This is one of 4 Lightning Talks held Thurs Oct 24th at Netspeed 2013 held in Calgary, AB. Using my personal credo of "experiment, play, make mistakes, use technology now because it will change tomorrow" I discuss my experience experimenting with emerging technology in my library system - the ups and downs, pros and cons. I provide some tips as well as tools for selecting software for creating your own QR Codes. I challenge you to create your own QR Code, and let me know how it goes!

Thank you UofL ;)\nHow did I do it? With the help of my colleagues of course.\nCreated proposal \nreceived approval and funds for the books & labels\nworked with previous Emerging Tech Specialist colleague to find appropriate tools\nURL shortener\nQR code generator\nAn aside note – our budget was cut by 38% this year so guess what we’re losing, people and our collection.\nAn indicator that usage of electronic resources are even more important than ever!\nI’ll quickly show you the criteria my Emerging Tech Specialist developed, please ask me after or check out my ppt in slideshare for more details…\n","2":"…QR Codes\nI’ve noticed that many of you have SmartPhones. Show of hands...\nWho’s scanned...thank you. ... \nIf you haven't, go ahead and do that now! ...Thank you.\nFor those of you without a smart phone or tablet, the code leads to my ppt in Slideshare. Fun! Now you all know it’s available for you to read or review at your leisure.\nI’d be happy to go over how to scan the QR code after this session for anyone who’s interested.\nBefore I go into how I used QR Codes, let’s deal with the elephant in the room right off the bat…\n","8":"URL SHORTENERS\nChose snipurl\nWhy? \nShorter urls create less dense & more easily scanned codes\nChose: snipurl as you can change the destination URL\nREMEMBER: what if the destination URL changes? \nThat’s ok, I can still use the same snipurl, just edit it, and therefore, I can use the same qr code too\n","3":"http://wtfqrcodes.com/ \n(Once laughter has died down…read out for those who may not be able to see it well)\nOur latest emerging tech specialist sent this to me last May. Why OMG NO?\nNot everyone has a device or app\nNot so intuitive process to scan \nLinks go to things that aren’t useful\nPeople aren’t bothering to scan them anymore\nIf I learned about this tech from you, my colleagues whether librarians or technicians, why the backlash? Why the raining down on my play and experimentation, on my opportunity?\nI’ve wasted time, money, effort\nmade a mistake\nmissed the train on this tech\nwould have nothing to say in my 10 min here as I’d already applied & been accepted\nSuddenly I was the one saying “OMG NO!!”\nWhat did I do? I researched the heck out of it – I googled it, also went over materials I’ve collected in past few years\nI believe this tool CAN work for us if we use it smartly & effectively\nNot a terrible decision to use them in the library setting\nWe are skilled! \nKnow how to use the devices required \nTeach/instruct all the time\nQR codes = free, easy to create and manage\nThrough this process I developed a personal credo about emerging technology: EXPERIMENT, PLAY, MAKE MISTAKES, USE TECHNOLOGY NOW B/C IT’S GOING TO CHANGE TOMORROW\nFortunately, I’m supported by supervisors & mgrs to take the risk, keep the project going.\nLet’s go over the issues & turn them on their heads, into how-to’s\n1. device: a smartphone or tablet with internet access…\n","9":"QR CODE GENERATORS\nChose: Delivr\nNot the most user-friendly so I recommend playing around a bit yourselves to find the right fit\nI’m not going into much detail about the criteria as you all have access to this ppt in slideshare and here’s the link in case you missed it at the beginning…\n","4":"http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/replace-devices-with-smartphone/ \nSmartphones & tablets are fun!!\nLook at all the things you can do with them!\nI remember the 80’s, we call this retro these days…ghetto blaster with iPhone dock instead of cassette!\n2. scanning\nI teach people how to access info every day, I can teach people how to use their fun devices, and I want to!\nWe vet info all the time, capable of helping users select appropriate app \nApp generally = multipurpose code scanner – ISBNs, grocery items to see ingredients etc\n3. link as directly as possible to specific resources = useful!!\nAgain, we vet info all the time, we are highly skilled in finding the most appropriate link\nThen users can bookmark URLs EG: textbook available in a database reducing keystrokes to access that info\nOther tips:\nUse software to keep track of stats \nEspecially useful for databases – may not have easy access to data via publishers\nUse them in multiple areas: I joined our Marketing Committee and included codes on posters, screen savers etc\nTake advantage of your clients’ use of technology\nPC judges given iPads\nInterested in using them in your library? Align with your strategic plan\nFor example, several of the books in our collection are also available in our subscription databases.\nOne of our strategic plan items is to increase access & usage of electronic resources & I used that in my proposal for a ‘False book’ project…\n","10":"Link to slideshare\nREMEMBER: EXPERIMENT, MAKE MISTAKES, PLAY, USE TECHNOLOGY NOW B/C IT’S GOING TO CHANGE TOMORROW \n"}
