for policymakers in or-
der to create new and decent
job opportunities.
LOOKING AHEAD
Let’s delve into the future.
The demographic dividend
opportunity in India is the
longest in the world which is
accessible for around five
long decades, starting from
the year 2005 to 2055. Owing
to the change in demograph-
ics and patterns, India is ex-
pected to emerge as one of
the largest consumer econo-
mies in the world.
The surge in young India
will bring about several
unique and interesting pos-
sibilities for the country’s
future, in terms of social mo-
bility, economic growth and
even a more inclusive, whole-
some and diverse cultural
network.

the seriousness
of the problem in India. The
study claims that five bacte-
ria types claimed 6.8 lakh
lives in India in 2019. Glob-
ally, the study found, bacte-
rial infections were the sec-
ond leading cause of deaths
after ischemic heart disease
in 2019. Among the five path-
ogens which claimed lakhs
of lives in India, E Coli was
the deadliest, the study said.
These bacteria alone claimed
1.6 lakh lives in 2019. The
number of deaths caused by
E. coli is surprising as this
pathogen is normally consid-
ered harmless.
The four other bacteria
which the Lancet study iden-
tified as big killers in India
were: S. pneumoniae (1.4
lakh), K. pneumoniae (1.3
lakh), S. aureus (1.2 lakh) and
A. baumanii (1.1 lakh). The
study shows the challenge
before govt, health authori-
ties to deal with these micro-
bial killers. E. coli, which is
caused by contaminated wa-
ter and food, especially raw
vegetables, turns life threat-
ening in children older peo-
ple causing kidney failure.
Bacteria which requires
closer attention of hospital
authorities is A. baumanii. It
may have caused fewer fa-
talities than E. coli and the
two pneumonia causing bac-
teria but occurs mostly in
healthcare settings. Those at
risk include patients on ven-
tilators in hosps, those who
have catheters, are in inten-
sive care units, have open
wounds from surgery or
those who are hospitalised
for prolonged periods. Lancet
has done yeoman’s service by
drawing attention to dangers
posed by these bacteria.
Needed now is closer moni-
toring, better healthcare,

Aam Aadmi Party

in Gujarat polls as it is
a “banner-based party”
as against the BJP
which is cadre-based.

“The AAP lost in Ut-

its in all 67 seats it has
contested in Himachal
Pradesh. They will
meet the same fate in
Gujarat,” said Nadda.
Voting for Shehra and
92 other seats will take
place on December 5, in
the second phase of the
Assembly elections.
“AAP will lose be-
cause it is a banner-
based party which can
only paste banners dur-
ing the polls while we
are a cadre-based party
which believes in serv-
ing people,” he said.
He also accused the
Congress of shedding
“crocodile tears” for

