MASTER THESIS (2015) - Reversing Provincial Declination via a New
Housing Model
As time goes by the globe becomes ever more globalized with a more open world to fol-
low where new opportunities to increase welfare and better jobs are created increasingly
equally amongst the world’s countries. Country´s economies are linked closer togeth-
er generating more trade, cooperation, investment and labor movement across borders,
both in the EU and worldwide. (Undervisningsministeriet, 2007)
Manufacturing of goods is with the new globalized world and the era of technology no
longer politician’s main source of interest. Instead services and knowledge is the product
they rely on. To become one of the leading knowledge-societies a country needs to have
world class educations as well as providing all with the opportunity and will to learn new
and acquire useful qualifications and competences in life. (Undervisningsministeriet,
2007)
Even though a well informed public and highly educated citizens, arguably is a good
thing for all societies someone seems to pay a high price.
Young people leave their hometown, moving towards the university cities to obtain a
higher education. But instead of heading back home after graduation they have a ten-
dency to stay, leaving their native town behind. With an increased urbanization and a
lack of young settlers in the countryside the provinces starts to decay (Harbo, 2011). The
decrease in population leads to closing of schools, lessening of sports clubs and lack of
social events and community spirit.
Bringing young families back to the provincial parts of a country is essential to sustain
the live in the outskirts (Vordingborgs commune, 2009). A task which is impossible with-
out creating cheap affordable houses that fulfills the dreams of young families and follows
the trends of today, focusing especially on personal freedom and individuality (Kairos
Future, 2012).
This study looks at the increased centralization and urbanization occurring all over the
world, and the decline in small communities that follows the current development. Using
Vordingborg, a part of Denmark’s outskirts, as a case study enables a deeper understand-
ing of the political and cultural nature of the Danish society’s approach to handling the
current tendency. Within this framework a possible model for creating cheap and sus-
tainable homes is created which if adjusted can be considered a solution on a global scale.

Dimensions
Based on elements build out of standard ma-
terials there are created ‘mats’ of two differ-
ent sizes 1200mm x 1200mm and 1200mm x
2400mm, which is used for creating bearing
walls, facades, decking and the roof.
Placement
Using ‘mats’ as building parts, as the Japanese,
is very much like playing with LEGO, which
makes it possible for everyone to design their
own house. The pieces can be freely placed in
the order that fulfils ones desires.
Span
Internal structural elements are placed one el-
ement (1200mm) from the facade and four ele-
ments (4800mm) apart, enabling a non-bearing
facade. One can thereby play around with fa-
cade element and big windows without concern
of a building collapse.
Stability
Ensuring stability of the house is crucial and
is done by simply following one rule while plac-
ing the bearing parts - At least one out of three
structural elements has to be turned 90 degrees.

Freedom and personal expression follows the enabling of
choosing the pieces which together will form the home of
your dreams. The rural touch, highly regarded in the mod-
ern society is a natural part of the raw mats constructed by
kerto wood. The insulation is wood fiber eliminating the need
for a plastic vapor barrier.
Unlike all other parts of the building the internal non-bear-
ing walls do not oblige to the rule of 1200mm size, liberating
the design and placement of rooms and creation of space.
Skylights and windows can be dimensioned within the natu-
ral boundaries of the ‘mat’ to fulfil individual needs. A fully
windowed facade is a possibility with a non-bearing facade
and elements has been designed in a way so they fully sup-
port such a vision.

HOUSING EXAMPLE
The coming section shows an example of a house build with the described rules and elements created
to design cheap, temporary, sustainable homes for young people fulfilling their ideas of a rural expres-
sion, personal touch and freedom. The house is 113m2, a size that follows the current need of small
houses in Denmark (Kristensen H. & Andersen H. S., 2009)
A technical plan and section will along with two details show how such a house is put together.

