Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office
Drayton man charged with criminal sexual conduct
with a minor
A Drayton man has been charged with second-
degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor age 11 to
14, according to an incident report.
Christopher Earl Sanders, 29, of 114
River St., is accused of having sexual
intercourse with a 12-year-old on two
separate occasions between Nov. 1 and
Dec. 6, according to an arrest warrant.
The 12-year-old’s mother told the
sheriff’s office she noticed unusual
text messages between her daughter
and Sanders. The incident report states
that Sanders admitted to having sexual
intercourse with the 12-year-old at his house and admit-
ted he knew her age.
Sanders remained at the Spartanburg County Deten-
tion Center on $20,000 bond Tuesday afternoon.
◆
Five catalytic converters were stolen from a used car
dealership on Highway 101 in Greer.
According to an incident report, a deputy responded
to All Right Auto Sales at 1973 Highway 101 South on
Monday and found that the catalytic converters, valued
at $650 each, were cut off from five parked vehicles.
The thefts are believed to have occurred sometime
between Saturday afternoon and Monday morning,
according to the report.
The vehicles targeted were a 2000 Ford Explorer,
a 2000 Honda Accord, a 2003 Honda Odyssey, a 2001
Honda Accord and a 2004 Toyota Sequoia.
No suspects were listed on the report.

Charleston is struggling to
meet a previously set target
of three jets a month. It has
delivered just 12 planes so
farthisyear,comparedwith
47 for the two 787 assembly
lines in Everett.
Still, North Charles-
ton Mayor Keith Summey
believes his city and Boe-
ing will prosper in tandem,
noting South Carolina’s
hospitable business cul-
ture. Summey said he does
not know if Boeing will
make good on its threat to
take the 777X project out
of the Puget Sound area
after being rebuffed by the
Machinists. But he does
not blame the company for
looking elsewhere.
“Boeing’s first respon-
sibility is to the sharehold-
ers,” Summey said. “The
loyalty factor is a two-way
street.”
more than a dollar each
year. But after six years,
the contract pay scale —
which skews in favor of
seniority — jumps to $36.89
an hour.
North Charleston work-
ers join and integrate the
Dreamliner’s rear and
middle fuselage. The com-
pleted body sections are
moved one building over to
the North Charleston final-
assembly line or flown to
Everett.
Boeing recently broke
ground on a plant to design
and assemble engine inlets
for the 737 MAX that will
be built in Renton. Nearby,
in the Palmetto Commerce
Park, Boeing has an interi-
ors center to make bins and
other cabin parts for the
787.
Next year, Boeing will
build an on-site paint facil-
ity so finished Dreamlin-
ers won’t need to be flown
to Fort Worth, Texas, for
a final coat before deliv-
the docks on the Cooper
River.
Last Friday, a long-
sought acquisition of 267
acres of land surrounding
the current 787 campus was
sealed. Palmetto Railways,
an arm of the South Caro-
lina Commerce Depart-
ment, bought it from the
local airport authority for
$13.8 million for Boeing’s
use. The state also tapped
public bonds to acquire
two patches of private land
totaling 201 acres for long-
term lease to Boeing.
The company will get
a purchase option on the
combined 468 acres in
2027, which would triple its
current footprint. Should it
need more room, the air-
port authority has 488 more
acres nearby.
In all, Boeing could gain
access to more than 1,200
acres. What the jet-maker
has planned for all that dirt,
it won’t say.

Sheriff’s office:
Suspect pointed
gun at deputy
Colleton County sher-
iff’s officials say a 17-year-
old shot and wounded by a
deputy had pointed a gun at
the officer.
Officials say the deputy
had tried to pull over the
teen shortly after 2 a.m.
Sunday for making an
improper turn. A sheriff’s
report says the driver did
not stop and the deputy
chased him.
Officials say Kareem T.
Risher of Smoaks pointed
a gun at the deputy after
stopping and running from
the car.
The deputy fired three
times, hitting Risher in the
buttocks. He was taken to
the Medical University of
South Carolina in Charles-
ton for treatment. He was
listed in stable condition.
The deputy has been
suspended while the State
Law Enforcement Division
investigates the shooting.
Intruder killed;
homeowner shot
AndersonCountyauthor-
ities say a home invasion
near Piedmont has left the
intruder dead and the hom-
eowner injured.
Coroner Greg Shore said
a 39-year-old Williamston
man was dead on arrival at
Greenville Memorial Hos-
pital from a gunshot wound
to the chest Monday night.
Sheriff’s Lt. Sheila Cole
said a 78-year-old hom-
eowner was shot in the

condition following surgery
at the hospital. The man’s
wife was at home and was
not injured.