the BJP under PM Nar-

BJP candidate from Gir

She wanted to come out of relationship: Shraddha’s friend
Gajraj Singh
Saloni Khandelwal
Jaipur: As the nation
is still in shock at bru-
tal murder of Shrad-
dha Walkar allegeged-
ly by her live-in part-
ner Aaftab Poonawalla,
First India had an ex-
clusive interview with
Shraddha’s friend Ra-
jat Shukla who shared
chilling details about
the relationship be-
tween Aaftab and
Shraddha, and the like-
ly intentions behind
the gruesome killing.
The excerpts:
z How was Shraddha
as a student, theater
artist and a friend?
I was in regular touch
with Shraddha from
2015 to 18 during col-
lege. We both were pur-
suing Bachelor’s De-
gree in Mass Media
(BMM) from Viva Col-
lege in Virar, Mumbai.
She was a very active
girl with a bold person-
ality, and was bluntly
honest. She was
also into
theater
and we
did per-
form some
acts to-
gether
as well.
She would
always
take part in college
programme as a danc-
er, artiste. It was in
2018 when things start-
ed looking bad at
Shraddha’s end. She
would not talk much,
and would stay alone.
z Do you think Aaft-
ab was in touch with
other girls than
Shraddha?
Aaftab was also
seeing other
women be-
hind Shrad-
dha’s back. I
am informed
and pretty
sure too that
he was seen on
his ‘intruder’
bike with
other
girls
as a pillion. And would
be jealous and inse-
cure if Shraddha even
hung out with her
friends.
(Shraddha last
talked to Rajat in 2019
when they gave an
exam together. But as
per Rajat, Shraddha’s
behavior was totally
different).
“She was very rude,
and wouldn’t talk
straight. She was to-
tally different from
the Shraddha I met in
college.
Rajat said that in the
year 2021, she was in
contact with her best
friend from college.
Shraddha then showed
her friend that her
back was stubbed out
with cigarette burns.
z If any of common
friends knew or were
in touch with Aaftab?
There are many friends
of Shraddha who were
in regular and close
contact with Aaftab. He
never seemed like a per-
son who would have
such an extreme crimi-
nal mindset. People got
negative vibes, but it
was general. No one
thought of him to be
this extreme. Aaftab
likely came with an
agenda, otherwise why
would his family leave
the house they were
staying in for years
right before this horri-
fying news broke out?
z How was Shrad-
dha’s relationship
with her parents?
During college, she
would stay at home.
She wasn’t a hosteller.
She was close to her
mom but not to her
dad. 1.5 years back,
when her mother died,
Shraddha was in a
very vulnerable state.
She was trying her
best to get out of the
relationship but
couldn’t because of
threats from Aaftab. In
fact in 2021, when
things went really hay-
way, she sought help
from her manager. The
manager then sent
his/her friend to
Shraddha’s house to
take Shraddha to hos-
pital as well as the po-
lice station. The man-
ager’s friend knew
Shradha and Aaftab
both as they lived in
the same locality.
When they were trying
to file a complaint at
the police station, Aaft-
ab called and threat-
ened her saying that he
will end his life and
Shraddha, her parents
would be blamed. I just
know of one instance,
there might be many
.
z Was Shraddha a
girl who’d pressure
someone to marry her?
I’m hundred percent
sure that Shraddha did
not pressurize Aaftab
for marriage. No one
has said this except for
Aaftab. Shraddha real-
ly wanted to get out of
the relationship.

linked with heart disor-

cer, have been found in
popular sanitary nap-
kins sold in India, ac-
cording to a study done
by a Delhi-based envi-
ronmental NGO.
The study by NGO,
Toxics Link, found the
presence of phthalates
and volatile organic
compounds in a total of
ten samples, six inor-
ganic and four organic
sanitary pads available
in the market. The find-
ings were published in
a report titled ‘Men-

Exposure to phtha-
lates have been linked
to a variety of health
concerns including en-
docrine disruption, im-
pacts to the heart and

diabetes, some cancers,
and birth defects.
Exposure to VOCs in-
creases the risk of brain
impairment, asthma,
disabilities, certain can-
cers, and the proper
functioning of the re-
productive system.
Highest amounts of
phthalates were found
in self-proclaimed ‘or-
ganic’ sanitary nap-
kins, the study found.
According to the
study, all types of sani-
tary napkins, organic
and inorganic, tested
positive for the pres-
ence of phthalates.
Among phthalates,
maximum concentra-
tion was of DIDP, a type
of phthalate, at 19,460
microgram/kg (µg/kg)
in a self-claimed organ-
ic pad. Concentrations
of a combination of
phthalates were found
to be 0.0321 and 0.0224

FARMERS’ BODIES ASK GOVT
New Delhi (PTI): In a pre-

to lift ban on exports of
agri items like wheat and
restrict import of products
that cost below the mini-

They also demanded that
the government should fo-

groundnut and sunflower,
instead of palm.
Imposition of higher

was another suggestion
made by farmers’ bodies

In his wish list for the

India-UK trade pact
high on priority: Goyal
New Delhi (PTI): The pro-
posed free trade agreement
(FTA) between India and
the UK is a high priority for
both the countries and the
next round of negotiations
for the pact is slated to hap-
pen next month, commerce
and industry minister Pi-
yushGoyalsaidonTuesday
.
He said that things are
progressing well and it will
yield good results.
“We are all very well
aware that it was progress-
ing very fast until we had a
little bit of a blip because
of political happenings in
the other country. Fortu-
nately
, we have a stable gov-
ernment. I believe in office
now (in the UK) and I am
already in touch with my
(UK) counterpart. We are
working together to possi-
bly have an in person meet-
ing also very soon but our
teams are already engaged.
Next month, the next round
of negotiations are slated
to happen,” Goyal said.
He said that industry
support is required for the
agreement and it should be
a fair, equitable and bal-
anced FTA.
He also said that there
should not be any strict
timelines to conclude nego-
tiations for an FTA as such
agreements have to be
thought through and care-
fully calibrated and negoti-
ated. “With UK we are do-
ing a comprehensive deal
like the UAE ….I assure
you that it is a high priority
of both countries. It has
been reiterated in the meet-
ing of the G20,” Goyal said.
India and Britain
launched negotiations for
the FTA in January with
an aim to conclude talks by
Diwali (October 24), but the
deadline was missed due to
political developments in
the UK.

