Installation Basics
Below is the basic principle of how the Netthings energy monitor should be installed.
No cables are
needed between the
controller and the
display, they
communicate with
their own Wi-Fi
Tools required
 Drill
 Pliers
 Sprit level
 Pencil
 Drywall Pad saw
 Screwdrivers (slotted and pozidrive)
 Bootlace ferrules crimping tool
 Multifunction test meter
This product communicates with Wi-Fi frequencies, the signal from the Energy Manager should reach the display within
modern houses but solid walls and obstructions can affect this. To ensure best performance of the system please check
signal strength before selecting final installation position to optimise the system performance. Additional equipment may
be needed to connect to other manufacturer’s products. Please contact NetThings if in doubt.
Installation Tips
1. Run all power and pulse cables during first fix.
2. Mount the Netthings controller on a double electrical box as it
aids with cable connections
3. Mount the display on a recessed double electrical box as there is
a power supply to be fitted inside this for the display.
4. Mark your cables as it will aid in fault finding and commissioning.
5. Recommended, any heat meters fitted should have a pulse value
of less than 1 pulse per Kwh of energy consumed.
1. Do not use phone or cat 5 cables as pulse cables as they don’t
transmit the pulses sufficiently
2. Do not position the display out of Wi-Fi range from the controller.
3. Do not install the product unless you fully understand its setup and
operation, if in doubt ASK.

before connecting
to channel 5 & 6.
Ensure cables are
labelled and note

for set up later.
The supply should be from a
13Amp un-switched spur which
is fused at 3 Amps.

To connect the display to the controller use either of these 2 methods
Swipe down on display screen to refresh the Wi-Fi signals seen
P
Powering Up & Setup Procedures
Power up the controller and wait for the lights to come on and for it to broadcast its own Wi-Fi signal.
Power up the display and wait till you see the SSID for you controller shown on the display.
Select the SSID and then enter the password associated with that device
Example shown is SSID NT_0004A36D09AA with password of 64be567969f
Use WPS connection by pressing the ‘#’ button for three seconds on the
controller and press ’WPS Search’ on the display
Once connected you will see these screens
To set up the system
press the ‘NETTHINGS’
logo on the ‘All
Channels Off’ screen.
The set up menu, as
shown here, will then be
displayed.
To start your setup
enter into the
‘CHANNEL SETUP’
first.

Fill in the details as previously noted during the final connection stage of installation
for the NAME, TYPE & PULSE VALUE for each of the connected channels.
Repeat for all channels that are being used to monitor energy usage.
Don’t forget to turn ‘ON’ the connected channels and save your settings.
Once all channels have been verified as fully operational then the Configuration /
Verification banner should be switched off. To do this, enter into the OVERVIEW
section of the setup menu.
When you are happy that the setup is correct and
fully operational press here.
If monitoring 3 phase
supplies turn on this facility
on channel 1 page
If this cannot be
verified then use the
HELP section in this
manual to identify
your problem.
At this stage your set up is complete and the energy
manager will operate and record the energy data from the
connected energy sources, verify system operation by
consuming energy and checking that the channels are
recording correctly on the home display.
This page gives you an overview of all your settings
and also has an ‘Activate Configuration’ at
the bottom of the screen.
This is a typical screen for the channel setup

Exit back out of the setup menu and do a final check
that all used channels are showing for the end user.

Verification of pulses
Any of the following will prevent NetThings
Energy Manager recording use of energy on
the pulse connections.
 Faulty secondary equipment not
supplying any pulses
 Reversed polarity on the
interconnecting cables from meters to
Energy Manager
 Breaks in the interconnecting cables
from meters to Energy Manager
 Incorrect or no cable verification
and/or labelling
 Installing cables exceeding the
distance specified in IEC-62053-31
(100meters)
 Installing incorrect pulse cables (not
Beldon 9501)
 Incorrectly connecting pulse inputs to
CT connections and vice versa
Incorrect or no activity
shown on the Home Display
Please check the following items if you cannot
verify any energy usage
 Ensure your home display is
connected to your Energy Manager
Controller – Un-pair the display and
reconnect to the correct SSID
 If the Home Display or Energy
Managers stops working – please
restart the system and home display
 Incorrectly connecting pulse inputs to
CT connections and vice versa
Any other problems
 Energy Manager doesn’t power up –
check that the core is properly seated
on the base
 How do I change tariff settings – this is
normally left to the homeowner as the
default tariff settings will allow the
device to operate sufficiently
 The time is incorrect – you will need to
log into the Wi-Fi signal coming from
your Energy Manager via a PC or
phone and enter the web address of
172.16.0.254/set-time on the devices
web browser. Follow the onscreen
instructions
To turn off the Configuration / Verification banner
press the on/off button and then save the setting.
