Use of indigenous language for conflict resolutionM S Siddiqui
The theme of International Mother Language Day 2019 is "Indigenous languages matter for development, peace building and reconciliation". It has been taken with an aim to establish a link between language, development, peace, and reconciliation. It aims to improve quality of life, wider international cooperation and visibility and strengthened intercultural dialogue to reaffirm the continuity of indigenous languages and cultures.
Social harmony is peaceful interaction of human dynamics among members of a social group or groups. Basic survival and subsistence families or complex societies develop and thrive on some form of social harmony.

The oringal slidecast can be seen at http://youtu.be/SMmdiPGrCgQ
This presentation was made on 7 June, 2013 at the Caribbean Studies Association conference in Grenada. Guyana and the rest of the English-Speaking Caribbean have a history
of violence and subjugation of human subjects. Independence provided opportunities for equality of all citizens. However, the ending of the 20th century saw increased activism on two human rights issues.
These issues are :-
i) the beating of children as a form of discipline
ii) discrimination against lesbian, gay , bisexual and transgendered (LGBT) citizens
The resistance to change in these issues has been 'it is our culture'.
The response to the international human rights obligations which call for change has been framed in ideas of nationhood and sovereignty; preservation of cultural values and resistance to cultural imperialism. This presentation examines the work which has been done to change the attitudes to these issues. This review will be done through examination of the strategies which are being used by
organisations and individuals who advocate on these rights.
The presentation is a work in progress towards identifying how the changes have been happening and identifying the opportunities for deeper activism to promote equality for children and equality for LGBT in the Caribbean.

Abstract
A group of Nigerian children were stayed at a refugee camp in Nigeria as they had been lost their families and homes and exposed to brutal violence during the war. Now they have been relocated with some foster families in the United States after being rescued from refugee camp with pathetic conditions. The children could have psychological effects for that brutal violence which require an intervention to help them to forget what happened in past and break a cycle of violence that can occur from being exposed to violence. Trust building by foster family, counseling, and community activities can help with the intervention program. The children will be positively impacted by foster family, school, and community and will become more resilient if they will be given a more normal life without violence. The debate between “cultural universality” and “cultural specificity” has a great role in this situation as the children have left their motherland of Nigeria for the United States. It is important to implement Nigerian cultural traditions within the intervention program to help the child to sense their homely feelings. Some ethical considerations should take into consideration during the intervention of the foster families and the professionals dealing with the intervention.
The psychological effects of violence that the children from Nigeria might be experiencing
Children from Nigeria were exposed to horror and terror situations and brutal violence during war. They lost their houses, families and some of them injured in the attacks. When they came to refugee camp, also exposed to further hardship and violence in refugee conditions. These pathetic situations and violence must have psychological effects on those children when they come to be relocated with foster families. War-affected children may experience post traumatic stress disorder. Severe disruptions and losses in their lives may lead to high rates of depression, fear, grief, apprehension, aggression and revenge (Williams, 2006). Most effects of violence could be on physical, mental health and intellectual development of child.
There is no matter about the children’s age and gender, each will be negatively affected by the violent exposures that they experienced around them (Williams, 2006). The reactions to the violence of girls and boys may differ in the way but ages of both are old enough to really think of what happened and the situations that they had been living in past life prior to be displaced to the United States. It is also important to take into consideration about the psychological effects of these children as they are now in a different culture and society of new foster family (Williams, 2006). They may or may not adjust properly to live in their foster families’ homes. They may have problems in feeling secure and happy with foster family where they are now living. They may have.

1. Why Study Inequality?
Feedback from past students doing this course indicates that they learned a great deal about the impact of ‘development’ on people’s lives and that they gained deeper insights into some current global issues. Not surprisingly, however, they also found that studying inequality can also be somewhat depressing. Why, then, do we persist in teaching this topic? Taylor (1992:20) has conveniently provided me with two very good reasons:
1 He argues that ‘...global inequalities are going to become the most important political issue in the world in the wake of the demise of the Cold War’.
2 Taylor goes on to say that ‘...understanding global inequalities is a key stage in the process of overcoming them’.
Taylor’s first point has proved prescient. From the revelations of the Global Financial Crisis and the Occupy movement to the release of documentaries such as Inequality forAll(Kornbluth,2013), and the publication of top-selling books on inequality includingWilkinson and Pickett’s (2010) The Spirit Leveland Piketty’s (2014) Capital in theTwenty-first Century, discussionsof inequality have become highly prominent in globalpolitics. New Zealand has not been exempt from this, with the publication of the book Inequality: A New Zealand Crisis(Rashbrooke,2013) and a steady stream of comm ...

26. In times gone by, our parents did not protect us. If adults saw children going to dangerous places, like into the jungle, they would only laugh. Their attitude was one of “I don’t care”. Parents did not look out for their children, and certainly not for children who where not their biological children. Things are different now, because parents are showing that they care about us”.
27. “ Adults now pass on their knowledge to us. They not only teach us how to play the Boo-Boo flute and how to drum, but also how to get a group together and then lead it. Children and young people are now very much involved in planning and carrying out community activities”
28. “ The war has made our people violent. Children and young people stopped going to school and started playing in the jungle instead, fighting each other with sticks and bottles. No-one had any control over them. Adults were not aware of the negative effects of the situation. Parents also set a bad example by fighting each other on almost a daily basis while their children were present.”
29. “ If we act respectfully, the people in our community know that we are being properly brought up. Our parents can then be proud of us, and we are asked to take part in community activities. This generates peace and unity, not only in the family, but in the community as well. We have a saying: ‘If children wash their hands, they can eat at the village chief’s table’.”
30. “ Now that there is more peace in the communities and adults are no longer each others enemies, they are able to pay more attention to children, whether these are their own biological children or not. Neighbors help children when they are ill by taking them to the hospital, even if the parents are not around. And our parents no longer hit us now that the message has been spread about maltreating children and children’s rights”.
31. “ There is now more cohesion in our community because we have come together and have started organizing cultural festivals. Nowadays, residents of nearby villages are friendly towards us. In contrast to how things used to be, when such cultural dance activities were characterized by violence, they now end peacefully.”