hen we say a movie
“defines” a genera-
tion, we are not talk-
ing about timeless
works but rather
movies that resonat-
ed with us. Our cul-
ture was defined by the charac-
ters, songs, and scenes of those
films. We all connected with
them in some way
, and they con-
tinue to be our favourite go-to
movies. They become so special
to us that we can’t stop but
watch them over and over again
all our lives. City First brings to
you some of the iconic movies
that perfectly define our gen-
eration and the friendships we
build along.
YEH JAWANI HAI DEEWANI
Our generation was graced
nine years ago with a film that
will live on in our memories.
Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani is
without a doubt the movie I’ve
seen the most times and can
now recite the dialogues in
sync. The film, directed by
Ayan Mukherji, examines a
number of issues that young
people deal with, including re-
lationships, romance, aspira-
tions and most importantly
friendship. When my dad
proudly cites Jai and Veeru as
an example of the most self-
less friendship, I swoop in
with Avi, Aditi, and Bun-
ny showing us the most
uplifting friend-
ship. And how
could I possi-
bly forget
t h e
lovely
relationship that Aditi and Nai-
na grew to have as the film went
on—it totally set the bar for
friendship in real life!
ZINDAGI NA MILEGI DOBARA
On July 15, eleven years ago, the film delineated new stand-
ards for friendship and revived the bromance subgenre after
‘Dil Chahta Hai’ had revolutionised it in 2001. Without a ques-
tion, Zoya Akhtar’s best work, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, had
a fantastic response from both the public and the critics. Many
predicted that “ZNMD” would be a trip, a charming excursion that
would be quickly forgotten, but it actually turned out to be a trip with
friends that we treasure even today
. It gives us a great deal of motiva-
tion to live and eagerly anticipates experiencing life with our friends,
travelling, and discovering love somewhere far away
.
JAANE TU... YA JAANE NA
We all learn through relationships and maturation that
friendship is a crucial component of love. Even though
I had heard Shah Rukh Khan say, “Pyaar dosti hai,” in
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, I didn’t fully understand what
it meant until I saw it happen in Abbas Tyrewala’s
Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na. The movie not only perfectly
portrayed youthful relationships, but it also de-
scribed how friendships functioned. Despite its
many clichés and melodramatic elements, I always
enjoy this movie. I’d call it a contemporary classic
because of the songs, the humour, the heartache,
and of course the collegiate friendships.

GENERATION
GENERATION
3 IDIOTS
Rajkumar Hirani’s 3 Idi-
ots is without a doubt a
movie so precious to our
generation, one that made
us laugh, cry, and sing our
hearts out. A fantastic
movie showing Raju, Ran-
cho, and Farhan’s strong
bond as they become
friends in college. This
kind of friendship is
something we all love,
value, and aspire to have.
The movie demonstrated
what it means to have

how friendship tran-
scends prejudice and
class. It is so heartwarm-

so humorous. Whether it
is gatecrashing a wed-

or addressing family-re-

was relatable to an extent
we couldn’t imagine.