South Carolina’s Most Honored Charity and Largest Animal Rescue Organization
January Rescue of the Month
Macy arrived at the Animal Society with
severe burns on her back legs from the
knees down. She lost nearly all of the
skin on her legs. After we performed 15
surgeries to repair her legs and two skin
grafts along with additional procedures,
Macy recovered and became quite the diva.
She was then adopted by a loving family
and given a second chance at life.
July Rescue of the Month
Miss Margaret entered our doors with a
severely wounded eye. Our surgeons were
able to remove her eye and stop her suffering.
Today, she can be found backstage with her
daddy during rehearsals of ballets, concerts
and international productions! Every July,
Miss Margaret arrives in her daddy’s backpack
bearing sweet treats for Charleston Animal
Society staff and volunteers.
April Rescue of the Month
Nell, an adorable kitten, was rescued
on the Ravenel Bridge! Brought to the
Animal Society by rescue personnel,
Nell suffered from a broken leg. Our
veterinarians repaired her and she spent
a number of weeks healing in foster care.
Nell came out of foster care with flying
colors and was adopted immediately.
October Rescue of the Month
This tiny 8-week old kitten came to us with
a severely injured and open fractured front
paw. After emergency surgery and intensive
recovery in foster care, this little one is making
incredible progress towards a full recovery.
She was even featured in a local book and is an
inspiration for the thousands of animals who
are saved through the Animal Society’s foster
family network.
August Rescue of the Month
Assumed dead, Charlie Brown was starving,
missing hair over most of his body and
suffering from an apparent gunshot wound
when he was rushed to us by a Good
Samaritan. After extensive treatment for
his severe infections and starvation, Charlie
Brown recovered and was found a loving
home by his foster mom.
February Rescue of the Month
Izzy came to us with compound fractures
in her right rear leg. Her injuries were
so severe, she was sent to an orthopedic
specialist for corrective surgery. After
more than three months of recovery, Izzy
was ready for adoption. She now lives
in a home by the marsh with her human
family and her canine brother Monty.
May Rescue of the Month
Tiny Hearts Kitten Safety Net Program
Over 3,000 un-weened kittens and puppies
(mostly kittens) arrived at our animal care
facility last year. Too young and sometimes
too sick to go up for adoption, these young
animals require intense attention and
medication to help them survive. Foster
homes are the lifeblood of our shelter and
have helped us to save more lives than ever
before in our history.
November Rescue of the Month
Honey Bee was nearly dead when she was
brought to us. Attacked by another dog,
she was in shock and extreme pain. A
life-threatening infection had set into her
wounds. This adorable puppy underwent
several surgeries and honey was used to
help heal her wounds, inspiring her name.
Honey Bee eventually recovered and
couldn’t have asked for more love from
her new family.
March Rescue of the Month
An elderly woman and her daughter were
making their yearly trek to Florida with their
three cats when they lost control of their vehicle
leading to a serious accident. They found two
of their beloved cats but Spencer was nowhere
to be found. After weeks of looking they gave
up hope and returned home. Spencer was later
found dehydrated and starved, then rushed to
us. After rendering emergency care, our staff
found his family and reunited them.
September Rescue of the Month
Muddy Waters was found suffering and
stuck in pluff mud. His matted hair was the
worst our veterinarians and staff had ever
seen. After nearly three hours of grooming,
under sedation, he transformed back into a
beautiful poodle and underwent rehabilitation
and treatment for skin issues. He is now the
cock of the walk in his new home.
June Rescue of the Month
Polly Pocket was hit by a car and rushed
to the Animal Society. Her eye was
lost and she suffered from neurological
damage which adversely impacted her
balance. After surgery on her eye and
weeks of treatment and recovery, she
became the perfect companion for a new
man in her life.
December Rescue of the Month
Penelope, a tiny Chihuahua, was found
wandering down a country road. Her
ear had been completely torn off and she
was in severe pain. Her wounds were so
infected that our veterinarians immediately
performed emergency surgery. After
heartworm treatment and rehabilitation,
involving five surgeries and months of
intensive care, Penelope is now living with
two other Chihuahuas and new family.

