Code reviews are a powerful tool in ensuring and maintaining quality in your application, but they can be very difficult to get right. When they're misunderstood or poorly executed, they can even make a bad situation worse.
In this session I'll use my professional experience to give you some tactics for getting great benefit from code reviews. We'll talk about tools, about process and most importantly about attitude! Whether you're a developer or a technical lead, come along and find out how to perform a genuinely useful code review and provide constructive feedback in the quickest time possible.
DarkPAN is a local-use CPAN that contains internal modules not found on CPAN, and that exposes them to the Perl toolchain for use in microservices. In this presentation we discuss one way to implement an internal DarkPAN.

DrupalCamp Ghent 2014 - Developing Drupal 7 with Drupal 8 in mindJoeri van Dooren
Code samples used in the presentation: https://github.com/Ozmodiar/Drupal-DIC-Presentation
These are the slides of the presenation I gave at DrupalCamp Ghent 2014 about developing Drupal 7 with Drupal 8 in mind. A session about how we managed to do Drupal development with object-oriented custom modules and Composer and Symfony Container integration. All to provide an easier migration to Drupal 8 later on.
Using software modules today is the default way of working for most systems and frameworks. With the advent of many software languages and OSS frameworks, new module systems are constantly created and new module ecosystems start to prevail. This trend is horizontal and covers operating system packages, language libraries and application modules (plugins). But while some module systems are nicer to use, others are repeating past mistakes and are a daily source for developer agony and pain. In this short talk I will present the \"lessons learned\" at JFrog, where we make software for managing software libraries and deal with many types of module systems. This talk will show what works and what doesn\'t work in a module system; what features can make a module ecosystem thrive or fail; and why, despite all downsides, modules are here to stay and conquer more space as the Cloud continues to grow.
Dissolving Technical Debt on Agile Projects - Smidig 2012Jakub Holy
Experiences with dealing with legacy code while delivering value. Key points: 1) Legacy code costs a lot. 2) Design must be maintained & evolved. 3) Continous refactoring during each task is a way to achieve 2.
It’s not easy to perform a good code review. Often done in a hurry just to get it done, it only makes things worse. People treat it as an obstacle, not a helpful thing. I am gonna tell you why code reviews are important and how they can help you maintain good quality code. I will not only tell who are the code reviews for, how to raise a useful code review, but also how to perform a good code review in the quickest time possible.

Introducing Scala to your Ruby/Java Shop : My experiences at IGNManish Pandit
With the move to SOA, IGN's API engineering became a traditional Java/Ruby shop. We introduced Scala to the team in August '11. As of April '12 we have our major services running on Scala, and we could not be happier. I'll talk about the strategic & tactical rationale, gradual introduction to the new language, cultivating experts and mentoring junior developers. We will also cover the common roadblocks the leaders may run into, addressing the concerns of engineers and stakeholders, and building an engineering culture that facilitates innovation and talent growth. Please note that this talk is not a Ruby/Java/Scala religious debate - we believe in using the best tool for the job; and what works for us may not work for every org (which is where the culture comes in). My team's journey from "Holy crap! This looks academic and scary!" to "Let me whip out a service by EOD today" in a matter of months is something I am very proud of, and would love to share it with fellow developer community.

Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:

Securing your Kubernetes cluster_ a step-by-step guide to success !KatiaHIMEUR1
Today, after several years of existence, an extremely active community and an ultra-dynamic ecosystem, Kubernetes has established itself as the de facto standard in container orchestration. Thanks to a wide range of managed services, it has never been so easy to set up a ready-to-use Kubernetes cluster.
However, this ease of use means that the subject of security in Kubernetes is often left for later, or even neglected. This exposes companies to significant risks.
In this talk, I'll show you step-by-step how to secure your Kubernetes cluster for greater peace of mind and reliability.

Climate Impact of Software Testing at Nordic Testing DaysKari Kakkonen
My slides at Nordic Testing Days 6.6.2024
Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.
Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
