Just as in real life, it's important for microservices to undergo regular health checks. In this talk, we'll provide a systems-based approach to execute an app health check along 10 different dimensions: monitoring and metrics, failure mode analysis, technical debt, emergency response, performance optimization, change management, microservices rationalization, platform as a product, balanced team, and path to production. We'll explain how to address issues uncovered during a health check and provide recommendations on how to build a sustainable Day 2 app-ops reliability engineering practice.

API First or Events First: Is it a Binary Choice?

When do you use API-first or events-first architecture? Is this a binary choice? This is a false dichotomy! A mental model is needed to frame the architecture, packaging, and programming choices for modern applications. Varying degrees of combination of events and APIs can be used to design a system. Event notifications-based systems require an API callback to the source. CQRS and event-sourcing patterns, on the other hand, are on the complex end of the event-driven spectrum. APIs also have a maturity model, evolving with the adoption of reactive paradigms. In this session, we’ll look at heuristics such as cost, latency, security, and external integrations that will influence implementation. Architects will learn actionable fitness functions to strike a balance between APIs and events to build sustainable architectures.

SpringOne Platform 2017 Thomas Seibert, Mercedes-Benz.io GmbH; Gregor Zurowski, Independent Consultant "The main idea for this talk is to show the audience how we implemented a microservice architecture based on Pivotal Cloud Foundry (PCF) in a corporate environment by avoiding monolithic applications, allowing shorter release cycles and enabling horizontal scalability with a multitude of teams. This case study covers project inception, conception, implementation and going into production. The goal is to share our experiences, ideas and gotchas on our path to digital transformation with PCF. We start off by briefly describing our initial design ideas of moving away from a heavyweight application model to lightweight, flexible and scalable applications. In the main part of the presentation we focus on the design and architecture of our PCF environment and our microservice applications. In this part, we discuss the following topics: How we set up our PCF foundations. How we enabled our teams and organized business services into PCF orgs and spaces. Our development stack that includes Spring Boot, Spring Cloud, and Spring Cloud Services. The need for shared services across space and org boundaries. Our application versioning concept and how we implemented it. The use of an API gateway component and how we implemented it. Patterns for backend integration. Zero downtime deployments. In the last part, we speak about issues we experienced, lessons we learned, plans for improvement, as well as opportunities and enhancements for the platform."

Cloud Foundry Platform Operations - CF Summit 2015

In this session Cornelia will share lessons learned from a month spent on a team that operates a production instance of Cloud Foundry. From her first morning addressing a prod incident, through building ops dashboards, documenting how a crashed micro-bosh is recovered, and prod deploys, she will share lessons on the value of declarative, immutable infrastructure, cloud-native application design and proper abstractions. Tried and true practices such as checklists and jumpboxes remain, while new ones such as primetime deploys and even live experimentation in prod emerge. The punchline? Even as an ops novice, she was immediately productive. In this session Cornelia will present specific techniques for using BOSH, system metrics and logging, dashboards, alerting systems and more to manage your CF deployment.

