After the 9/11 terrorist attacks in 2001, the U.S. launched a war on terror that transitioned into a war against Saddam Hussein in Iraq, though the objectives of the war became unclear to many Americans over time. Barack Obama was elected in 2008 as the first African American U.S. president.