  • 1. ‘If such politics goes on, who can tell what will happen in 2 months?’ First India Bureau Aurangabad: Union minister and Bharati- ya Janata Party (BJP) leader Raosaheb Danve has invoked the mid- term collapse of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government to say no one knows what will happen after two months if “such poli- tics” continues. Addressing a gather- ing in Kannad town in Aurangabad district, the BJP MP also spoke about the changed po- litical position of the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena following the 2019 Assembly polls. “No one thought the MVA government, which had completed two-and-a-half years in office, would fall. But such magic happened that the government fell in a night. If such politics is going on who can guess what will happen after two months?” he asked. Danve said the re- sults of the 2019 Assem- bly elections made the Shiv Sena realize that the next government could not be formed without them. “They said all options were open for the party and broke ties with their old ally BJP ,” he added. MAHARASHTRA POLITICAL CLIME Mumbai: Many leaders of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance have indicated that the Maharashtra government headed by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and his deputy Devendra Fadnavis will fall soon, paving the way for mid-term elections in Maharashtra. Now, claiming that “Danve sometimes speaks the truth” Rajya Sabha MP and leader of the Uddhav-led Sena, Sanjay Raut has added fuel to rumours of approaching political turmoil in the state. “Raosaheb Danve sometimes speaks the truth. Anything can happen after two months. I have complete knowledge and 100% certainty that this government will fall,” Raut said. Interestingly, the word in political circles is that the second phase of cabinet expansions—slated to occur in the next few days—will leave several leaders disgruntled. DANVE SPEAKS TRUTH, CERTAIN THAT GOVT WILL FALL: RAUT Union Minister Raosaheb Danve’s comments ignite yet another row in Maha with opposition claiming of mid term elections in the near future First India Bureau Nanded: Congress leader and former chief minister Ashok Chavan on Tuesday said a new governor should be ap- pointed for Maharash- tra and Bhagat Singh Koshyari should be re- moved from his office for his remark on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Chavan was speaking to reporters afteranagitationstaged by Congress workers against the governor in Nanded. Koshyari had said that Chhatrapati Shiva- ji Maharaj was an icon of the “olden days” dur- ing an event in Aurang- abad, triggering a po- litical storm in Maha- rashtra, with activists of the NCP, Congress, Shiv Sena - Uddhav Bal- asaheb Thackeray, and other organizations de- manding his ouster. “The statement made by the governor has in- tensified people’s anger. This is not limited to one single political par- ty, it is a question of na- tional pride,” the Con- gress leader said. Koshyari must be shifted and a new gover- nor should be appointed for the state, Chavan said, adding that no dis- respect to Maharashtra would be tolerated. Meanwhile, the Con- gress’s Aurangabad city and district units staged an agitation at Kranti Chowk in the city de- manding that President Droupadi Murmu recall Koshyari. “Koshyari should be called back by President (Murmu). The governor has no idea whom to compare Chhatrapati Shivaji with,” district Congress president and former MLA Kalyan Kale said. KOSHYARI’S REMARKS ON CHHATRAPATI SHIVAJI MAHARAJ Mumbai: With Gover- nor Koshyari’s state- ments on Shivaji hav- ing raised the political mercury in Maharash- tra, late on Tuesday, a criminal cse was regis- tered against Koshyari in the Mumbai High Court by one Deepak Jagdev. Meanwhle, sources have releaved that Koshyari could visit Delhi on Novem- ber 24-25, where he is likely to meet PM Nar- endra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah to discuss the political climate here. CASE AGAINST KOSHYARI IN MUMBAI HIGH COURT Shiv Sena - Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray leader Sanjay Raut slammed Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari, calling the latter a ‘humble servant and campaigner for the BJP.’ Raut further said that he is not ready to accept Bhagat Singh Koshyari as Maharashtra’s governor. CANT ACCEPT KOSHYARI AS GOVERNOR: RAUT The statement made by the governor has intensified people’s anger. This is not limited to one single political party, it is a question of national pride. —Ashok Chavan No one thought the MVA government, which had completed two-and-a-half years in office, will fall. But such magic happened that the government fell in a night. If such politics is going on who can guess what will happen after two months? —Raosaheb Danve, Union minister and BJP leader Now, Ashok Chavan joins protest party, demands Maha Governor be removed Mentally ill man held for HOAX THREAT TO PM First India Bureau Mumbai: A 38-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday , a day after he called the Mumbai po- lice warning that “two henchmen of Dawood Ibrahim were tasked to kill Prime Minister Narendra Modi”. The man left seven audio messages in Hin- diontheWhatsApphel- pline number of the Mumbai Traffic police claim- i n g that the gangster’s henchmenhavecometo India to kill Modi. As the sensitive informa- tion was passed up the chaintothetopbrassof Mumbai police, all se- curity agencies were put on alert. However, the threat turned out to be a hoax. An inquiry revealed that the man, a West Bengal native, was mentally unstable. • 2. First India Bureau Mumbai: Freedom fighter Vinayak Da- modar Savarkar aid- ed Mahatma Gan- dhi’s killer Nathuram Godse in procuring the right weapon, or so claimed Bapu’s great grandson Tush- ar Gandhi. The allegation was made by the activist and author in a series of tweets on Sunday. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), however, called his comments “unfounded”. Tushar Gandhi, on Twitter, said: “Sa- varkar not only helped the British, he also helped Nathuram Godse find an efficient gun to murder Bapu. Till two days before Bapu’s murder (on January 30, 1948), Godse did not have a reliable weapon to car- ry out the murder of MK Gandhi.” He also claimed that Prabodhankar Thack- eray, Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray’s father and grandfather of for- mer chief minister Ud- dhav Thackeray, had warned Bapu’s com- panions about a plot to kill the latter. Tushar Gandhi, in the same context, also criticized the “leaders of Sanatani Hindus” Savarkar and Rashtri- ya Swayamsevak Sangh founder Keshav Baliram Hedgewar. “When in the 1930s several attempts were made on Bapu’s life, Prabodhankar Thack- eray forewarned Ba- pu’s companions about a plot to kill Bapu in Akola, Vidarbha and saved Bapu’s life. He then issued a public warning to Sanatani Hindu organizations and their leadership in Maharashtra to desist from their murderous attacks on Bapu,” Gan- dhi tweeted. “Savarkar and Hedgewar were leaders of Sanatani Hindus, thus Prabodhankar's warning was addressed to them, Shiv Sena - Ud- dhav Balasaheb Thack- eray must be reminded of this bit of their his- tory,” he further said. BJP state spokesper- son Keshav Upadhye, remarking on Tushar Gandhi’s claims, said: “The court had given its verdict in this case (Mahatma Gandhi as- sassination) and ac- quitted Savarkar of such charges. Still, some people like to mis- lead the society by making such unfound- ed comments against Savarkar.” First India Bureau Pune: Police have ar- rested Maniram Ya- dav, the absconding driver of the truck that caused a pile-up on the Mumbai-Ben- galuru highway stretch in Pune, and his assistant Lalit Ya- dav, officials said. First India Bureau Mumbai: Shiv Sena - Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray leader Sanjay Raut has asked how will the Eknath Shinde-led Maharashtra govern- ment that tolerates “insult” to Chhatra- pati Shivaji Maharaj ensure justice for the Marathi-speaking population of Bel- gaum and other bor- der areas. Talking to the media in New Delhi on Tues- day, Raut also asked how many times Shinde and the Bharatiya Ja- nata Party (BJP) minis- ter Chandrakant Patil had visited Belgaum in Karnataka. “Neither (Chandra- kant) Patil nor (Eknath) Shinde visited Belgaum as ministers. The Kar- nataka CM should be asked to withdraw the false cases registered against the youth in border areas,” the Ra- jya Sabha MP said. The CM was report- edly going to raise the issue of Belgaum with Prime Minister Naren- dra Modi, Raut said, de- manding that the con- versation between the two be made public. Maharashtra has a long-pending border dispute with Karnata- ka since the formation of the state when some areas with sizable Mar- athi-speaking popula- tion, like Belgaum, were included in Karnataka. Referring to the re- cent controversial re- mark of Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari that Chhatra- pati Shivaji Maharaj was an icon of ‘olden days’, Raut asked, “How will this chief minister, deputy chief minister and the government who tolerate an insult to Shivaji Maharaj give any justice to the people of the border areas?” Raut also mentioned that the Karnataka government was more alert about the border dispute. On Monday, the CM and Deputy Chief Min- ister Devendra Fad- navis held a meeting to discuss the Belgaum issue. These traditional fish- ermen caught their biggest haul of sar- dines and mackerel in their nets after a gap of nearly three years. Rampon fishing—the traditional non-mecha- nized kind—re-emerged as a source of livelihood for the residents of Va- yari village, especially after the COVID-19 pan- demic ruined the job market. These fisher- men use traditional fish- ing nets and methods, but getting a good