How do we add some sanity to the process of constructing microservices and provide guidelines and design heuristics on restructuring microservices. In this talk we will look at life after running microservices architectures in production and learn from the mistakes committed over the past five years. We will analyze real life systems on the criteria for consolidating microservices into monoliths or moduliths based on technical and business heuristics as illustrated In [4]. The techniques - a combination of mapping microservices to core technical attributes [2] reduced by affinity mapping and business domain context distillation [3] - have emerged from working with a number of customers where the value of microservices has not been realized despite leveraging Domain Driven Design. 1. 넷플릭스에서는 높은 속도로 데이터를 제공하기 위해서 뿐만 아니라 멀티 리전의 데이터 가용성을 바탕으로한 전체 서비스 가용성 유지를 위해 캐시를 사용하고 있습니다. 이 앞의 세션에서 보았던 마이크로서비스 구조를 염두해 둘때 한가지 가장 간단한 변화는 외부 클라이언트로 부터 유입되는 단 하나의 요청에 대한 응답을 만들기 위해 다수의 내부 서비스들로 부터 데이터를 확보해야 하며, 이는 다수 서비스들에 대한 요청과 응답으로 이루어지게 됩니다. 내부 네트워크 성능, 데이터 저장소의 응답속도등의 복합적인 영향으로 인해 마이크로 서비스는 쉽게 느려질 수 있으며, 이는 보통 '팬아웃 효과'로 알려져 있습니다. 뿐만 아니라 다수 서비스간의 데이터 정합성 유지, 필요에 따라 각 서비스간 데이터의 다운타임 없는 이동, 증가하는 데이터량에 동시에 증가하는 데이터 소스의 부하, 그리고 이런 것들을 모두 감안한 데이터 복제 등을 처리해야 할 필요가 있습니다. 본 세션에서는 넷플릭스에서는 이런 문제를 어떤 방식으로 해결하는지, 그리고 스프링 부트, 스프링 클라우드를 비롯한 피보탈의 기술을 사용해서 어떻게 빠르고 쉽게 사용할 수 있는지에 대해 알아봅니다.

The Earth System Grid Federation (ESGF) is a global network of data servers that archives and distributes the planet’s largest collection of Earth system model output for thousands of climate and environmental scientists worldwide. Many of these petabyte-scale data archives are located in proximity to large high-performance computing (HPC) or cloud computing resources, but the primary workflow for data users consists of transferring data, and applying computations on a different system. As a part of the ESGF 2.0 US project (funded by the United States Department of Energy Office of Science), we developed pre-defined data workflows, which can be run on-demand, capable of applying many data reduction and data analysis to the large ESGF data archives, transferring only the resultant analysis (ex. visualizations, smaller data files). In this talk, we will showcase a few of these workflows, highlighting how Globus Flows can be used for petabyte-scale climate analysis.

Understanding Globus Data Transfers with NetSage

Globus

NetSage is an open privacy-aware network measurement, analysis, and visualization service designed to help end-users visualize and reason about large data transfers. NetSage traditionally has used a combination of passive measurements, including SNMP and flow data, as well as active measurements, mainly perfSONAR, to provide longitudinal network performance data visualization. It has been deployed by dozens of networks world wide, and is supported domestically by the Engagement and Performance Operations Center (EPOC), NSF #2328479. We have recently expanded the NetSage data sources to include logs for Globus data transfers, following the same privacy-preserving approach as for Flow data. Using the logs for the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) as an example, this talk will walk through several different example use cases that NetSage can answer, including: Who is using Globus to share data with my institution, and what kind of performance are they able to achieve? How many transfers has Globus supported for us? Which sites are we sharing the most data with, and how is that changing over time? How is my site using Globus to move data internally, and what kind of performance do we see for those transfers? What percentage of data transfers at my institution used Globus, and how did the overall data transfer performance compare to the Globus users?

Providing Globus Services to Users of JASMIN for Environmental Data Analysis

JASMIN is the UK’s high-performance data analysis platform for environmental science, operated by STFC on behalf of the UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). In addition to its role in hosting the CEDA Archive (NERC’s long-term repository for climate, atmospheric science & Earth observation data in the UK), JASMIN provides a collaborative platform to a community of around 2,000 scientists in the UK and beyond, providing nearly 400 environmental science projects with working space, compute resources and tools to facilitate their work. High-performance data transfer into and out of JASMIN has always been a key feature, with many scientists bringing model outputs from supercomputers elsewhere in the UK, to analyse against observational or other model data in the CEDA Archive. A growing number of JASMIN users are now realising the benefits of using the Globus service to provide reliable and efficient data movement and other tasks in this and other contexts. Further use cases involve long-distance (intercontinental) transfers to and from JASMIN, and collecting results from a mobile atmospheric radar system, pushing data to JASMIN via a lightweight Globus deployment. We provide details of how Globus fits into our current infrastructure, our experience of the recent migration to GCSv5.4, and of our interest in developing use of the wider ecosystem of Globus services for the benefit of our user community.
