The 'Hamamelis cultivar names checklist 2014' assembles all officially registrated cultivar names of which hazels, Hamamelis. The author is Abraham Rammeloo, curator of Arboretum Kalmthout in Belgium. Arboretum Kalmthout is part of a world-wide network of International Cultivar Registration Authorities (ICRA) which play a vital role in promoting uniformity, accuracy and stability in the naming of cultivated plants. This checklist is compiled with the help of Chris Lane (UK), Wim van der Werf (NL), Tim Brotzman (USA) and Holger Konrad (DE).
3. Checklist
of cultivar names
This checklist assembles all cultivar names of witch hazels, Hamamelis. It is a live
document to which additions and/or changes will be made continuously. The official
registration of Hamamelis cultivar names started in 2003. Since then only very few
have actively registered or provided information on new names. In order to obtain
completeness, names for which no application is made are added to the checklist.
Widespread spelling mistakes and synonyms are also included.
This checklist is a register of cultivar names. There is no judgment on the actual
qualities of each cultivar.
This checklist is compiled with the help of my good friend Chris Lane (UK), author of
the Royal Horticultural Society’s Plant Collector Guide Witch Hazels. Other persons
who contributed to the realization of this publication are Wim van der Werf (NL), Tim
Brotzman (USA) and Holger Konrad (DE).

4. International network of registration authorities
Arboretum Kalmthout is part of a world-wide
network of International Cultivar Registration
Authorities (ICRA) which play a vital role in
promoting uniformity, accuracy and stability in
the naming of cultivated plants. It is a non-statu-
tory, voluntary process which benefits the whole
horticultural community. ICRA are appointed by
the International Society for Horticultural Science
through its Commission for Nomenclature and
Registration.
Since 2003 Arboretum Kalmthout is the interna-
tional registrar for cultivar names of Hamamelis.
It has been reappointed in 2013 at the executive
committee of the International Society of Horticul-
tural Science in Beijing.
Most important horticultural genera are covered
by an ICRA and a full list of these can be found as
Appendix II of the International Code of Nomen-
clature for Cultivated Plants - 1995.

Naming of new cultivars
When naming new cultivars of Hamamelis one
should always subscribe the regulations of the
International Code of Nomenclature of Cultivated
Plants (ICNCP).
Before giving a plant a new cultivar name one
should make sure that this ‘new’ form is enough
distinct compared with the already existing
cultivars. Although it is not a requirement, it is
strongly recommended that the proposed cultivar
be in some way superior to existing cultivars.
Why name a plant that is inferior to the already
available? Also be sure that the plant’s character is
stable and constant.
It is recommended that the cultivar be propagated
and available commercially, or at least that it be
propagated and distributed to someone other than
the originator. This is to prohibit the naming of
what is essentially a single individual plant; that
is, a plant that will never be propagated, and which
may be lost over time.
Brief recommendations of
the code of nomenclature
›› The name is preferably logic to one of
the characteristics of the plant.
›› The name should, preferably, consist of one or
two words and not more than three. An arbitrary
sequence of letters, an abbreviation or a numer-
al is counted as a word.
›› In selecting names, distinctiveness, simplicity,
ease of pronunciation and spelling should be
taken into consideration.
›› Avoid names containing excessively long words
or phrases.
›› Do not name a Witch Hazel solely by the name
of another genus, such as ‘Rose’. An acceptable
form would be ‘Henry’s Rose’ or ‘Rose Queen’.
›› Use of hybridizers, originator’s name or a series
name is discouraged.
›› Avoid names including the word ‘variety’
(or ‘var.’) or ‘form’. Do not use the abbreviation
var. for variegated, to avoid confusion with
variety. Do not use the words ‘Selection’ or
‘Select’ in a cultivar’s name.
›› The name must be a “fancy” name, in a modern
language. Cultivar names such as ‘Alba’, are
no longer acceptable as they were in the past.
So do not use Latin or Latinised words, use the
common language. ‘Pendula’ should be ‘Weep-
ing’ and ‘Kalmthoutania’ should be ‘Kalmthout’.
›› Names containing an initial article should be
avoided, unless required by linguistic custom.
Not ‘The Colonel’ but ‘Colonel’. On the other
hand, not ‘Rochelle’ but ‘La Rochelle’.
›› Avoid names that exaggerate the merits of
the variety or which may become inaccurate
through the introduction of new varieties
or other circumstances, such as ‘Largest’,
‘Latest’, etc. …
›› Avoid names which refer to some attribute
common or likely to become common, such as,
not ‘Yellow’ but ‘Yellow Queen’, etc. …
›› Avoid names likely to become confused with
existing names such as ‘Beatrice’ and ‘Beatrix’,
‘Helen’, ‘Helene’, ‘Helena’ and ‘Elen’ except
when the surname follows, ‘Darwin’ and
‘Charles Darwin’. etc. …
›› When a cultivar name has been translated
into another language it is preferably left
unchanged. Personal names should not be
translated. ‘Charles’ should not be translated to
‘Karl’ or vice versa, etc. …
5. The names printed in bold are accepted cultivar names.
If known, the hybridizer and the year of introduction are given for accepted names.