Officials found the bombs
consisted of explosives put in
common 1.6-gallon pressure
cookers, one containing shards
of metal and ball bearings,
the other packed with nails,
according to a person close to
the investigation who spoke
on condition of anonym-
ity because the probe was still
going on. Both bombs were
stuffed into duffel bags, the
person said.
At a news conference, Rich-
ard DesLauriers, FBI agent in
charge in Boston, confirmed
investigators found pieces
of black nylon from a bag or
backpack and fragments of
BBs and nails, possibly con-
tained in a pressure cooker. He
said the items were sent to the
FBI for analysis at Quantico,
Va.
Pressure-cooker explosives
have been used in interna-
tional terrorism, and were
recommended for lone-wolf
operatives by Al-Qaida’s
branch in Yemen. But infor-
mation on how to make
the bombs is readily found
online, and U.S. officials said
Americans should not rush
to judgment in linking the
attack to overseas terrorists.
DesLauriers said there
were no claim of responsi-
bility for the attack, and the
range of suspects and motives
“remains wide open.”
Throughout the day, he
and other law enforcement
as hearing someone express
an interest in explosives or
a desire to attack the mara-
thon, or seeing someone car-
rying a dark heavy bag at the

Associated Press
BOSTON — Neighbors and
friends remembered 8-year-
old Boston Marathon bomb-
ing victim Martin Richard as a
vivacious boy who loved to run,
climb and play sports like soc-
cer, basketball and baseball.
Family friend Jack Cunning-
ham spoke Tuesday of how, as
a pint-sized preschooler, Mar-
tin insisted on getting out of a
stroller his mom was pushing
during a 5K race in South Bos-
ton.
Once she let him out to run
with the rest of the family, Mar-
tin had other plans for the rainy
race course.
“He was just having a ball,
splashing in every puddle,”
Cunningham said.
The boy’s father, Bill Richard,
released a statement thanking
family, friends and strangers for
their support following his son’s
death Monday. Richard’s wife,
Denise, and the couple’s 6-year-
old daughter, Jane, also suffered
significant injuries in the blasts.
“My dear son Martin has
died from injuries sustained in
the attack on Boston,” Richard
said. “My wife and daughter are
both recovering from serious
injuries. We thank our family
and friends, those we know and
those we have never met, for
their thoughts and prayers. I
ask that you continue to pray
for my family as we remember
Martin.”
Other friends remembered
Martin as a happy boy who was
often outside playing with his
sister, older brother Henry and
other neighborhood kids.
The Richard family was
watching Monday’s race, and
hadgonetogeticecreambefore
returning to the area near the
finish line before the blasts.
“They were looking in the
crowd as the runners were
coming to see if they could
identify some of their friends
when the bomb hit,” said U.S.
Rep. Stephen Lynch, a friend of
the family for 25 years.
He said they are a strong
family and are doing better than
expected, while rallying around
the 6-year-old girl.

“That was a completely dif-
ferent time,” he said. “It was
more kinetic, more firefights.
It was just a lot more Taliban
in the area, I guess you would
say. So, we were in engage-
ments very often. It was a lot
more stressful, a lot more dif-
ficult living environment last
(time) compared to this year.
It’s a lot easier to call on them
this year.”
That was two years ago,
on Richards’ first mission to
train soldiers in the Afghan
National Army. Now, an
assistant patrol leader head-
ing up a team of three fellow
Marines, Richards returned to
Marjah last October, and said
he has seen a decisive shift in
the competence of the Afghan
army.
“The last time I was here,
and they had no leadership,
no structure, no type of mili-
tary built up at all compared
to this time, where they have
that,” he said. “Now, we’re not
really focused on doing any-
thing on our own anymore as
the Marine Corp. We’re not
here running our own opera-
tions. We’re here to assist the
Afghan National Army to run
their operations. And kind of
help them build their military
back up.”
That’s in stark contrast to
2010, when U.S. troops and
war-torn agricultural village
then. On one occasion, in
the midst of a firefight with
enemy forces, he was unwit-
tingly lying next to an explo-
sive device hidden in the
sand. He only became aware
of the IED after a bomb-sniff-
ing military dog alerted him
to the danger.
On that first campaign,
Richards said his unit led the
Afghan National Security
Forces the entire time. Now
the ANA carries out its own
security operations, and only
calls on the American forces
if they need them.
“They didn’t lead their own
patrols, we led them,” he said.
“This year, they go out on
their own. ... If they do get
any type of fight, they usually
get themselves out of it and
take care of it.”
While Richards is busy
goes to sleep.
“You can only hope that
God’s with him and watching
him,” Tyler said. “But to see
him be a part of that coun-
try, maybe turning one of the
worst areas of Afghanistan
around, it makes you proud.
It makes you beam with joy
that your child is a part of
that, and that he wanted to
do that.”
Tyler said she told family
members, when Richards was
young, that he was going to
be a Marine. Then, while a
student at Ninety Six High
School, he came to his parents
and told them he planned to
sign up for the Marine Corps.
“When Blake was very
young, there was just some-
thing very different about
him,” she said. “He just had
such a high moral integrity.
He was a man at 5-year-old. ...
discipline him for his future.
“It’s great because, I mean,
it’s like anything in this life-
time,” he said. “If you put
time and effort into it, and on
the flip side you see that it has
changed and you have bet-
tered somebody’s life or bet-
tered somebody’s situation,
it’s always rewarding.”

