5. W E LCO M E
Thank you for purchasing the 2013 Where to Turn Plus!
Resource Center staff from King County 2-1-1 (previously the Community Information Line) have
been creating Where to Turn directories for more than 25 years! Initially targeted to professionals
in social services, our readership has grown to include students, library patrons, receptionists,
firefighters, police officers, therapists and human resource managers–anyone who encounters
people in need. Knowing where to turn for information about financial assistance, food resources,
shelter,andothersocialservicesisimportant.Beingabletorelyontheaccuracyofthatinformation
is critical. King County 2-1-1 will continue to step up to the challenge and provide you with tools
to meet this need, including our redesigned set of Where to Turn directories for 2013.
The original source of directory information is the King County portion of the statewide 2-1-1
Community Resources Online (CRO) database, which is available at www.WA211.org. Resource
Center staff ensures the information is accurate by actively pursuing updates from agency
contacts, attending meetings, reading newsletters and following up on tips from callers. This
sophisticated database is also used by our professional 2-1-1 Information & Referral Specialists in
order to provide the highest quality referrals in King County, tailored to the unique circumstances
of each caller. If you are unable to locate the information or resource needed in the directory or
online, you can call and talk with an Information & Referral Specialist who may be able to help.
King County 2-1-1 hours are Monday-Friday, 8am-6pm.
To make the most of this resource, bookmark our Resource Talk Blog (www.resourcetalk.
crisisclinic.org) or subscribe to the Resource Talk Blog email (www.crisisclinic.org/education/
resource-talk-enewsletter). New information about agencies, services and events is posted
daily, and it is advised that you use the updates on the blog to make notes in this directory when
you come across information that has changed.
Where to Turn directories are designed to be an effective reference tool and we strive to make
them as user friendly as possible. Once you’ve become familiar with your directory, please take
a moment to respond to our survey. With your input, we’ll be able to make future Where to Turn
directory editions even more helpful. The survey will be emailed to you shortly after you receive
your order. Our goal at King County 2-1-1 is to provide the community with the most accurate
and up-to-date information and to make finding that information as easy as possible.
Your community partner,
Ryan Peterson
Resource Center Supervisor

6. King County 2-1-1 and Specialized Services
Do you need local resources to help you:
• Pay the rent and feed your family?
• Care for a loved one with disabilities?
• Find in-home care services?
• Find emergency housing?
• Enroll in a computer class?
• Obtain dental or health care services?
• Acquire legal or civil rights assistance?
King County 2-1-1 provides expert assistance to people seeking information about community resources. Using a
database of more than 6,000 King County services, Information and Referral Specialists can explain how social service
systems work, coach callers on how to access community resources and recommend the agencies best able to help.
Bed Bank
The Bed Bank offers current information on open shelter space at participating local domestic violence shelters.
Information is verified once each day and available M-F, after 9:30am.
Caregiver Information and Assistance Program
Assists unpaid caregivers, ages 18 and older, in identifying and clarifying needs, locating resources and finding
support related to caring for an adult, age 18 or older, with a disability or illness. Our Caregiver Specialist provides
in-depth support to informal caregivers living in King County who have complex, urgent needs not being met
by other providers. Services include care consultation, long-term care planning, advocacy, links to resources and
follow-up support. This program has funding available to provide short-term respite services in the home or
community for caregivers with emergency needs.
Civil Legal Referrals
King County 2-1-1 is designated as the entry point for screening and referrals for those seeking free or low-cost
civil legal services.
Community Resources Online (CRO)
The online version of our database is part of a statewide directory of community resources. The search engine lists
up-to-date resources, searchable by topic, geographic area, keyword and agency name. www.WA211.org
Disability Information and Assistance Program
Our Disability Program Specialist is able to help people who are age 18 or over, reside in King County, live
independent of a full-time caregiver, and have a more complex situation related to their disability or who may
need extra assistance in getting connected to a service provider. We work closely with many disability providers
and often know which services are most effective.
Emergency Services Brochures and Ex-Offender Re-entry Packets
King County 2-1-1 offers downloadable brochures on our website to help connect people with the most critical
services in King County. Brochures are updated at least three times per year and often more frequently. The date
of the last update is printed on the front of the brochure. Re-entry Packets provide information on resources for
anyone currently under supervision by the criminal justice system including anyone with a sex offense on his or her
record, as well as anyone experiencing a barrier to a basic need due to a prior conviction or record. Since updates
occur regularly, we suggest printing one item at a time or only printing small batches.
Resource Talk Blog and Newsletter
The Resource Talk blog is the social service news destination for King County and we update it with new resources
and information almost every day. It is searchable by keyword or date and provides critical resource changes,
community events, feature articles on important health and human service topics and updates to the annual
publication of the Where to Turn directory. Subscribe to the blog and get bi-monthly emails with links to the
most critical social service changes and events in King County at http://crisisclinic.org/education/resource-talk-
enewsletter. Access previous information at http://resourcetalk.crisisclinic.org.
