Terry Fox lost his leg to cancer at age 18 and resolved to raise money and awareness for cancer research by running across Canada. In 1980, he set off running a marathon per day but had to stop after 143 days due to cancer spreading. Since then, over $700 million has been raised worldwide in his name for cancer research through events like annual Terry Fox Runs. The 2015 Terry Fox Run commemorates the 35th anniversary of his Marathon of Hope.