TRAGEDY
Bobby faced the deaths
weak,” Bobby stated. “So
he sent me to Charlotte
to see a nerve specialist
who did a muscle biopsy.
He told me I had Post Po-
lio Progressive Atrophy,
which is a later stage of
him, however, was start-
ing on the night shift early
in his career, and eventu-
ally moving to the first
shift. The change allowed
him to help his brother
Danny, who was coach-
being worked on,” he said
with a laugh.
As soon as he was fully
taped up, Bobby returned
to the chains and finished
the game. Afterward, he
went to a hospital in Kings
Mountain to receive six
stitches.
“It was the first time in
my 57 years involved that
I had to go to the ER after
a football game,” Bobby
said.
Since retiring, Bobby
has been helping his
brother Gene build racing
engines in Spartanburg.
Gene is a local legend in
the drag racing circuit,
as he’s a member of the
North Carolina Drag Rac-
ing Hall of Fame and the
Thunder Valley Speedway
Hall of Fame in Bristol,
BLACKSBURG
MEMORIES
For Bobby Fulton, his
involvement with Blacks-
burg athletics has pro-
duced endless amounts of
joy.
Bobby had five chil-
dren – four girls and one
boy – who all played at
BHS. One of his daugh-
ters, Mary, was part of the
back-to-back state cham-
pionship basketball teams
in 1990 and 1991.
Because of that, he
continues his relationship
with the girls basketball
program to this day, in-
cluding taking them out
for pizza every year.
Bobby said he’s en-
joyed working with all
the coaches and athletes
that have come through
where Love’s Truck Stop
is now. I’m really proud
of that. Of course, I can’t
prove I did it. I didn’t take
any pictures or anything.
But it happened.”
And as classmates re-
turn this weekend for Bob-
by’s 55th class reunion, he
hopes he has many more
years at Blacksburg still
to go.
“Between my artificial
knee and my polio leg, I’ll
do this as long as I can,”
he said. “I still love doing
it. You’re part of the offi-
ciating crew – the referees
even tell you to act like it
and not holler and scream
for Blacksburg during the
game. And you also feel
like you’re part of the
team. Because you are.
You really are.”
to morbidity and mortality.”
“It is utterly important that Limestone
College and the City of Gaffney work
closely together for the betterment of
one and all,” the Limestone president
said. “A mutual partnership is vital to the
steady improvement of our area.”
In addition, the college is in the pro-
cess of developing a $40,000 grant appli-
cation to the state that could be used for
a fitness trial around the new 3-acre park
owned by the City of Gaffney. Next to
the new county administration building.
City Council forwarded the request to
the Finance Committee for further study
but some councilmen felt optimistic
about the project. “I think a 3-mile fit-
ness trail from the college to the Mill
Village is a great thing for the city and
would be utilized by our citizens,” said
Billy Love.
“I know I would use it, and I feel oth-
ers would, too. This first phase would be
a good start.”