catch hasbecomeincreasingly difficult for them be- cause of overfishing by mechanized trawlers, they said. But, on Sunday , they hauled in their largest catch. “We managed to catchatleast12-13tonnes of fish. But this is an ex- tremely rare event. We have caught fish on this scale after a gap of al- most three years,” said DilipGhare, secretaryof the Sindhudurg District Rampon Sanghatana. This is good news for the many families that have turned to rampon fishing in the Malvan tehsil, under which Va- yari comes. Out of the 108 rampon associations in Sindhudurg district, 56 are in Malvan alone, Ghare said. For those looking for employment, despite this non-mechanised fishing becoming less profitable, it is still a vi- ablesourceof livelihood. These fishermen go out to sea at night in their non-mechanised canoes to spread their nets. They set out to sea again at 4 am to pull in their nets and gather the catch. Narayan Mayekar, who is in his late 70s, came to Vayari and became a fisherman when he lost his job two decades ago. Another resident of Vayari, Ru- pesh Talawnekar found employment in rampon fishing, even though he is a graduate, but couldn’t find a job in the city . “Youcanearnaround Rs 15,000-20,000 per month,” Talawnekar said about rampon fishing. PERSPECTIVE MUMBAI | WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 23, 2022 04 www.firstindia.co.in I www.firstindia.co.in/epapers/mumbai I twitter.com/thefirstindia I facebook.com/thefirstindia I instagram.com/thefirstindia n Sunday, when Suryakumar Yadav hit that scintillating knock of 111 runs against News Zealand in the second T20I of the three-match se- ries, he arguably became the finest T20 batter in the world. Suryakumar looked at his (perhaps) best, notching up the 3-digit figure in just 49 deliveries. He was on a song. In fact, the entire team was on a roll and took the shine off the Kiwis in style. It was a massive win. However, the whole pur- pose of this article is not JUST to hail and glorify this young Team India which made the win look so easy, but to remind the vast num- ber of cricket fans in the country NOT to be murder- ous while criticising the FADING greats. We get better by the day and that is expect- ed of us. What Suryakumar can do today was achieved by Rohit Sharma and Virat Koh- li too. Greats will be greats forever. We just have to keep in mind that everyday we must set a benchmark for the nation to succeed. The purpose of this article istoactuallymakeprofession- als aware of the fact that they need to quit when the time is right.Thetruelegendsshould not be made to look van- quished, struggling for form and fatigued. Once the hard- earned respect is gone… it is gone forever. One needs to know when to quit. We all need to realise and age grace- fully . There are various stages of life and we can all contrib- ute to an institute, organisa- tionandthecountrygainfully . We needn’t hold on or cling ontothingslikenewborns. We need to know when to leave it. Indians in general have a habitof hangingoninperhaps every field from Bollywood to cricket to politics. We need to give young India their due. In- dia’s 1.35-plus billion people make the nation the second most populous country in the entire world and with an aver- age age of 29, it has one of the youngest populations globally . As this vast resource of young India joins the workforce, it could create a ‘demographic dividend’. Demographic divi- dend is clearly defined by the United Nations Population Fund as economic growth re- sultingfromashiftinapopula- tion’s age structure, mainly when the working-age popula- tion is larger than the number of dependents. We also need to note that with the young India, India is in a vantage position. The overallrateof literacyamong young India has increased, with approximately 90 per cent being able to read and write. Coupled with the enor- mous network of social me- dia and internet penetration, this has created a digitally savvy population all across the nation. With access to the internet and the affordability of smartphones, young India is accessing online resources that encourage learning and acquisition of skills. SOME QUICK FACTS As per the National Policy for Skill Development and En- trepreneurship, 2015, it was estimated that the average age of the population in In- dia by 2020 would be 29 years as against 40 years in the US, 46 in Europe and 47 in Japan. India will account for 20 per cent of the worldwide in- crease in the working-age population over the next two decades from the year 2020. World Bank projections show that between 2020 and 2040, India’s population aged be- tween 15 and 59 years is ex- pected to increase by 134.6 million. That large number of potential workers is a big boon for India’s economic growth, but it is also a chal- lenge for policymakers in or- der to create new and decent job opportunities. LOOKING AHEAD Let’s delve into the future. The