Kevin Henkes is the featured illustrator of the month. He has written and illustrated over 35 titles for children, including the Caldecott Medal winning Kitten's First Full Moon. Jon Scieszka is an author known for collaborating with other authors and illustrators. David A. Adler is an author born on April 10, 1947 who has written many books about math and in the Picture Book Biography series. Some of his titles include books about math at Dewey Decimal numbers 513.2, 513.5, 530.8, and 793.73 and biographies are shelved according to the subject's last name. He has also written many Cam Jansen mysteries and the Young Cam Jansen series.
Illustrator of the Month May 2015
Leo Lionni was an illustrator born in 1910 who is best known for his easy picture books for children. He won the Caldecott Honor Medal four times for books featuring animal characters representing human traits and experiences. Lionni believed that getting ideas for his stories required hard work, not just inspiration, and that in creating his characters he became one with them to understand their human perspectives and qualities.
Author of the Month May 2015
Mary Pope Osborne is an author known for her Magic Tree House series of children's books. She conducts extensive research on various topics and works the factual information she finds into imaginative plots. During her research for a book set in Vienna, Osborne discovered that the palace she wanted to feature in the story had historically housed the first private zoo, allowing her to include wild animals in the story in a surprising but factually accurate way. Osborne advises aspiring writers to read widely to learn about different types of stories and develop their own writing skills.
Illustrator of the Month March 2015
Peter Sís is the featured illustrator of the month. He is known for his biographical picture books about famous figures such as Christopher Columbus, Galileo Galilei, Charles Darwin, and Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. Sís draws inspiration from his childhood in communist Czechoslovakia and is interested in people who think differently. He researches each subject extensively and includes details about their childhoods to show that great people start as ordinary children. Sís has won the Hans Christian Andersen Illustrator Award, the highest international recognition for children's book illustrators, as well as three Caldecott Honors.
Biography Of the Month December 2014
Wilson Bentley was a farmer born in 1865 in Vermont who was fascinated by snowflakes from a young age. When given a microscope at age 15, he was amazed by the intricate beauty of snowflakes. Determined to share this beauty with others, he worked to capture snowflake images under the microscope, becoming the world's leading expert on snowflakes by the time of his death in 1931, having photographed over 5,000 unique snowflake patterns.
Jean Fritz: Author of the Month November
Jean Fritz is the author of the month. She wrote both fiction and nonfiction, but is best known for her biographies. Her favorite part of the writing process was researching little known facts to include in her books. She grew up in China and wrote a memoir about her childhood there that won a Newbery Honor. Her advice for writers is to keep a diary writing about feelings and opinions rather than just facts, and to feel they are writing from themselves rather than for others.
Fiction Vs NonFiction
The document discusses the two main types of books found in a library - fiction and non-fiction. It prompts the reader to determine whether a book is fiction or non-fiction by considering if it tells a made-up story or teaches about a topic. Readers are asked to sort book covers into the categories of fiction or non-fiction and provide evidence to support their thinking. - 1. BOOK OF THE MONTH: OCTOBER 2015 Ike’s Incredible Ink by Brianne Farley
- 2. My stories come from my own experiences. I try to keep a notebook on me to jot down ideas when they pop up. There are always some half-formed ideas in there and, if I’m lucky, one of them starts to grow legs. The book I’m working on now was inspired by my sister, and INK was inspired by that very question: where does one find inspiration?
- 3. HOW DID YOU MAKE THE PICTURES? The illustrations for IKE’S INCREDIBLE INK were first drawn with ink (um, I mean incredible ink) and a dip pen. I then scanned these drawings along with a “library” of ink splotches for Ike’s body and an embarrassing amount of found paper (beautiful handmade paper, old graph paper, dry cleaning tags, etc.). I “cut” the paper digitally and layered it behind the ink drawings.
- 4. WHY DID YOU WANT TO BE AN AUTHOR? I’ve always loved books and, like most artists, have been drawing since I was a kid. Picture books are such a great way to combine these two interests of mine. I remember how much I loved being read to as a kid; the story, the art, when my parents had to say “Oliver Boliver Butt” when reading Dr. Seuss’ Sneeches. It’s pretty great to be part of that experience from the other “side now.”
