“I hear, and I forget. I see,
and I remember. I do, and
I understand.”
Two Fourteen Tribune
Punctuality. Patience. Perseverance.
Dedication to simple mantras moves AHS Student of the
Month forward.
If David Engram’s father could see his son work each week in his Adult High
School class, the late Mr. Engram might be convinced he’s watching a mirror
image of his younger self.
“From the fourth grade all the way to the 12th
grade was one classroom,”
Engram said, remembering his father’s stories about his own early education
years. “So, he said he had to set himself apart from the rest of the classroom
to do what he needed to
do to succeed. I don’t like
distractions either.”
Engram arrives in class
each Monday-Thursday to
his favorite seat, and
immediately gets to work.
On many days, he stays
after class for assistance in
the Open Lab. In particular,
his perseverance with
writing and strong grades
to reflect his work again
prove his father was right. “He said just work hard and give it a little time,
and it will all work out,” Engram remembers. “I’m not a quitter. When I start
something I like to finish it.”
At this pace, Engram is set to achieve his Adult High School diploma by the
end of the year. With that goal completed, he looks forward to continuing
with school and moving toward a better career. He plans to use his education
to move toward a job demanding less of his hands and more of his mind.
“Something where I won’t have to use my muscles all the time, just use my
brain,” he said.
Engram is proud that he made the decision to improve his life and looks
forward to the positive changes his hard work will bring. He urges younger
students to work hard now for their future.
“You’re only going to be young once. What you miss now, you don’t want to
have to go back and get, because then it will take even more of your time,”
Engram advised. “Listen, learn, take advice, be patient, and you will get
somewhere.”

AHS Student Chris Morgan to
train with Charlotte Eagles
soccer league
Since returning to Adult High School with
renewed motivation last summer, student
Chris Morgan has worked hard toward
achieving his diploma. A recent successful
tryout with the Charlotte Eagles has added
more fuel to his fire: team officials selected
Morgan to travel to Chicago, Ill. and Brazil
this summer to strengthen his skills and
train with a minor league section of the
team. Way to go, Chris!
