This document summarizes a study that empirically analyzed considerations of legacy from 13 sport events held in Australia and Canada between 1988-2007. The study found that legacy was conceptualized and managed differently between the two countries, due in part to differing policy contexts. While event reporting showed increased reference to legacy over time, terminology was inconsistent and accountability for legacy outcomes was limited. The study concluded that clearer conceptualization and identification of stakeholders is needed for effective legacy planning, implementation and evaluation.

This document discusses the Historic Urban Landscape (HUL) approach developed by UNESCO. It outlines how HUL aims to integrate heritage conservation into urban development by considering values, vulnerabilities, stakeholders and informalities. The summary discusses how HUL is evidence-based and cyclical, and can be applied to all cities through tools like civic engagement, planning and regulatory systems. It also notes challenges around stakeholder participation and finding information on HUL results and case studies.
This document summarizes research on trends in driving licence uptake in the UK and examines potential inequalities. It finds that while licence holding has increased over time and converged between men and women born in the 1950s-1960s, it has declined slightly for those born after the 1970s, especially for men. Licence holding is lower in urban versus rural areas but shows similar age effects between genders. Social class strongly influences trends, with the largest declines seen in lower social classes. The researchers conclude that while increased gender parity may reflect choice, period effects among younger cohorts and differences by social class and location point to economic constraints as a bigger factor in declining mobility.

Leveraging Parasports Events for Sustainable Community ParticipationGayle McPherson
I gave this presentation at the Sport and Disability Conference #disport2014 in Coventry this week. Our research (including @davidgmcgillivray, @davidfhlegg, @lmisene) aimed to examine how the hosting of different forms of sport events for persons with a disability are being leveraged to create opportunities for community participation, and influence community attitudes towards disability. I presented some of the findings from our research at Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games in this presentation before we go onto Canada to conduct the same research at the Pan/Para Pan Am Games 2015.

Leveraging parasport events for sustainable community participationDavid McGillivray
The document examines how parasport events can be leveraged to increase community participation and influence attitudes towards disability. It analyzes social legacy tactics from Glasgow 2014 and the ParaPan Am Games 2015, including interviews with stakeholders. Preliminary findings show Glasgow 2014 emphasized inclusive policies and infrastructure improvements, but legacy expectations were limited after the event. Broader strategic planning is needed beyond the organizing committees to achieve sustainable social legacies. Leadership is important but handover of efforts to local groups is critical for long-term impact.
The document discusses the sustainability of major sporting events. It notes that while such events are often touted as providing economic and social benefits, the evidence supporting these claims is mixed or weak. Specifically, anticipated economic outcomes are often not realized and longer-term legacies are difficult to measure. Environmental impacts are also growing issues but remain under-researched. Overall, the sustainability of hosting major sporting events is a complex topic involving political, social, economic and environmental trade-offs that require further study.

the Millennium Project, Artificial Intelligence, Global Governance for the Tr...Jerome Glenn
The document discusses the need for global governance to manage the transition from artificial narrow intelligence (ANI) to artificial general intelligence (AGI). It notes that some experts believe AGI could emerge within 10 years, but it would likely take 10 years to negotiate an international treaty and develop an effective governance system. The document proposes conducting a study using a Real-Time Delphi method to assess governance models and issues, develop alternative scenarios, and make recommendations to stimulate global discussion on governance for ANI to AGI transition. Key issues discussed include developing standards around AI safety, transparency, and aligning AI with human values and goals.

Managing events can be analyzed from this geographic lens by looking at the spatial aspects of the event and how people engage with the environment. Key geographic concepts like location, interaction, and sustainability are important to consider when planning and studying events.
Strategic thinking Model for SEA (Aplikasi di Indonesia)praswaskita2
The document outlines a strategic thinking model for strategic environmental assessment (SEA). The model has three key components: 1) critical decision factors that are the focus of the assessment, 2) pathways for sustainability that assess risks and opportunities of strategic options, and 3) continuous dialogues between stakeholders throughout the decision-making process. The SEA process involves integrating environmental and social issues, assessing impacts, and validating the assessment. The methodology focuses assessment efforts on integration to make evaluation easier and validation a formality. It emphasizes identifying priorities, mapping critical decision factors, assessing strategic options, providing recommendations, and ensuring ongoing engagement.

6. Staged after the mid 1980’s (term legacy began to be used by event
organisers);
Formal bid process required
Evidence of government involvement (Bid and/or Event staging
process);
The event had to demonstrate the notion of an ‘Urban Project’ through:
• Economic impact for the State economy; and/or
• Opportunities for refocusing the city (capital investments, duration of 5 days);
and/or
• Place marketing (media coverage, 1000 participants).

8. Most reports referred to ‘legacy’
Over time, documents increased reference to legacy
However, terminology varies, making comparisons
difficult:
• legacy outcomes;
• legacy assets;
• legacy contributions;
• legacy obligations; and
• legacy aspects.
9. Both ideas of planned and bestowed were evident
Australia
• Ideas of bestowal
• Legislation in place to avoid negative legacies
Canada
• Planning for legacy more evident
• Specific organisations to coordinate legacy from sport events
• Ideas of maximising legacy
Major contextual difference
• Montreal Olympics negative legacy
• Canadian Sport Event Hosting Policy
10. Legacies exist in time
• Long-term, permanent, enduring, transferable
A need to set boundaries for strategic management
Looking back and looking forward
Legacies evolve from Games time - reflect community
interests and needs
11. Legacy largely positive
• celebratory reporting and limited critical reflection
Canada connection between success and legacy
Legacy only negative when previous events are
discussed for legacy comparison
• “Several previous Olympic Games have left host cities and
underwriters with an unwelcome legacy in the form of large
public debt. NSW Government legislators sought to avoid
this outcome” (Sydney Olympics 2000)
12. Legacies are available to everyone, everywhere
The literature argues there is a critical need to develop:
• Defined boundaries for legacy promises and planning
• Consideration of stakeholders
• Strategies to balance objectives and maximise outcomes
Instead, post-event reports are celebratory and vague
with limited demonstration of strategies for legacy
planning
13. Findings illustrate a lack of transparency and
accountability for legacy conceptualisation and
practical management applications
Over 2 decades of event reporting shows a limited
increase in sophistication of legacy planning,
implementation and evaluation
• Celebratory claims
• Limited accountability to stakeholders
• Limited ability to compare events
14. Management Implications – what is needed?
• Clear conceptualisations of legacy – starting at the event bid stage
• Clarification of terminology
• Clear identification of stakeholders
• Critical outline of stakeholder and legacy management process and
evaluation
Future Research
• More international sport event contexts
• Influences of varying policy contexts
• Towards best practice in legacy planning and reporting

Editor's Notes
Note that preliminary findings were presented in 2009 at SMAANZ, decision was then made to bring in another context and compare, then Canadian context was chosen... Something like that...