Fairfield Central Dillon
Dillon at a Glance:
Interesting Fact:
Three coaches with Fairfield ties will be
vying for titles this weekend. In addition to
Demetrius Davis, Dr. Jerry Brown’s Bates-
burg-Leesville Panthers go for the 2A/
D2 crown in tonight’s early game, while
former FCHS head man Reggie Kennedy
takes his Sumter Gamecocks up against
Dutch Fork for the 4A/D1 title Saturday.
The Jackie Hayes Era:
Since taking the helm for the Wildcats in
1992, Dillon head coach Jackie Hayes has
never had a losing season. Only twice – in
his inaugural season and again in 2000 –
has he had less than 10 wins. Dillon went
8-4 in those cases. Hayes is 249-50 in his
career at Dillon, for an .833 win percent-
age. He has won Class 2A state titles in
2008, 2009 and 2012.

Full disclosure — I was born and raised
Catholic. I'm a practicing Catholic. Rush is
not a Catholic, but he is respectful of different
faiths.
What the pope did was to question the
sacred cows of trickle-down economics and
unregulated markets:
"Some people continue to defend trickle-
down theories which assume that economic
growth, encouraged by a free market, will inev-
itably succeed in bringing about greater justice
and inclusiveness in the world," Francis said.
"This opinion, which has never been con-
firmed by the facts, expresses a crude and
naive trust in the goodness of those wielding
economic power. Meanwhile, the excluded are
still waiting."
cedes-Benz 350M-Class, in favor of a 1984
Renault 4 economy car with 186,000 miles,
given him by a 70-year-old priest.
But maybe he knows the difference and
doesn't care about labels or $100 million
contracts. Maybe he believes faith is more
important than entertainment, respect is
more important than satire, and that more
important than tweaking others is helping the
poor, the sick and the needy.
There's no maybe, and those of us in the
media should think about that.

Theconventionalwisdom
remains that Griffin will be
under center on Sept. 9.
BILLS: The Buffalo Bills have
signed center Eric Wood to a
contract extension.
The new deal is for four years,
a person familiar with the
negotiations told The Associated
Press. The person spoke on the
condition of anonymity because
the Bills did not announce the
terms of the pact Friday.
Wood, 27, is Buffalo’s best
offensive lineman and is one of
the team’s most valued leaders.
Selected 28th overall in 2009,
Wood has started all 47 games
played with the Bills.
It was vital that the Bills lock up
their top offensive lineman after
one of Wood’s former teammates,
guard Andy Levitre, left in free
agency. Levitre signed a six-
year, $46.8 million contract with
Tennessee in March.
Also Friday, quarterback Matt
53-man roster limit.
Jacksonville released or waived
12 veterans: receiver Jeremy
Ebert, defensive end Pannel
Egboh, running back Jonathan
Grimes, linebacker Brandon
Marshall, receiver Charly Martin,
offensive lineman Pat McQuistan,
guard Drew Nowak, cornerback
Kevin Rutland, defensive tackle
D’Anthony Smith, linebacker Julian
Stanford and cornerback Marcus
Trufant.
PANTHERS: If Carolina’s defense
continues to play like it has in the
preseason, the Panthers could be
in for one heck of a year.
The Panthers intercepted rookie
quarterback Landry Jones three
times Thursday night in a 25-10
win over the Pittsburgh Steelers to
finish 3-1 in the preseason.
Carolina finished the exhibition
schedule with 13 takeaways and
four defensive touchdowns.
“We have to continue to work on it
and understand just how important
it is to get the ball,” Panthers coach
Ron Rivera said.
of having a healthy Jon Beason
and Thomas Davis play alongside
middle linebacker Luke Kuechly,
who might be on the verge of
becoming the league’s best middle
linebacker. Kuechly led the league
in tackles last season and if you
haven’t seen him play yet, you’re
missing something special.
4. TED GINN JR. COULD GIVE
A BOOST: Ginn was a cheap
acquisition for the Panthers
this offseason but he’s already
showing he has what it takes to
be a playmaker. He sparked the
Panthers to wins in their final two
preseason games with a 74-yard
punt return against Baltimore and
two TD catches against Pittsburgh,
including an 87-yarder bomb from
Derek Anderson.
5. PANTHERS DEEPER: Depth
has been a concern for years with
the Panthers, but they seem to be
more talented overall than in recent
seasons. Carolina’s success in the
preseason has proven that out as
they’ve been able to hold on to win
preseason games in the second
half.
