KCDC 2018 - Rapid API Development with SailsJustin James
Creating a RESTful API should be the easiest part of your development. You should not have to be a rocket scientist to successfully create a RESTful API. With Sails, you can create a full featured RESTful API in just a few minutes without writing any code. You get create, destroy, update, find, paginate, sort, and filtering out of the box. If you need to add your business logic to any of the methods or create your own methods, you can do that by writing simple JavaScript functions. Once you are ready to implement security, Sails provides policies that can be applied to any REST action to implement email/password, social login or Windows authentication. For data storage, Sails bundles the power ORM, Waterline, which provides a simple data access layer that just works, no matter which one of the more than 30 data storage providers you are using.
This talk will be code heavy as we walk through getting started with Sails and demonstrate how to implement the features of Sails through the creation of an API. As well, I will share the tips and tricks that I have learned using Sails at a Fortune 100 company. You will walk away understanding how and why you should use Sails on your next project. All code covered in the talk with be immediately available for download.

The Strange World of Javascript and all its little Asynchronous BeastsFederico Galassi
Javascript is a wonderland populated by all kinds of exotic beasts. Callbacks, events, promises, functional programming, reactive programming, streams, generators are all part of this incredible asynchronous bestiary. We’re talking of insidious or even ferocious things, a great danger to the unwary programmer. Let’s look at them, learn from them, tame them and finally put them to our own advantage. Let’s stop Javascript from being an unfamiliar place and make it feel much more like home.
Talk I held on 14/05/2014 at JsDay, Verona, Italy. Corrected slides.

A real-world example of Functional Programming with fp-ts - no experience req...Frederick Fogerty
In this talk I'll walk through a real-world Javascript project and discussing how we can refactor it to a more functional style using a TS library, fp-ts.
Should I Use CoffeeScript? The Pros and Cons of Working With JavaScript’s Ori...Morris Singer
When starting a new web development project, it can be challenging to decide whether transpiling from JavaScript to CoffeeScript is a good or a bad choice. This presentation reviews some of the many benefits of transpiling in general, including strong typing, asynchronous support, modules, classical inheritance, and more. It then assesses how CoffeeScript stacks up against some of its competitors, including ECMAScript6, Dart, Haxe, TypeScript, Opal, PyJS.
A brief introduction to the world of drones, flying robots and the #nodecopter project. I've presented this work at events such as Research Talks, Wajug, Njugbe, Café Numérique, etc.
If you would like to have this presentation featured at one of your events, don't hesitate to contact me by email.

Home sensor prototype on Arduino & Raspberry Pi with Node.JSHyunghun Cho
This slide shows the steps to make home temperature & humidity sensor using two famous open source H/Ws (Arduino & Raspberry Pi) with Node.JS the server side JavaScript framework.
By now you have heard about Flash Augmented Reality and how it is taking the Flash Development community by storm! Whether you are looking for how to get started, how to improve your own experiments or have a client who desperately needs AR on their site, this session is for you.
In this keynote I cover getting up and running as well as the ideal workflow for testing/deploying your creation. I also cover the basics then quickly move into how to build a FLAR Emulator for easy testing/debugging as well as general usability/performance issues. Finally we will look at my own experiments with AR, how they were built and highlight some of the best uses of Flash AR today.
The goal of this presentation is to teach you how to build a solid reusable foundation for all of your Flash AR projects which will allow you to quickly prototype your ideas. All code covered in this session is open source and free to use. Documentation on how it works will also be handed out as well.
Meteor Deep Dive – Reactive Programming With Tracker
As a Meteor developer, I believe that everyone who has worked with Meteor all had experience with Tracker, or at least used it through some kinds of interfaces like getMeteordata or createContainer which come with the react-meteor-data package.
However, not all people know how Tracker works its magic. In this post, I’m going to dig into every facet of this case as well as bring to you a little bit of background knowledge.
A year ago, I was a committed VPS and dedicated-machine deployer. I thought the cloud imposed silly restrictions - how dare you take away my shell account! Whaddya mean I can't save files locally? Since then, I've had some interesting experiences. I've worked on big cloud-deployed systems, and certain large traditionally-deployed systems, and I've seen how a lot of the decisions that you're ... encouraged to make when designing an app to run in the cloud. Most interestingly, I've discovered how those same decisions can make for a much better app regardless of where it'll end up. In this talk, I'll share those architectural patterns with you, and show why they work. Hopefully, I'll convince all of you to build cloud castles -- even if you've got your foundation firmly on the ground.

Securing your Kubernetes cluster_ a step-by-step guide to success !KatiaHIMEUR1
Today, after several years of existence, an extremely active community and an ultra-dynamic ecosystem, Kubernetes has established itself as the de facto standard in container orchestration. Thanks to a wide range of managed services, it has never been so easy to set up a ready-to-use Kubernetes cluster.
However, this ease of use means that the subject of security in Kubernetes is often left for later, or even neglected. This exposes companies to significant risks.
In this talk, I'll show you step-by-step how to secure your Kubernetes cluster for greater peace of mind and reliability.
Kubernetes & AI - Beauty and the Beast !?! @KCD Istanbul 2024Tobias Schneck
As AI technology is pushing into IT I was wondering myself, as an “infrastructure container kubernetes guy”, how get this fancy AI technology get managed from an infrastructure operational view? Is it possible to apply our lovely cloud native principals as well? What benefit’s both technologies could bring to each other?
Let me take this questions and provide you a short journey through existing deployment models and use cases for AI software. On practical examples, we discuss what cloud/on-premise strategy we may need for applying it to our own infrastructure to get it to work from an enterprise perspective. I want to give an overview about infrastructure requirements and technologies, what could be beneficial or limiting your AI use cases in an enterprise environment. An interactive Demo will give you some insides, what approaches I got already working for real.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