QUESTIONING ZERO CARBON - EUSTON LONDON (2015)
Sustainable development is defined by the Brundtland commit tee (1987) as a devel-
opment that meets the need of today without jeopardizing the opportunities for future
generations. Even though sustainability today is mainly perceived as being taking care
of the environment, decreasing emitted CO2, sustainability equally includes economical
and social aspects.
Considering technical issues of a development such as the building envelope, external
shading, on site renewable resources, grey water systems and similar creates the frame-
work for a green, low carbon building. Combining it with simulation based evaluation
of wind, solar availability and daylight optimizes not just the low carbon aspects of the
construction, but also the micro climates in the interior and the outdoor space.
One might think that creating a development with low to zero carbon dwelling and offic-
es, simultaneously having pleasant affect on the exterior, and a clear strategy for the use
and type of housing would be enough to obtain a sustainable city. However, according to
Bioreginal and CABE (2008) a sustainable city is a place where it is easy for residents to
adopt a sustainable lifestyle, thereby not enough to provide a development as described.
As there are many different aspects of a development to consider in designing towards
carbon neutral developments, BioRegional has created the One Planet Living scheme, a
guideline consisting of 10 principles which, if all is obtained, will lead to a sustainable
development.
This report will focus on the One Planet Living strategy as a guideline to project a sus-
tainable concept, aiming towards designing an eco village, while “Eco villages will ideally
eliminate the use of fossil fuels” – Bioregional and CABE, What makes an eco-town?
(2008), for a low price with the people in mind.
Tre forskellige strategier blev evalueret. Udvalgt er metode afsnittet samt nogle illustra-
tioner og analalyser fra den semi-private strategi. Hele projektet kan ses på min hjemme-
side under Questioning Zero Carbon - Euston Station.

1. Research methodology
The coming sections consists of different strategies describing how a sustain-
able development can be established in the project area through various archi-
tectural visions from private, to semi-private and public.
The strategies are all designed from option based considerations using the One
Planet Living’s principles as a framework. Multiple tools, Ecotect, Vasari and
BRE Water Efficiency Calculator, are used to simulate internal and external
microclimates and water consumption.
While attempting to create a sustainable development the results of the soft-
wares are considered useful guidelines to determine suitable alternations to the
proposed design. Multiple simulations and twitchings of the design are carried
out before the final layout for the coming consepts are proposed.
The concepts will be be graded from 1 - 5, one being the lowest and five being
the highest, according to an evaluation of their performances in each of the 10
principles. Each of the 10 principles are seen having an equal value in the aim
of obtaining a sustaibable development. The most sustainable strategy will be
the one of the three that achieves the highest average grading.
The three strategies will as minimum need to provide 250 apartment of an
average size of 70m2 with additional 15% service area. 80% of the apartments
is affordable dwellings, 20% private. 15% are one bedroom flats, 60% of them
are two bedrooms flats and 25% three bedroom flats.
Furthermore the developments have to incorporate at least 5 retail or commer-
cial premises with a minimum area of 50m2 each.

Concept 2 - The Village
Vision: The designated project area is completely residential, which makes it
quiet. The concept of a village is a semi private approach that tries to connect
the community by having low-raised (4-floors) buildings spawning on the two
plots, creating a small town experience in the center of the city.
The area will consist of mainly residential units, with 250 apartments, and a
few (10x70m2) private businesses, with old fashioned professions. One of the
main focuses with the village is to create a strong community revolving around
close neighbourhood and common rooftop gardens.

REUSE AND RETHINK MILAN EXPO2015 – PAVILLIONS RELOADED (MILAN
2015)
Outline for the Workshop:
Re-making the temporary wooden structures of the Expo, the summer school inves-
tigates the possibility of disassemble the structures in pieces in the aim of re-assemble
them in different places and ways, manipulating their spaces parts and details.
The political aim of the workshop is achieved through offering a series of public admin-
istrations of the Milan neighbourhood the real possibility of inheriting for free a rede-
signed structure to act as a space for public use.
FLOW
Park de la Trucca today seems divided in two, with only one half taken into use by the vis-
itors. People are the ones bringing life and joy to the park attracted by spaces of interests.
With two light curved structures a new flow is created, bringing people from the greatly
used east side to the west, currently deserted, unifying the two parts of the park into one
whole. The Waves of Bergamo are a fragile monument a new landmark for Cittá Bassa.
The new structure´s shape allows people to flow along the waves, through the waves and,
over the waves, with possibilities for small and great events. A Reinterpretation of the
standard EXPO2015 frames, into new triangular structural element is what gives life to
the new Landmark. The Waves of Bergamo – A flow of life.

ST. JOHN’S GREEN (2015)
somhed Civic Architecture.

DYRK DIN BY!
med projektet “Dyrk Din By!”.
mens andre valgtes at rive ned.

solceller.
Længen; Rækkehuse i 3 etager.

facader, snit og detaljetegninger in AutoCAD.
