李宏毅教授是琳山老師口中的「嫡傳弟子」之一，也是目前已「無縫接軌」接掌琳山老師的語音實驗室的「接班人」。在這裡他細述當年如何由茫然的電機系學生，在琳山老師一步步引導鼓勵之下走到今天；最後他並代表今日語音實驗室的所有碩博士生獻上他們給琳山老師的紀念品：一個手執雷射寶劍，但站在講桌前，桌上有一台筆電的「尤達大師」的公仔。「尤達大師」是同學們對琳山老師的暱稱，取自電影「星際大戰」的典故，片中尤達大師訓練出整群的「絕地武士」，人人武功高強，都有一把雷射寶劍；同學們人人都希望自己是「絕地武士」，琳山老師自是尤達大師了。這是李宏毅教授致詞分享時用的投影片。

臺大電機系李琳山教授，於 1977 年於美國史丹佛（Stanford）大學拿到電機博士，於 1979 年回母系任教。回臺灣服務後，才決定投入之前完全不熟悉的領域 ── 語音辨識，也就是現在人們熟悉的「語音輸入」服務。李教授長期研究華語的辨識，對目前廣泛在電子產品中使用的中文語音輸入服務，有巨大的貢獻，也因此於 2016 年獲得中研院工程領域的院士榮銜。大約在 1990 年代，家用電腦開始普及，較年長的讀者應該非常了解當時的電腦是多麼大且慢，硬碟容量只有幾十 MB，而現今一個小小的記憶卡容量就有幾十 GB，足足多了 1000 倍。李教授在那個年代即投入語音辨識系統，在硬體資源不足情況下，需克服許多研究上的困難。李教授在 2017 年 1 月 12 日接受本刊專訪，分享其研究的心路歷程與教育心得。
