2. Jen could tell something
was going wrong with her
marriage, but she couldn’t
put her finger on the
problem. They were still
trying for a baby, but Pablo
seemed increasingly
distant.
3. Pablo was often leaving early in the
morning, or getting home late from work.
He told her he was at client parties, and
she wouldn’t enjoy it. But she wondered.
4. And she was right to. Pablo was often
away seeing the mystery blonde woman.
He was now having a full blown affair; she
wanted nothing from him, so he was free
to enjoy their encounters. The baby
making at home made loving his wife a
chore in contrast.
5. So Jen sat at home, not
knowing the extent of the
cracks starting to form.
6. Ariette was still trying to
ingratiate herself with her
old friends, confessing on
the phone to one how
bored she was living in the
provinces. She would never
forgive her father for
squandering their fortune.
7. But her friend came though for her for once,
imparting a bit of gossip relevant to the
isolated Ariette. She perks up immediately at
the news.
Her friends husbands business associate
employs Pablo, and heard him boasting about
being popular with the ladies despite being a
married man. Pablo having an affair? On her
Street?! The scandal! It was wonderful.
8. She invites Jen over, who
dresses up for the occasion
but it is again unnecessary.
Ariette tries dropping the
odd hint throughout their
conversation; but Jen is
either purposefully not
allowing herself to face the
truth or is playing dumb.
Ariette gives up for the
moment.
9. She moves onto other
subjects, including the
Darkstones, but it
becomes obvious Jen
does not share her
husbands views.
Beaten, Ariette allows
her to leave.
10. Trinity is aware of the hostility from
number 7, and is unsure how to
proceed. It doesn’t bother her
whether or not this aging ex-socialite
likes her, but her twin Belladonna
might care.
11. She wasn’t sure how to sort it either.
She was too busy working to begin any
kind of campaign. And Belladonna…
well Trinity didn’t think she had the
right kind of mind to sort out this kind
of problem.
12. Her Boss was working
her hard because she
was so skilled, never
caught. He called her to
a local dive bar, where
the barkeep had been
instructed to serve her
on the house in his
absence.
13. Trinity couldn’t help but ask
why he had arranged to
meet, a break with the usual
conventions of their trade.
He had always phoned with
instructions before.
14. She was shocked, but flattered by his
answer. Apparently he had been
watching her work, and how she
operated… and he trusted her. He was
prepping her for promotion.
15. Inspired by his trust in her, she agrees
to take on his latest assignment. It’s
unusual in that the target is within
Appaloosa’s boundaries.
16. She was sneaky, the family were in and
the lights were on. It could go very badly.
17. She read the papers
religiously for the
next few days, and
to her surprise the
burglary was
reported.
Apparently the lamp
was a one-of-a-kind
designer thing.
There’s no
accounting for taste.
But there was no
mention of any
suspects, she had
done it again.
18. After her success, her boss
used for most of his private
work. There was a hierarchy,
but he was skipping it to work
with her directly. Trinity was
loving it.
19. But it niggled at her that
she still didn’t know his
name, nor he hers. She
wanted to get to know
him better, but how could
she? He was just ‘The
Poet, and she the
‘Balanced Stone’.
20. Teresa was really enjoying
working for Warren. She was
often there at the weekend,
helping him with the garden that
was becoming his livelihood.
21. She had a selfish reason or helping him. The
more money he made form his fledgling
business, the longer he could employ her. She
had been disgusted by Pablo’s suggestion she
sleep with him for financial security, but it had
forced her to admit some difficult truths. She
was attracted to the older man, however
inappropriate that may be.
22. She was becoming quite
the permanent feature in
the house, staying late
after James was in bed to
cook dinner for herself
and Warren.
23. She never said no if he asked
her to join him in anything.
Dinner, a work out, catching
a TV show…. It was like he
was sounding her out,
seeing how much she
enjoyed his company. She
wasn’t sure why, but she
went along with it.
24. When Christmas
arrived, he invited her
to spend it with him
and James. He hadn’t
expected her to say yes,
but was thrilled when
she did. He didn’t know
she had no one else to
spend it with.
25. He was glad she seemed to be enjoying
herself, and that his gifts weren’t too
ostentatious. He’d thought about
bigger things, but hadn’t wanted to
make her uncomfortable.
26. Teresa couldn’t help it, she was
warming to her boss despite the
niggles that Pablo had planted.
27. She finally admitted to
herself that she liked him in
a romantic way. It was a bit
of a shock, she’d thought
she’d shut down any kind of
feelings along those lines
long ago.
Especially since the last
time she’d gotten involved
with someone superior to
herself in the workplace.
28. But it wasn’t feeling much like a
workplace at the moment.
29. And as the evening wore on, they
both got the feeling the tone of
their working relationship was
going to change.
