This document summarizes a study on ballast water management and potential risks of invasive species in ports of the Amazon Basin region of Brazil. The researchers analyzed ballast water reporting forms from ships arriving at the Port of Santana on the Amazon River from July 2012 to January 2013. They found errors and inconsistencies in the forms, indicating some ships did not properly exchange their ballast water in the mid-ocean as required. Biological samples from the ballast water of inspected ships contained live organisms and high salinity levels, violating laws for discharge into the Amazon ports. The researchers concluded authorities need more effective processes to evaluate ballast water reporting forms to reduce risks of future exotic species invasions in Brazilian ports.
