SOME MYTHS ABOUT THE FAMILY
Ask yourself the following questions:
■ Were families happier in the past than they are now?
■ Is marrying and having children the natural thing to do?
■ Are good families self-sufficient, whereas bad families rely on public assistance?
■ Is the family a bastion of love and support?
■ Should all of us strive to be as perfect as possible in our families?
If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, you—like most Americans—believe some of the myths about marriage and the family. Most of these myths are dysfunctional, but some can be functional.
Myths Can Be Dysfunctional
Myths are dysfunctional when they have negative (though often unintended) consequences that disrupt a family. The myth of the perfect family can make us miserable. We may feel that there is something wrong with us if we don’t live up to some idealized image. Instead of accepting our current families, we might pressure our children to become what we want them to be or spend a lifetime waiting for our parents or in-laws to accept us. We may also become very critical of family members or withdraw emotionally because they don’t fit into a mythical mold.

Do myths affect me and my family?
Myths can also divert our attention from widespread social problems that lead to family crises. If people blame themselves for the gap they perceive between image and reality, they may not recognize the external forces, such as social policies, that create difficulties on the individual level. For example, if we believe that only bad, sick, or maladjusted people beat their children, we will search for solutions at the individual level, such as counseling, support groups, and therapy. As you’ll see in later chapters, however, and as millions of Americans have experienced since 2008, numerous family crises come from large-scale problems such as racism, greedy corporate executives in financial industries, economic downturns, and unemployment.
Myths Can Be Functional
Not all myths are harmful. Some are functional because they bring people together and promote social solidarity (Guest, 1988). If myths give us hope that we can have a good marriage and family life, for example, we won’t give up at the first sign of problems. In this sense, myths can help us maintain emotional balance during crises.
Myths can also free us from guilt or shame. For instance, “We fell out of love” is a more face-saving explanation for getting a divorce than “I made a stupid mistake” or “I married an alcoholic.”
The same myth can be both functional and dysfunctional. Belief in the decline of the family has been functional in generating social policies (such as child-support legislation) that try to keep children of divorced families from sinking into poverty. But this same myth ...

If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, you—like most Americans—believe some of the myths about marriage and the family. Most of these myths are dysfunctional, but some can be functional.
Myths Can Be Dysfunctional
Myths are dysfunctional when they have negative (though often unintended) consequences that disrupt a family. The myth of the perfect family can make us miserable. We may feel that there is something wrong with us if we don’t live up to some idealized image. Instead of accepting our current families, we might pressure our children to become what we want them to be or spend a lifetime waiting for our parents or in-laws to accept us. We may also become very critical of family members or withdraw emotionally because they don’t fit into a mythical mold.

Do myths affect me and my family?
Myths can also divert our attention from widespread social problems that lead to family crises. If people blame themselves for the gap they perceive between image and reality, they may not recognize the external forces, such as social policies, that create difficulties on the individual level. For example, if we believe that only bad, sick, or maladjusted people beat their children, we will search for solutions at the individual level, such as counseling, support groups, and therapy. As you’ll see in later chapters, however, and as millions of Americans have experienced since 2008, numerous family crises come from large-scale problems such as racism, greedy corporate executives in financial industries, economic downturns, and unemployment.
Myths Can Be Functional
Not all myths are harmful. Some are functional because they bring people together and promote social solidarity (Guest, 1988). If myths give us hope that we can have a good marriage and family life, for example, we won’t give up at the first sign of problems. In this sense, myths can help us maintain emotional balance during crises.
Myths can also free us from guilt or shame. For instance, “We fell out of love” is a more face-saving explanation for getting a divorce than “I made a stupid mistake” or “I married an alcoholic.”
The same myth can be both functional and dysfunctional. Belief in the decline of the family has been functional in generating social policies (such as child-support legislation) that try to keep children of divorced families from sinking into poverty. But this same myth ...

He has also written many Cam Jansen mysteries and the Young Cam Jansen series.
Illustrator of the Month May 2015
Leo Lionni was an illustrator born in 1910 who is best known for his easy picture books for children. He won the Caldecott Honor Medal four times for books featuring animal characters representing human traits and experiences. Lionni believed that getting ideas for his stories required hard work, not just inspiration, and that in creating his characters he became one with them to understand their human perspectives and qualities.
Author of the Month May 2015
Mary Pope Osborne is an author known for her Magic Tree House series of children's books. She conducts extensive research on various topics and works the factual information she finds into imaginative plots. During her research for a book set in Vienna, Osborne discovered that the palace she wanted to feature in the story had historically housed the first private zoo, allowing her to include wild animals in the story in a surprising but factually accurate way. Osborne advises aspiring writers to read widely to learn about different types of stories and develop their own writing skills.
Illustrator of the Month March 2015
Peter Sís is the featured illustrator of the month. He is known for his biographical picture books about famous figures such as Christopher Columbus, Galileo Galilei, Charles Darwin, and Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. Sís draws inspiration from his childhood in communist Czechoslovakia and is interested in people who think differently. He researches each subject extensively and includes details about their childhoods to show that great people start as ordinary children. Sís has won the Hans Christian Andersen Illustrator Award, the highest international recognition for children's book illustrators, as well as three Caldecott Honors.

Wilson Bentley was a farmer born in 1865 in Vermont who was fascinated by snowflakes from a young age. When given a microscope at age 15, he was amazed by the intricate beauty of snowflakes. Determined to share this beauty with others, he worked to capture snowflake images under the microscope, becoming the world's leading expert on snowflakes by the time of his death in 1931, having photographed over 5,000 unique snowflake patterns.
Kevin Henkes: Illustrator of the month, November
Kevin Henkes is the featured illustrator of the month. He has written and illustrated over 35 titles for children, including the Caldecott Medal winning Kitten's First Full Moon. Henkes started using mice as main characters after experimenting with different animals, finding that mice worked well for his humorous stories. For Henkes, the words of the story come first before he begins illustrating.
Jean Fritz: Author of the Month November
Jean Fritz is the author of the month. She wrote both fiction and nonfiction, but is best known for her biographies. Her favorite part of the writing process was researching little known facts to include in her books. She grew up in China and wrote a memoir about her childhood there that won a Newbery Honor. Her advice for writers is to keep a diary writing about feelings and opinions rather than just facts, and to feel they are writing from themselves rather than for others.
Fiction Vs NonFiction

- 3. WHAT DO YOU HOPE READERS COME AWAY FROM THE BOOK UNDERSTANDING ABOUT FAMILY? I want them to start thinking about their family histories, and if they haven’t started asking those questions, to ask their parents, grandparents, uncles, and cousins. America has its own culture, but it is comprised of other cultures, and we need to hang onto that. The values in the story are about working hard and valuing family. That’s the message I hope will come across, whatever culture someone is from. Every family has stories, and a lot of families’ stories start in another country.
- 4. HOW MUCH FAMILY RESEARCH WAS INVOLVED? A lot. I went through lots of photo albums, found ship manifests... I didn’t know when my great-grandfather came here, but I knew where he was. I went to the New York Public Library and found the ship manifest. And lots of talking: the best source of information was my grandmother.
- 5. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO ASPIRING AUTHORS? Two things: write and read EVERY DAY. Even if you don’t feel like reading and even if you write NOTHING. Do it every day!!!
