The presentation explored ways to enrich Mandarin instruction in a meaningful context at elementary schools. Participants of the session responded to a list of questions to discuss possible connections they could make across different subjects in planning instruction. Development of language and content can be supported through use of visuals including appropriate pictures familiar to students’ life experience or background. Key vocabulary are selected and labeled to make sound-character connection and facilitate communication/discussion of standard-based content in a visually rich context. Students are also guided to express their critical thinking and understanding by applying key words presented or labeled in context. Subjects such as math and science are integrated in supporting language and content development to enhance Mandarin teaching.
