Rape without Women:
Print Culture and the Politicization
of Rape, 1765-1815

In 1815 a legal manual added a commentary to its recital of the proper treatment of
rape. The author noted that "the material facts requisite to be given" in a trial for rape
"are highly improper to be publicly discussed, except only in a court of justice." This
sentence unintentionally pointed to a central paradox of rape: while the classification
of a given sexual interaction as a criminal and morally reprehensible act of rape
depended on specific details, those details were not fit for public exposition. Yet
Americans regularly published remarks on rape in virtually every form of print: news-
papers and almanacs, broadsides and pamphlets, novels and plays. We are accus-
tomed to historians' viewing rape within its legal setting, but there was a print world
of rape outside court proceedings and their accompanying publications. That print
world transformed rape from an intimate sexual act into a public symbol that could
define national and social boundaries.1

Civil rights movement
The Civil Rights Movement in the United States from 1955-1968 aimed to outlaw racial discrimination against African Americans and restore voting rights in Southern states. Led by figures like Martin Luther King Jr., the movement used nonviolent protests like bus boycotts, sit-ins, and marches to advocate for civil rights and racial equality. King's iconic "I Have a Dream" speech at the 1963 March on Washington helped raise awareness of ongoing issues of racism and injustice. The movement achieved several important victories, including the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Voting Rights Act of 1965, but also continued to face resistance from segregationists.
The 2nd great awakening
The Second Great Awakening led to increased religious activity and conversions in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. It contributed to the growth of new religious movements and reforms. There was a shift towards abolitionism as many felt the nation should repent for slavery. The Grimké sisters played a key role in advocating for both the abolitionist and women's rights movements through speeches, writings, and petitions. Their efforts helped women gain a place in the public sphere advocating for their and slaves' rights.
Peter Clark and the 1858 colored convention
Peter Clark was a prominent African American abolitionist, educator, and activist in Cincinnati in the mid-19th century. He witnessed the 1841 Cincinnati race riots as a young man, fueling his commitment to racial equality. Clark was an important figure at the 1858 Cincinnati Colored Convention, where he criticized the Republican Party for not doing enough to abolish slavery. He argued that Black people should pursue their own rights instead of relying on Republicans. Clark had a lifelong career advocating for racial justice, education reform, and workers' rights in Cincinnati until leaving the city in 1887.

Philip Randolph and organized by Bayard Rustin to demand equal rights and an end to racial discrimination. The United States is neither a land of nativists nor a haven for
immigrants. Our xenophobic impulses and loftiest ideals have been in conflict
since the founding.
Immigrant and immigrant-descended intellectuals remade the Statue
of Liberty into a sign of greeting and protection.
The Statue of Liberty’s long career as a beacon to the oppressed began
in 1882 with refugees whose religion some Americans feared. The czar was
cracking down on Jews, and tens of thousands of people fled across Europe,
many reaching the East Coast of the United States. Jewish American
organizations rushed to aid them, as commentators debated what the sudden
influx meant. What, if anything, did America owe these impoverished
strangers, with their non-Christian faith? In a booming industrial society
hungry for workers but fearful of beggars and bomb-throwers, were they a
benefit or a danger?
It was at this moment that a Jewish American poet in New York,
Emma Lazarus, made her way to the depot on Wards Island, where the
refugees were being housed. Moved by their suffering, she taught classes and
pressed for better shelter, food, and sanitation. Later, Lazarus was asked to
contribute a poem for an auction to raise funds for the Statue of Liberty’s
pedestal, and here she did something strange.
Until then, the icon had symbolized Franco-American friendship and
trans-Atlantic republicanism. But in her sonnet, Lazarus recast it as a welcome
signal to the poor and threatened, a “Mother of Exiles” calling out to the world
to give over its “huddled masses yearning to breathe free.” Lazarus’ statue was
not asking: “Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost, to me”; it commanded.
The poem wore its ambivalence about immigrants on its sleeve—“wretched
refuse,” it called them—but it also expressed the idea of the United States as a
haven for outcasts in bold new ways, ways that would face repeated onslaughts
in the coming decades.
Last week, Donald Trump launched the latest of these attacks, issuing
an executive order that suspends the entrance of all refugees for 120 days,
prohibits the entry of citizens from seven Muslim-majority countries for at
least 90 days, and bars Syrian refugees indefinitely. Given the racist, anti-
immigrant nationalism at the center of Trump’s presidential campaign, his
action came as no surprise. For his supporters, it represented a blow against
menacing Islam and an assertion of white, Protestant identity as the genuine
core of what it means to be American. For Trump’s many critics, it
represented an outrageous affront to the United States’ deepest values as a
beckoning “nation of immigrants,” the tradition that Lazarus championed.

On June 7, 1892, Homer Plessy bought a first‐class rail ticket to travel from New Orleans to Covington, Louisiana.
The journey should have taken several hours, but Plessy made it only one stop before the train’s conductor
approached and asked if he was in the correct car. The conductor suspected Plessy to be African American, and
Louisiana law required people of color to ride in a separate car, regardless of the ticket they held. Arrested by a
police detective at the next stop, he was charged with boarding a railcar designated for White passengers only. His
act challenged Louisiana’s 1890 Separate Car Act, which stated in part that all railway companies carrying
passengers must “provide equal but separate accommodations for the white and colored races,” (as cited in Davis,
2012). Plessy went peacefully, for his intention had not been to travel to Covington but to challenge the
constitutionality of laws in Louisiana and throughout the South that segregated African Americans in public
accommodations and transportation.