demographic dividend opportunity in India is the longest in the world which is accessible for around five long decades, starting from the year 2005 to 2055. The authorities have been strict in enforcing the ban despite criticism. The event has not been short on soccer entertainment. The Saudis beating Argentina 2-1 proved that. TOP TWEETS F he Lancet’s study on deaths caused by bacterial infec- tions has flagged the seriousness of the problem in India. The study claims that five bacte- ria types claimed 6.8 lakh lives in India in 2019. Glob- ally, the study found, bacte- rial infections were the sec- ond leading cause of deaths after ischemic heart disease in 2019. Among the five path- ogens which claimed lakhs of lives in India, E Coli was the deadliest, the study said. These bacteria alone claimed 1.6 lakh lives in 2019. The number of deaths caused by E. coli is surprising as this pathogen is normally consid- ered harmless. The four other bacteria which the Lancet study iden- tified as big killers in India were: S. pneumoniae (1.4 lakh), K. pneumoniae (1.3 lakh), S. aureus (1.2 lakh) and A. baumanii (1.1 lakh). The study shows the challenge before govt, health authori- ties to deal with these micro- bial killers. E. coli, which is caused by contaminated wa- ter and food, especially raw vegetables, turns life threat- ening in children older peo- ple causing kidney failure. Bacteria which requires closer attention of hospital authorities is A. baumanii. It may have caused fewer fa- talities than E. coli and the two pneumonia causing bac- teria but occurs mostly in healthcare settings. Those at risk include patients on ven- tilators in hosps, those who have catheters, are in inten- sive care units, have open wounds from surgery or those who are hospitalised for prolonged periods. Lancet has done yeoman’s service by drawing attention to dangers posed by these bacteria. Needed now is closer moni- toring, better healthcare, cleaner hospitals, awareness. She wanted to come out of relationship: Shraddha’s friend Gajraj Singh Saloni Khandelwal Jaipur: As the nation is still in shock at bru- tal murder of Shrad- dha Walkar allegeged- ly by her live-in part- ner Aaftab Poonawalla, First India had an ex- clusive interview with Shraddha’s friend Ra- jat Shukla who shared chilling details about the relationship be- tween Aaftab and Shraddha, and the like- ly intentions behind the gruesome killing. The excerpts: z How was Shraddha as a student, theater artist and a friend? I was in regular touch with Shraddha from 2015 to 18 during col- lege. We both were pur- suing Bachelor’s De- gree in Mass Media (BMM) from Viva Col- lege in Virar, Mumbai. She was a very active girl with a bold person- ality, and was bluntly honest. She was also into theater and we did per- form some acts to- gether as well. She would always take part in college programme as a danc- er, artiste. It was in 2018 when things start- ed looking bad at Shraddha’s end. She would not talk much, and would stay alone. z Do you think Aaft- ab was in touch with other girls than Shraddha? Aaftab was also seeing other women be- hind Shrad- dha’s back. I am informed and pretty sure too that he was seen on his ‘intruder’ bike with other girls as a pillion. And would be jealous and inse- cure if Shraddha even hung out with her friends. (Shraddha last talked to Rajat in 2019 when they gave an exam together. But as per Rajat, Shraddha’s behavior was totally different). “She was very rude, and wouldn’t talk straight. She was to- tally different from the Shraddha I met in college. Rajat said that in the year 2021, she was in contact with her best friend from college. Shraddha then showed her friend that her back was stubbed out with cigarette burns. z If any of common friends knew or were in touch with Aaftab? There are many friends of Shraddha who were in regular and close contact with Aaftab. He never seemed like a per- son who would have such an extreme crimi- nal mindset. People got negative vibes, but it was general. No one thought of him to be this extreme. Aaftab likely came with an agenda, otherwise why would his family leave the house they were staying in for years right before this horri- fying news broke out? z How was Shrad- dha’s relationship with her parents? During college, she would stay at home. She wasn’t a hosteller. She was close to her mom but not to her dad. 1.5 years back, when her mother died, Shraddha was in a very vulnerable state. She was trying her best to get out of the relationship but couldn’t because of threats from Aaftab. In fact in 2021, when things went really hay- way, she sought help from her manager. The manager then sent his/her friend to Shraddha’s house to take Shraddha to hos- pital as well as the po- lice station. The man- ager’s friend knew Shradha and Aaftab both as they lived in the same locality. When they were trying to file a complaint at the police station, Aaft- ab called and threat- ened her saying that he will end his life and Shraddha, her parents would be blamed. I just know of one instance, there might be many . z Was Shraddha a girl who’d pressure someone to marry her? I’m hundred percent sure that Shraddha did not pressurize Aaftab for marriage. No one has said this except for Aaftab. Shraddha real- ly wanted to get out of the relationship. The find- ings were published in a report titled ‘Men- strual Waste 2022’. Exposure to phtha- lates have been linked to a variety of health concerns including en- docrine disruption, im- pacts to the heart and reproductive systems, diabetes, some cancers, and birth defects. Exposure to VOCs in- creases the risk of brain impairment, asthma, disabilities, certain can- cers, and the proper functioning of the re- productive system. Highest amounts of phthalates were found in self-proclaimed ‘or- ganic’ sanitary nap- kins, the study found. According to the study, all types of sani- tary napkins, organic and inorganic, tested positive for the pres- ence of phthalates. Among phthalates, maximum concentra- tion was of DIDP, a type of phthalate, at 19,460 microgram/kg (µg/kg) in a self-claimed organ- ic pad. Concentrations of a combination of phthalates were found to be 0.0321 and 0.0224 gram in an organic and an inorganic sample, respectively, which is greater than 0.1% by the weight of the prod- uct mandated under EU regulations, study said. • 11. 10 ETC MUMBAI | WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 23, 2022 www.firstindia.co.in I www.firstindia.co.in/epapers/mumbai I twitter.com/thefirstindia facebook.com/thefirstindia I instagram.com/thefirstindia hen we say a movie “defines” a genera- tion, we are not talk- ing about timeless works but rather movies that resonat- ed with us. Our cul- ture was defined by the charac- ters, songs, and scenes of those films. We all connected with them in some way , and they con- tinue to be our favourite go-to movies. They become so special to us that we can’t stop but watch them over and over again all our lives. City First brings to you some of the iconic movies that perfectly define our gen- eration and the friendships we build along. YEH JAWANI HAI DEEWANI Our generation was graced nine years ago with a film that will live on in our memories. Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani is without a doubt the movie I’ve seen the most times and can now recite the dialogues in sync. The film, directed by Ayan Mukherji, examines a number of issues that young people deal with, including re- lationships, romance, aspira- tions and most importantly friendship. When my dad proudly cites Jai and Veeru as an example of the most self- less friendship, I swoop in with Avi, Aditi, and Bun- ny showing us the most uplifting friend- ship. And how could I possi- bly forget t h e lovely relationship that Aditi and Nai- na grew to have as the film went on—it totally set the bar for friendship in real life! ZINDAGI NA MILEGI DOBARA On July 15, eleven years ago, the film delineated new stand- ards for friendship and revived the bromance subgenre after ‘Dil Chahta Hai’ had revolutionised it in 2001. Without a ques- tion, Zoya Akhtar’s best work, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, had a fantastic response from both the public and the critics. Many predicted that “ZNMD” would be a trip, a charming excursion that would be quickly forgotten, but it actually turned out to be a trip with friends that we treasure even today . It gives us a great deal of motiva- tion to live and eagerly anticipates experiencing life with our friends, travelling, and discovering love somewhere far away . JAANE TU... YA JAANE NA We all learn through relationships and maturation that friendship is a crucial component of love. Even though I had heard Shah Rukh Khan say, “Pyaar dosti hai,” in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, I didn’t fully understand what it meant until I saw it happen in Abbas Tyrewala’s Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na. The movie not only perfectly portrayed youthful relationships, but it also de- scribed how friendships functioned. Despite its many clichés and melodramatic elements, I always enjoy this movie. I’d call it a contemporary classic because of the songs, the humour, the heartache, and of course the collegiate friendships. A fantastic movie showing Raju, Ran- cho, and Farhan’s strong bond as they become friends in college. This kind of friendship is something we all love, value, and aspire to have. The movie demonstrated what it means to have your friend’s back and how friendship tran- scends prejudice and class. It is so heartwarm- ing, relevant, and yet so, so humorous. Whether it is gatecrashing a wed- ding, studying together the night before the exam, or addressing family-re- lated concerns, the movie was relatable to an extent we couldn’t imagine.
